Man to face court charged with multiple driving offences in allegedly stolen vehicles

A 19-year-old Oxley man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning charged with driving offences and burglary after allegedly stealing two vehicles.

About 6.35am on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, the 19-year-old was captured on a CCTV camera at a residence in Fisher attempting to enter the property through a glass sliding door.

The man used a watering can to smash the locked door and once inside, allegedly stole the owner’s bag containing keys to their blue Porsche Macan – which he subsequently stole.

The Porsche was recovered a short time later in Lyons, however no occupants were inside.

Yesterday (Thursday, 7 November 2024), a woman attended a warehouse in Fyshwick to collect a parcel. While inside, her white Audi S3 was stolen from the carpark.

About 3.35pm yesterday, police observed the Audi driving well in excess of the speed limit in Richardson.

A short time later, police activated their emergency lights and directed the Audi to stop, however the car – allegedly being driven by the 19-year-old – swerved around them and continued towards Tharwa Drive.

Police later located the Audi at a residence in Oxley where the 19-year-old man, who had bail conditions not to drive a car, was subsequently arrested.

He was charged with burglary, taking a motor vehicle without consent, two counts of driving a motor vehicle without consent, being an unlicenced driver, and dangerous driving.

Man charged after shotgun and drugs found in his possession

A 33-year-old man has been charged after police found a loaded shotgun and drugs in his possession.

About 2.20am this morning (Thursday, 7 November 2024), police received a report of an unconscious male lying on the road on Florey Drive, Macgregor.

Police attended and after determining the man was not injured from a collision, woke him up.

Officers located a motorcycle nearby and confirmed it had been reported stolen. The man was searched officers found a loaded, sawn-off shotgun, a machete, two vials of a liquid suspected to be GHB and a small quantity of a white crystalline substance, believed to be methylamphetamine.

Police believed the man to be under the influence of illicit drugs and he was transported to hospital for treatment.

Following his release from hospital, he was charged with offences including possessing a prohibited firearm, trafficking in a controlled drug other than cannabis, unlawful possession of stolen property, and possessing a knife without a reasonable excuse.

Hindu community incidents

Deputy Chief Police Officer Doug Boudry recently met with Hindu community representatives to provide an update on arrests made following two incidents at Hindu temples in the ACT.

About 2pm on Saturday, 26 October 2024 a group of four men broke into the Mawson Hindu Temple and stole three donations boxes.

About 2.30pm, the same group broke into the Hindu Temple Cultural Centre in Florey and stole a safe and five donation boxes.

The group used a black Hyundai with Victorian number plates to attend both locations.

About 9.15pm that night, NSW Police in Yass informed ACT Policing that four men matching the descriptions of the burglary offenders had been arrested and stolen property associated with these burglaries was located in their vehicle. The men were charged by NSW Police for driving offences and possession of property stolen outside NSW. One will appear in Goulburn Court on 13 November 2024 and the other three will appear in Yass Court on 14 November 2024.

While no charges have been laid by ACT Policing at this time, investigations are continuing in conjunction with NSW and Victoria Police. Yesterday (Tuesday, 5 November 2024) a safe and other items stolen from the Florey Cultural Centre were located in Uriarra. The items were subjected to Forensic examination.

ACT Policing is pleased that money stolen from the two burglaries was recovered and has been returned to the Temple and Cultural Centre.

Earlier this week, Deputy Chief Police Officer Doug Boudry met with representatives of the ACT’s Hindu community to discuss strategies regarding security measures at their venues and to provide contact points for Gungahlin, Belconnen and Woden Police Stations where the ACT’s three Hindu Temples are situated.

Both the DCPO and community representatives committed to continue working together to boost community safety and develop community engagement opportunities for police with the Hindu community.

ACT Policing takes incidents such as this at places of worship very seriously. Temples, churches, synagogues and other gathering places are very important to many members of our community, and so we ask that those who live or work nearby to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity to police on 131 444.

Man charged with trafficking drugs linked to fatal overdose

A 40-year-old man will face court after allegedly supplying drugs to a 23-year-old woman who later died from a suspected drug overdose.

About midnight on 6 June 2024, a friend took the 23-year-old to hospital after she began suffering adverse effects from a heroin injection.

The woman was treated by hospital staff but was declared deceased a short time later.

Police began an investigation into the supplier of the drugs.

About 6.40pm yesterday evening (Wednesday, 6 November 2024), police stopped the 40-year-old man near his home in Reid and searched him, locating more than 30g of suspected heroin and methamphetamine hidden in his underwear.

A search warrant was executed on his residence and police seized a spring-loaded extendable baton and other drug paraphernalia.

