Youths charged for aggravated robbery and ram raid offences – Darwin

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

Two youths have been charged following a series of offences across Darwin early this morning.

Yesterday afternoon, a 14-year-old male allegedly fled the courts and removed his electronic monitoring device prior to his court appearance. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest and police were notified.

Around 1:35am, the 14-year-old male and a female youth allegedly approached a man at a service station along Bagot Road, Coconut Grove. The male youth allegedly grabbed the victim from behind and demanded his vehicle keys before a struggle ensued. During the altercation the victim was dragged towards Bagot Road and narrowly avoided being struck by a passing vehicle.

The victim was then able to pull himself free before running a short distance from the location, with the alleged offenders following and threatening him with a knife and demanding his keys. The victim handed the offenders the keys and they fled the scene in his Toyota Camry.

A short time later, the stolen Toyota Camry was allegedly used to ram through fire escape doors at a business in Eaton, where the offenders entered the premises and stole a quantity of alcohol.

It is alleged the offenders then travelled to the Darwin Waterfront precinct where they used the vehicle to ram the doors of a convenience store and subsequently stole cigarettes and fled the scene in the scene.

Around 3:45am, officers from Strike Force Trident and the Dog Operations Unit sighted the Toyota Camry travelling through Coconut Grove and attempted to apprehend it; however, the vehicle failed to stop. A pursuit was initiated through Millner and back into Coconut Grove, where the vehicle was abandoned on Litchfield Court.

A short foot pursuit was initiated, and both youths were apprehended without further incident. Officers recovered the stolen alcohol, cigarettes and the weapon allegedly used during the robbery.

The 14-year-old male has been charged with:

  • Breach of bail
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Drive/use motor vehicle without consent
  • Drive unlicensed
  • Recklessly endangering life
  • Damage to property x 2
  • Ram-raid x 2
  • Burglary (building) x 2
  • Theft x 2
  • Fail to obey police direction
  • Drive in a dangerous manner during pursuit
  • Drive with low range blood alcohol content

The 17-year-old female has been charged with:

  • Breach of bail
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Drive/use motor vehicle without consent
  • Receiving stolen property x 2

Tourist rescued after becoming lost near Lake Wilks

Saturday, 24 May 2025 – 3:24 pm.

A female tourist in her 30s was rescued last night after becoming lost on the Lake Wilks Track in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
The woman lost the track, whilst walking alone, relying solely on her iPhone with online maps for navigation, and wasn’t adequately prepared for an emergency situation.
The alarm was raised at 6.50pm, and search and rescue efforts were coordinated by Tasmania Police, with assistance from Tasmania SES members. The woman was located and safely extracted without injury about 1.45am this morning.
Detective Inspector Steve Jones said the incident was another reminder of the importance of proper planning and preparation when bushwalking in Tasmania’s wilderness.
“While we’re pleased this situation ended safely, it could have easily resulted in serious consequences.
“Tasmania’s wilderness can be unforgiving, and weather conditions can change rapidly, meaning being properly prepared is essential,” he said.
“Technology like smartphones can be useful, but they should never be your only means of navigation.
“We are urging all walkers, especially visitors unfamiliar with the terrain, to research their chosen route thoroughly and always be prepared for any emergency, including delays.
“In this instance, lack of mobile phone charge and no torch contributed to the need for rescue,” said Detective Inspector Jones.
Bushwalkers should follow these essential safety tips:

Be prepared: Ensure you have appropriate equipment, including a map, torch, suitable clothing and footwear for all conditions, a waterproof jacket, adequate food, water, and a first aid kit and carry it with you at all times.
Research your trip: Check the intended trip’s difficulty level and whether it aligns with your fitness and skill level. Always have a route plan, map, and check the expected weather forecast.
Inform others: Let someone know about your planned route and expected return time before embarking on your journey.
Carry communication devices: Always carry a fully charged mobile phone and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). Consider a portable charger to extend your phone’s battery life.
Be mindful of mobile phones: While mobile phones can be helpful, they should not be relied upon as the sole means of communication and navigation during a bushwalking trip.

Police assault – Wadeye

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

Police are calling for information following a large disturbance in Wadeye yesterday afternoon, which resulted in damage to property and an assault on police.

Around 4:15pm, police received reports of a disturbance occurring outside a childcare centre in the community. As officers left the police station to respond, they were allegedly approached by a group of approximately 30 people armed with bows and arrows, rebars and window louvres.

It is alleged two unknown males threw rebars at the police vehicle, one piercing the windscreen and another lodging in the bonnet. Officers disengaged and returned to the police station, where the group allegedly began throwing projectiles at the building and rioting outside.

No officers were physically injured during the incident.

