Fair Fuel Plan introduces daily price caps

Source: Australian Capital Territory Policing

Victoria’s fuel price reforms are now in effect, introducing updated legal requirements for fuel retailers to improve fuel price transparency and predictability for motorists.

What’s changed for fuel retailers

From 10 March 2026, fuel retailers must:

  • set and report tomorrow’s maximum fuel price (cap) for each fuel type
  • ensure fuel prices only decrease from the set cap during the day (prices cannot increase)
  • update price information as soon as practicable, and within 30 minutes of any change
  • report when a fuel type becomes temporarily unavailable.

Prices reported by retailers feed directly into Servo Saver – the official fuel price comparison tool in the Service Victoria app. This allows drivers to make informed decisions about where and when to refuel.

Compliance and support

Consumer Affairs Victoria is providing guidance and support to help fuel retailers understand and meet their reporting obligations.

From 10 March new penalties and fines apply for breaches. We will monitor the marketplace to ensure ongoing compliance and take enforcement action where needed.

Proposed Decommissioning of the Bulk Electronic Clearing System: RBA Risk Assessment Update

Source: Airservices Australia

The Reserve Bank of Australia today released an update on the progress made by the payments industry over the past year against the recommendations outlined in the Risk Assessment into the proposed decommissioning of the Bulk Electronic Clearing System (BECS).

The RBA welcomes industry’s efforts over the past year to implement the recommendations from the Risk Assessment, particularly in relation to increased industry coordination and direct engagement with end users. In December 2025, AusPayNet announced that it was removing the target end-date of June 2030 for BECS until a clear roadmap has been developed for the future of account-to-account (A2A) payments in Australia. As a result, the nearer-term risks associated with a disorderly transition away from BECS have largely subsided.

Nonetheless, the RBA’s Risk Assessment Update highlights that several areas of risk persist, and others have emerged to be more prominent. Key stakeholders across the A2A ecosystem have highlighted insufficient consensus within industry about the A2A payments modernisation agenda, particularly on how to best to process bulk payments in the future. This is impeding the effective decision-making and analysis needed to establish a path forward for A2A payments. As a result, industry risks losing the necessary momentum to modernise A2A payments. If industry participants are unable to make coordinated progress on modernising A2A payments, the RBA would take further action to achieve outcomes in the public interest.

Traralgon Fire Brigade returns to the track

Source: Victoria Country Fire Authority

In their 138th year, Traralgon Fire Brigade will compete at the CFA VFBV State Championships for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a seven-year hiatus, Traralgon will make a comeback with a newly formed running team set to represent the brigade in Stawell on March 28 and 29.

Traralgon has a long history of competitive involvement, fielding teams for decades before the team folded prior to COVID-19. Now, the brigade is back on the track, and the excitement is palpable.

Traralgon Fire Brigade Captain Adam Townsend said the revival had been a long time coming, and the response from members new and old had exceeded expectations.

“People were keen to get it back up and running,” Adam said.

“For the last three years we have had a marching team and people have loved that so this year we have gone that next step and put a running team together.

“It’s about getting the brigade and the area represented on the track and enjoying a different side of CFA.”

For Adam, leading the team has a personal significance after starting out as a junior in Melton, he now finds himself at the helm of the competitive team in Traralgon, a journey he describes as coming full circle.

Alongside him are members who have never competed before, as well as those returning after long absences, including one former junior member who stepped away six years ago and has come back specifically for the competitions.

“The revival has also given older brigade members a renewed sense of pride, and seeing the work they put into competitive firefighting sport being carried forward by the next generation,” Adam said.

The team has already made their mark, competing in Morwell where they took home first place in the pumper four event.

“We had a good result in Morwell, but we are more focused on just giving it a go,” Adam said.

“We are excited for the State Championships and see it as a chance to just get out there, have some fun, and learn more about the sport.

“We want to do anything we can do to help keep competitive firefighting alive.”

Traralgon will host the Eastern Zone Championships on Sunday 15 March, giving the community a front-row seat to the action for the first time in seven years.

The local competition will welcome competitors and visitors from brigades across the region and state more broadly. The following day, the brigade will host an open day, something they have not done in several years.

“We hope the public can come out and support us at both the local competion and our open day,” Adam said.

“There is more to CFA than just getting on the red truck and hopefully it will even intice some new people to sign up and join us at the brigade.”