The man was arrested and charged with three counts of trafficking in a controlled drug other than cannabis and possessing a prohibited weapon.

He is due to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 7 November 2024).

Witnesses sought to alleged animal cruelty incident

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an alleged animal cruelty incident that occurred last week at Arawang Paddock.

About 9.30pm last Thursday (31 October 2024) a group of males wearing Halloween costumes were observed hitting a horse with a baseball bat at the Arawang Paddock, on the corner of Namatjira Drive and Kambah Pool Road.

Later that evening, the owner of the horse attended the paddock and located their horse with a sticky substance on it. The horse was not seriously injured.

A second owner spoke to police whose horse was also subject to abuse by the group.

Man charged for assaulting partner and evading police

A 29-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after allegedly assaulting his partner and evading police after the incident.

About 2.30pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, 5 November 2024), police received a report of a man hitting a woman in the face while in public in Greenway, before leaving the scene in a Toyota Corolla.

A short time later, police observed the same car from the report travelling along Cynthea Teague Crescent and directed the driver to stop.

The 29-year-old man failed to stop for police, swerving around officers and driving in an erratic manner.

The vehicle was later located in Isabella Plains and police found the man hiding in the roof cavity of a nearby home.

Police seized the vehicle, and the man was arrested and charged with aggravated common assault and failing to stop a motor vehicle for police.

Police seek information following Charnwood stabbing

ACT Policing is seeking information following a stabbing that occurred in Charnwood last month.

About 5.10pm on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, a man was approached by a group of approximately 10 people – believed to be teenagers – as he approached the underpass at Cartwright Street, Charnwood.

Following a short argument between the group and the man, a 16-year-old boy allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the man in his hand and shoulder.

The group fled the area prior to police arrival, while the victim was assisted by members of the public. He was conveyed to hospital a short time later with serious injuries.

Last week (Tuesday, 29 October 2024), police executed a search warrant at the 16-year-old boy’s residence where he was subsequently arrested. He was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Police have already spoken to a number of witnesses, however would still like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the incident who has not yet spoken to police. This includes anyone with information regarding the identity of others in the group involved.

The group are believed to have arrived in the vicinity of the Charnwood Shops as early as 4pm that day.

Man charged with historic child sex offences

A 61-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning following an investigation into his alleged sexual abuse of a girl in 2011.

In 2023 a report was made to ACT Policing relating to historical sexual assault allegations allegedly committed by the man against a 13-year-old girl.

Police will allege the man committed acts of indecency and groomed the girl at his home.

The 61-year-old man was arrested at his residence about 2.00pm yesterday (Tuesday, 19 November 2024).

He is expected to face court this morning (Wednesday, 20 November 2024) charged with three counts of committing an act of indecency on a young person, and grooming a young person.

There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences in the ACT. It doesn’t matter how much time may have passed and it is never too late to report.

Man on parole charged with burglary

A 46-year-old Wanniassa man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning after allegedly committing a burglary at a residence in Franklin on Monday.

About 2.40pm (Monday, 18 November 2024) the man allegedly entered a property in Franklin – after forcibly tampering with the front door handle – and took items belonging to the residents. The incident was captured on CCTV footage.

The residents reported the incident to police later that day.

Shortly after, a further two people reported to police that they had arrived home to find their front door handles had been tampered with, and their properties had been ransacked.

After reviewing the CCTV footage from the Franklin incident, police located the 46-year-old man yesterday and arrested him.

He has been charged with burglary and breaching his parole obligations.

Police are also appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the suburbs of Franklin and Harrison on Monday, including anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage from around the area, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. High range drink driver charged with several driving offences

A 25-year-old Wright man has been charged following an incident on Sunday morning where he failed to stop for police after being detected speeding on Hindmarsh Drive.

About 4.05am (Sunday, 17 November 2024), police were conducting speed enforcement activity when they detected a white Mitsubishi Triton travelling in excess of the speed limit.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle, however the driver of the Mitsubishi accelerated away onto Jerrabomberra Avenue, mounted a concrete median, crossed onto the wrong side of the road, before entering a nearby carpark and stalling the vehicle.

At this time, the 25-year-old driver exited the vehicle and took off on foot, despite police directing him to stop.

Following a short foot pursuit, the man was apprehended by police in nearby bushland.

Police subjected the driver to a roadside breath test, which was positive for alcohol. He was transported to Woden Police Station, where he returned a breath analysis of 0.271 – more than five times the legal limit.

The 25-year-old was served an immediate suspension notice, suspending his right to drive in the ACT for 90 days.

The man has also been charged with driving a motor vehicle with alcohol in breath, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, exceeding the speed limit, and resisting police. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court next month.
