Yaninee vehicle fire

The CFS has responded to a vehicle fire near Yaninee, 15km north of Wudinna in Eastern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia.

CFS volunteers on 5 trucks, supported by SA Police, are on scene working to put out the fire which extended into surrounding grass. Crews have prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent properties. Firefighters will remain on scene into this afternoon and tonight to continue working to extinguish the fire and ensure the scene remains safe.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the highway has been closed due to this incident and it is unknown when it will be reopened.

Smoke is impacting the Eyre Highway and visibility may be reduced. To ensure your safety and that of firefighters and other emergency personnel who are working in the area, please do not enter the area unless necessary..

Arrests – Crime Series – Tennant Creek

Northern Territory Police have arrested two youths in relation to a series of aggravated burglaries and ram-raids carried out in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police allege that around 12:45am yesterday, a group of youths forced entry to a business on Maloney Street, stealing multiple sets of car keys before leaving in three stolen vehicles.

In the hours that followed, the offenders allegedly engaged in a series of dangerous and destructive incidents, including:

  • Front gate of a police facility damaged after being rammed with a stolen vehicle.
  • Gate of a hotel drive-through area damaged after being rammed.
  • Front of an office building damaged after being struck with a stolen vehicle.
  • Rear of a police vehicle rammed while mobile.
  • Front entrance of a hotel ram-raided and alcohol stolen.
  • Security gates at another business damaged after being rammed.
  • Stolen vehicle driven at a member of the public, narrowly missing a head-on collision before the victim’s vehicle was struck from behind.

Later yesterday morning a 16-year-old male was arrested after a foot chase by general duties officers.

A second male, also aged 16, was arrested by Tennant Creek and Southern Investigations members at 10:20am this morning.

Both are expected to be charged with a range of offences, including Aggravated Burglary and multiple counts of ram-raid.

Two of the 3 stolen vehicles have been recovered.

Police continue to investigate and are working to locate additional co-offenders who are expected to face similar charges.

Warooka Grass Fire

The CFS is responding to crop and scrub fire near Warooka in the Southern Yorke Peninsula of South Australia.

CFS crews on approximate 20 trucks, supported by a number of Farm Fire Units and 8 aircraft, including firebombers and observational aircraft, have stopped this fire from spreading but continue firefighting efforts to put out the thick vegetation the fire is burning within. Crews are expected to remain on scene this afternoon and into tonight to ensure the scene is safe.

Smoke can be seen from surrounding areas.

Roads are currently open around this incident however this may change at short notice. If driving in the area, especially through smoke, please drive to conditions. Continue to monitor road closures at: traffic.sa.gov.au

Arrest – Possess Prohibited Weapon – Darwin

Northern Territory Police have arrested a man following an incident involving an imitation firearm in Darwin’s northern suburbs overnight.

Around 10:54pm on last night, police received a report that a 59-year-old man had been threatened with what appeared to be a firearm in Wulagi.

It is alleged the victim approached a 19-year-old male who was causing a disturbance from a vehicle parked outside his property. The 19-year-old male then produced a apparent firearm, pointed it at the victim and threatened to kill him.

Multiple police units responded immediately, with investigations leading to a quick vehicle apprehension and seizure of an AR-15 style gel blaster. The 19-year-old male was arrested at the scene and underwent both breath and drug analysis.

The 19-year-old male remains in police custody and is expected to be charged with related offences including possess prohibited weapon (imitation firearm), drive medium range blood alcohol concentration and make a threat to kill a person.

Duty Superintendent Vicki Koum commended the quick response from Casuarina police officers.

“Their timely actions meant the situation was safely resolved and a 19-year-old male being placed in custody very quickly.”

Call for information – Suspicious Death – Borroloola

Northern Territory Police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman at Borroloola this morning.

Around 10:30am, police and local clinic staff responded to reports of an unresponsive female at a residence in a town camp.

Upon arrival, first responders located a 27-year-old woman who was unresponsive and subsequently declared deceased at the scene at 10:50am.

A crime scene has been established.

The woman’s 27-year-old partner has since been taken into police custody.

Detectives from the Northern Territory Police Crime Division are deploying to Borroloola to assist local police.

Call for Information – Aggravated Assault – Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police are calling for information following an aggravated assault in the Alice Springs CBD early this morning.

Around 5:35am, Alice Springs police officers arriving for day shift witnessed a serious disturbance unfolding on Parsons Street, directly in front of the Alice Springs Police Station.

Earlier a 31-year-old man was attacked by a group of males, which included one with a machete and one with a wheel spanner, near a local fast-food restaurant.

When the victim attempted to flee towards the Police Station, 3 offenders chased him.

On the roadway outside the station, the man was taken to the ground and violently assaulted, with CCTV footage showing he was punched, kicked and stomped on more than 40 times.

Members on scene intervened immediately, with officers arresting a 21-year-old male.

The remaining offenders fled the area in a vehicle.

The victim sustained non-life-threatening head injuries and was transported to Alice Springs Hospital.

Alice Springs Criminal Investigation Branch detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dash-cam or CCTV footage from the area between 5:15am and 6:00am, to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number NTP2500120693.

Arrest – Aggravated Assault – Yulara

Northern Territory Police have arrested a man following a serious aggravated assault at a Yulara hotel early this morning.

Around 4:38am, police received a report from onsite security staff at the hotel that a woman had suffered a significant hand injury after being attacked with a knife.

Police attended and established that a 53-year-old man had allegedly entered a hotel room occupied by a 57-year-old woman and a 24-year-old woman, all of whom are known to each other.

The victims asked the man to leave, at which point he is alleged to have become aggressive and armed himself with a knife.

He then allegedly stabbed the 24-year-old woman in the right forearm, causing a deep laceration.

The older victim attempted to intervene and grabbed the blade, receiving serious injuries to her left hand and fingers.

The offender was arrested at the scene.

Both victims were taken to the local health clinic, with the 57-year-old woman flown to Alice Springs for surgery.

A crime scene has been declared, and investigations are ongoing.

Northern Territory Police are calling for information after a police vehicle and a number of local businesses were rammed at Tennant Creek overnight.

About 12:13am this morning, police received a report that the gates of a business on Maloney Street had been rammed, with 3 vehicles stolen from the premises:

• a silver Toyota Hilux,
• a white Volkswagen Amarok and,
• a blue Proton Jumbuck.

A short time later, the vehicles were seen driving dangerously throughout the town.

An attempt to intercept the Hilux was unsuccessful and a brief pursuit was terminated before Police deployed tyre deflation devices, however the offending vehicle managed to evade the device.

The Amarok was later recovered. The Jumbuck remains outstanding.

The Hilux was then used to be used in a series of serious offences.

At 2:39am, the Hilux rammed the front gate of the Tennant Creek Police Station, before returning 10 minutes later and striking the gate a second time, knocking it to the ground.

At 3:07am, the vehicle rammed the rear of a police vehicle returning to the station, fortunately no-one was injured.

At 3:14am, the stolen Hilux was used in a ram-raid at the Tennant Creek Hotel, where a quantity of alcohol was stolen. The vehicle fled the scene and remains outstanding.

At some time during the night, the Hilux also rammed a shopping complex and a civilian vehicle that was driving on Patterson Street.