The support of neighbouring brigades and the broader community has been central to the team’s revival, and Adam hopes the weekend will strengthen those networks and inspire others to keep competitive firefighting sport alive for generations to come.

Black rats eradicated from North West Island

Source: Government of Queensland

Issued: 9 Mar 2026

In a significant win for the conservation of threatened turtles and seabirds, North West Island has been declared rat-free following an intensive ground and aerial eradication program.

The invasive black rats were reported to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in November 2022 by diligent campground hosts.

Following the reports, rangers deployed remote cameras and Black Trakka ink monitoring stations which confirmed that black rats had spread throughout the island.

Black rats are a serious environmental risk on isolated islands as a single breeding pair can create a population in the thousands inside a year.

The pests are omnivorous, and will eat seabirds, their eggs and chicks, vegetation and turtle eggs and hatchlings.

Due to North West Island’s exceptional environmental values, the eradication project became a key priority for QPWS and the Gidarjil Land and Sea Rangers.

Senior Ranger Damon Shearer said the rats were most likely stowaways on boats or in camping equipment that visitors brought to the island.

“The November 2022 confirmation that black rats had spread around the island was disappointing, because mice were declared as eradicated from the island just three months earlier,” Ranger Shearer said.

“Due to the size of the island, dropping aerial baits by helicopter was the most effective form of treatment, but we used bait stations and trapping to reduce the impacts on seabirds and turtles.

“The eradication program took 18 months, and the team frequently altered our tactics and adapted to the rats’ changing behaviour.

“After the eradication program was finished, we used remote cameras and Black Trakka traps to monitor for rats.

“Twelve months of intensive monitoring has shown no evidence of black rats, and rangers and Gidarjil Land and Sea Rangers are proud of the hard work that went into protecting the island.

“As the school holidays approach, we’re asking visitors to North West Island to check all equipment for rats and mice before departure and to arrive at the island pest-free.”

This project was delivered by the Reef Authority and QPWS through the Reef Joint Field Management Program. It was funded through the Australian Government’s Reef Trust by Australia Pacific LNG, QGC and Santos GLNG.

Feral animals can be reported to the department by calling 13 74 68 (13 QGOV).

North West Island is a significant seabird and turtle rookery in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. It is situated in the Capricornia Cays National Park and lies 75 kilometres north-east of Gladstone.

Australia to provide defensive military assistance to Gulf

Source: Prime Minister of Australia

ran’s reprisal attacks continue to escalate, already at a scale and depth we have not seen before; 12 countries in the region are continuing to be targeted.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) alone has been forced to shoot down over 1,500 rockets and drones. This growing wave of dangerous and destabilising attacks from Iran puts civilian lives at risk, including Australian lives.

In responding to requests, Australia will deploy an E-7A Wedgetail to the Gulf to help protect and defend Australians and other civilians.

Australians will remember the E-7A Wedgetail was recently deployed to Europe as part of Australia’s assistance to Ukraine.

As it did there, the E-7A Wedgetail will provide long range reconnaissance capability which will help secure the airspace above the Gulf.

The E-7A Wedgetail and supporting Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel will be deployed for an initial four weeks in support of the collective self-defence of Gulf nations.

Additionally, in response to a request, the Albanese Government intends to provide Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) to the UAE.

The Albanese Government has been clear that we are not taking offensive action against Iran and we have been clear that we are not deploying Australian troops on the ground in Iran.

The first priority of the Albanese Government is, and always will be, to keep Australians safe.

There are around 115,000 Australians in the Middle East – around 24,000 in the UAE.

Helping Australians means also helping the UAE and other Gulf nations to defend themselves.

It is important to recognise the assistance and support the Gulf is providing to thousands of Australians at this time.

We continue to work on contingencies – to keep Australians safe and to help travellers leave the Middle East.

We have already sent DFAT personnel to the region as part of Crisis Response Teams. They are on the ground providing consular support.

More than 2,600 Australians have now returned home but significant challenges remain and further work is underway to support those still seeking to leave.

Australia supported action aimed at preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and preventing Iran from continuing to threaten international peace and security.

Our position remains that we do not want to see the conflict continue to escalate.

We call on all parties to uphold international humanitarian law and to protect civilian life.

We are taking defensive action to support our partners’ efforts to keep Australians safe.

As always, deployed ADF assets will operate according to Australian law, Australian policy, and Australian directives.

The Government will notify the United Nations Security Council of relevant actions taken under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
