Rooming house operator charged with unlicensed trading

Consumer Affairs Victoria is taking a Newtown man to court for allegedly operating 2 rooming houses without a licence. 

46-year-old Yang Yu, also known as Steven Yu, allegedly accepted rent and bond money from residents in Belmont and Waurn Ponds, indicating he was a licensed rooming house operator. 

It is also alleged the bond money was not lodged with the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority. 

Geelong City Council referred the matter to Consumer Affairs Victoria.  

Local councils are responsible for registering rooming houses and ensuring compliance with planning, building and health and safety standards.  

Consumer Affairs Victoria enforces renting and rooming house rules, including licence obligations and minimum standards. 

The matter will be heard at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 4 June 2026. 

Arrests – Strike Force Trident – Greater Darwin Region

Strike Force Trident has made several arrests and conducted numerous investigations in the last 3 days across the Greater Darwin region, with help from General Duties, the Dog Operations Unit, NTPF Mounted Unit and the Serious Crime Squad. These responses resulted in Youth Diversion for 3 youths and the arrest of 10 youths and 5 adults including:-

Three youths, aged 13, 14 and 16 were arrested in Casuarina and Coconut Grove in relation to burglary, stolen motor vehicle and breach bail offences that occurred in the Darwin CBD and Malak.

Four youths aged 12, 14, 14 and 15 were arrested in Winnellie following an aggravated robbery in Casuarina where a victim was allegedly threatened with a weapon before his car was stolen.

Three youths aged 12, 13 and 13 were arrested for breach bail in Palmerston CBD by Trident and the Mounted unit as part of Operation Ventura.

A 28-year-old male and 48-year-old male were arrested for a robbery in Karama overnight. Serious Crime Detectives have continued this investigation with charges expected later today.

A 31-year-old male was arrested in the Darwin CBD for breach of bail, a 40-year-old male was arrested in Woodroffe for breach DVO and traffic offences and a 33-year-old female was arrested for breach bail in Coconut Grove.

Trident Detectives also investigated an arson report at a Palmerston School which has resulted in three 14-year-old youths being referred to Youth Diversion for damaging property.  

Six unlawful entries were recorded in the Greater Darwin Region over the weekend which are all being investigated.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Humphries said Strike Force Trident would continue to proactively target recidivist offenders, with more arrests expected this week.

“Strike Force Trident works incredibly hard in conjunction with all other NT Police units, to ensure quick responses to property and violent crimes, with the aim of resolving these incidents as quickly as possible”.

“We urge members of the Greater Darwin community to stay vigilant and lock their homes and vehicles as offenders are opportunistic and will take advantage of anything that is left unsecured.”

Rider charged over Norwood fatal crash

Monday, 1 June 2026 – 3:22 pm.

An 18-year-old Kings Meadows man has been charged with manslaughter following an extensive investigation into a fatal crash at Norwood on Saturday 13 September, 2025.
The crash, which occurred at the roundabout at Boiton Hill Road, Norwood Avenue and Opossum Road, resulted in the death of a 17-year-old man from Blackstone Heights, who was a pillion on the motorcycle.
Yesterday (31 May), police arrested and charged the 18-year-old rider of the motorcycle.
He will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on 5 August, 2026.

Moderate rainfall is forecast across the Mersey River catchment for the remainder of Monday through to Wednesday. With the forecast rain, river level rises are expected across the Mersey River catchment.

Minor flooding may develop along the Mersey River at Kimberley from Tuesday afternoon and at Latrobe Bridge from overnight Tuesday.

Mersey River – Liena to Kimberley:

Minor flooding may develop along the Mersey River – Liena to Kimberley.

The Mersey River at Kimberley is currently at 0.98 m and steady, below the minor flood level. The Mersey River at Kimberley may exceed the minor flood level (2.40 m) from Tuesday afternoon.

Mersey River – Kimberley to Latrobe township:

Minor flooding may develop along the Mersey River – Kimberley to Latrobe township.

The Mersey River at Latrobe Bridge is currently at 0.66 m AHD and falling, below the minor flood level. The Mersey River at Latrobe Bridge may exceed the minor flood level (3.10 m AHD) from overnight Tuesday.

Arrests – Drug offences – Galiwinku

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested an 37-year-old following reports a male was in the Galiwinku community selling Kava.

Around 1pm on Friday, May 29, Galiwinku members conducted searches of two addresses. A 37-year-old male was located at one of the addresses in possession of a trafficable quantity of Kava and was arrested.

The Kava seized weighed a total of 11.9kg with a street value of $11,900. He was refused bail and conveyed to Darwin on Saturday. 

He has been charged with possess trafficable amount of Kava and remanded to appear in court today.

Arrests – Aggravated Robbery – Karama

Casuarina General Duties and Strike Force Trident have arrested two males in relation to an aggravated robbery in Karama overnight.

Around 12:25am the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that a 61-year-old male had been allegedly assaulted.

It is alleged that a group of offenders, travelling in a black camry, followed the victim home from a service station in Malak.

As the victim exited his car, two offenders with their faces covered approached and threatened him with edged weapons.

The 61-year-old returned to his vehicle where he was allegedly assaulted with one of the weapons, his vehicle was damaged and several items were stolen. The victim suffered an injury to his hand which did not require medical treatment. 

Casuarina GDs and SF Trident members responded and at 4:05am located and seized the offenders’ vehicle.

A 28-year-old male and 48-year-old male were arrested and charges are expected later today.

UPDATE: Search and Rescue Operation Stood Down – East Arnhem Land

The Northern Territory Police Force (NTPF) has suspended a nine day multi-agency land search for a missing 31-year-old in remote East Arnhem following extensive operations.

On Friday 22 May 2026, police received a report from his family that he had not returned to Yirrkala as planned and had not been seen since 6am that morning.

His vehicle has since been located around 86km south of Nhulunbuy along the Central Arnhem Highway.

There is currently no evidence of suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement.

Search operations were conducted over nine days in remote and challenging terrain south of Nhulunbuy using helicopters, ground search teams, ATVs, vehicles and thermal drones.

NTPF Search and Rescue members, local police, NT Emergency Service, NT Fire and Rescue Service, Dhimurru Rangers, Yirralka Rangers, NORFORCE and Nautilus Helicopters were all mobilised.

Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Hall said, “Our teams covered approximately 1,311km² of terrain, the majority by helicopter, with key areas searched multiple times.

“We began demobilisation of the search yesterday, with extensive investigative enquiries surrounding the missing person undertaken, with no confirmed sightings or evidence of his location identified.

“Family liaison was maintained throughout the operation, with the next of kin regularly briefed on search progress and SAR decision-making processes.

“Police would also like to acknowledge and thank Parks Australia, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Rio Tinto, community volunteers, chartered aviation companies, Miwatj Aboriginal Corporation and Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation for their assistance during the search.

“Investigations into the  disappearance remain ongoing and police will assess any new information received and will consider recommencing search operations should credible information come to light.”