Additional resources were deployed, with six members of the Territory Response Group attending to assist. The crowd later dispersed.

This morning, police are engaging with Elders, local family groups and clinic staff to support community safety and prevent further escalation.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444. Please quote reference number P25140179. Anonymous reports can be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://crimestoppersnt.com.au/.

Drug-affected drivers detected during traffic operation on Midlands Highway

Drug-affected drivers detected during traffic operation on Midlands Highway

Saturday, 24 May 2025 – 8:15 am.

Tasmania Police are reminding motorists about the dangers of drug driving after several concerning detections during a traffic operation on the Midlands Highway yesterday afternoon (23 May).
Officers from Road Policing Services conducted the operation south of Campbell Town, supported by the Dog Handler Unit.
During the operation, the police drug detection dog gave positive indications to several vehicles leading to the discovery of a quantity of methamphetamine.
The occupants were arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled substance.
Other results from the operation included:

3 x positive results for illicit drugs,
1 x driving whilst disqualified.

Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby said it is disappointing the number of drug-affected drivers on a major road such as the Midlands Highway, where speed limits reach up to 110 km/h.
“Alcohol and drugs remain one of the Fatal Five contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes on Tasmanian roads,” he said.
“Operations like this are critical to removing dangerous drivers from our roads, and it is especially concerning that people are choosing to drive under the influence on high-speed highways, putting themselves and other road users at serious risk.”
“We will continue to conduct high-visibility traffic operations across the state to deter unsafe driving and keep the community safe.”

Appoint your SMSF trustees

Source: New places to play in Gungahlin

Eligibility of trustees and directors

All members of your self-managed super fund (SMSF) must be individual trustees or directors of the corporate trustee. When selecting fund trustees, you need to make sure they’re eligible.

Who can be a trustee

Members are eligible to be a trustee if they’re:

It is an offence to knowingly act as a trustee while being a disqualified person. A legal personal representative (LPR) cannot act as trustee on behalf of a disqualified person either.

You may have to appoint an LPR to be the trustee or director where a member:

  • is over the age of 18 with a legal disability
  • is under the age of 18
  • requires a person to hold enduring power of attorney to act on their behalf (see SMSF Ruling SMSFR 2010/2)
  • is deceased, until the death benefit becomes payable.

Members under the age of 18 can also have their parent appointed as a trustee or director on their behalf.

If prospective trustees have any outstanding tax or superannuation affairs, such as any unlodged tax returns or unpaid tax debts, this could prevent their SMSF registration from proceeding.

Determine if you’re a disqualified person

You are a disqualified person if you answer ‘yes’ to any of the following questions:

Applying to waive disqualified status

You can apply for a waiver of disqualified status if the offence leading to the disqualification was not an offence involving serious dishonest conduct. This means that the penalty imposed for the offence was not either a:

  • term of imprisonment for more than 2 years
  • fine of more than 120 penalty units.

The application must be in writing and include:

  • details of the offence
  • court documents about the offence
  • consent for us to inquire about the offence to any law enforcement agencies or courts that we think are relevant.

The application should be made within 14 days of the conviction. We may accept applications after this time if you explain the circumstances of your late application.

You cannot become a trustee until we notify you of our acceptance to waive the disqualified status.

Send your signed application and supporting documents to:

AUSTRALIAN TAXATION OFFICE
PO BOX 3100
PENRITH  NSW  2740

Check the company can act as a corporate trustee

A company cannot act as a corporate trustee of an SMSF if:

  • the company is aware or has reason to suspect that a director of the company is a disqualified person
  • an administrator has been appointed in respect of the company
  • a receiver has been appointed in respect of property beneficially owned by the company
  • a provisional liquidator or restructuring practitioner has been appointed in respect of the company
  • action has started to wind up the company
  • the company has been deregistered by ASIC.

Trustee and director consent

Whether you’re an individual trustee or director of a corporate trustee, you are responsible for running the fund and making decisions that affect the retirement interests of each fund member.

Before you consent to being a trustee ensure you understand your obligations as an SMSF trustee under the law. You need to have the knowledge, time and skills to manage your fund successfully. We recommend you complete a free online trustee training course.

All trustees or directors must formally consent in writing to being appointed. This can be recorded in meeting minutes and must be kept on file for the life of the SMSF and for 10 years after the SMSF winds up.

Trustee declaration

The Trustee declaration must be signed:

  • by trustees and directors of a corporate trustee or a legal personal representative of an SMSF, to declare they understand their obligations and responsibilities
  • within 21 days of appointment.

You must keep your completed declaration while you remain a trustee of the fund, or for 10 years (whichever is longer). You don’t need to send it to us unless we ask for it.
