Athletes from around the world excel at Virtus World Athletics Championships

Source:

Inclusion, diversity and athletic prowess were on display at the 2025 Virtus World Athletics Championships held in Brisbane.

The Albanese Government invested $460,000 to support the delivery of the Championships, hosted by Sport Inclusion Australia in partnership with Queensland Athletics.

There was a full track and field program, including youth events for athletes with an intellectual impairment, providing an opportunity to experience international competition and build a passion for physical activity and sport.

Eleven world records fell in the event’s opening two days highlighting the level of athlete and competition.

Held from 8-15 October, it was the first time in 20 years the event was in Australia, bringing hundreds of elite athletes together from more than 30 different nations.

The event was the third Virtus athletics competition held in Brisbane, following the 2019 Virtus Global Games and 2022 Virtus Oceania Asia Games.

The Albanese Government is committed to hosting inclusive sporting events in the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, supporting greater participation and inclusion in line with the national sport strategy, Sport Horizon.

Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Sport, Anika Wells:

“We are committed to building safe, inclusive and competitive sporting environments for all Australians and I’m proud the Albanese Government supported this year’s Virtus World Athletics Championships in Brisbane.

“These Championships were about more than just competition – they are a celebration of inclusion and diversity, highlighting the Albanese Government’s commitment to wide participation in sport as part of the national sport strategy.

“The 2025 Virtus World Athletics Championships are yet another exciting international event in the lead up to Brisbane 2032.”

Albanese Government invests in Victorian urban precincts

The Albanese Government is investing over $7 million to support the planning and development of innovative urban precincts across Melbourne.

The City of Melbourne will receive over $4.4 million for the Birrarung Riverfront Activation Precinct proposal (the Greenline Project).

This funding builds upon the $20 million commitment from the Albanese Government to the Greenline Project and will go towards investigating how to reinvigorate this section of riverfront that has been underused and disconnected from the surrounding city for decades.

This precinct area will connect Federation square, the Flinders Street Station precinct, Banana Alley, Sandridge Bridge and more with the Yarra River, Birrarung.

The City of Hume will receive $2.6 million for their Pioneering Urban Innovation: Planning a New City in Melbourne’s North project.

The precinct proposal will be one of Australia’s most ambitious urban planning projects, pioneering a regional partnership between the Hume, Mitchell and Whittlesea councils, Stockland, and Wurundjeri (Registered Aboriginal Party) to create a regional hub of employment, transport, housing and community activity on Cloverton Boulevard.

It will feature a transport hub and mixed-use precinct, exemplifying sustainable, inclusive, and innovative urban design.

Funding is being provided through the latest round of the Government’s $150 million urban Precincts and Partnerships Program (uPPP).

For more information on these programs visit: infrastructure.gov.au/urban.

Quotes attributable to Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“Our cities and suburbs are growing. These projects demonstrate show how governments, businesses and communities can work together to create innovative spaces to meet the growing demands of a community and appeal to tourists and locals alike.

“I look forward to these two projects coming to fruition and making Melbourne an even greater place to live.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Melbourne Sarah Witty:

“The Birrarung Riverfront Activation Precinct will transform underused spaces by the Yarra river into valuable public assets that will attract more visitors.”

“Bringing together key partners and the community to contribute to the development will lead to some really vibrant public spaces, and give us more ways to enjoy our riverbank.”

Quotes attributable to Member for McEwan Rob Mitchell:

“This new precinct in the north of Melbourne will feature a thriving transport hub and mixed-use precinct, exemplifying sustainable inclusive and innovative urban design.

“We are bringing together key partners and the community to contribute to the development of an investment ready regional hub for employment, transport, housing, community activity and cultural significance.”
