While Canberra cooled down over winter the ACT Government delivered a major program of upgrades at Dickson and Manuka Pools to improve accessibility, sustainability and visitor comfort ahead of the new swimming season.

Both pools will reopen to the public on Saturday 25 October.

Dickson Pool is reopening after $925,000 in improvements which feature:

  • a new high efficiency filtration system improving water clarity and reducing chemical use while supporting the pool’s accessible design
  • aeration and reseeding of grounds with a blend of durable grasses to reduce maintenance needs and improve resilience to foot traffic and improved drainage to lower water use and energy consumption
  • café upgrades including a new ventilation system and a new sandwich preparation bench introduced this season to offer healthier options.

The heritage listed, Manuka Pool, is reopening after $30,000 in improvements which feature:

  • the installation of anti-slip flooring in all bathrooms to improve safety
  • new baby changing tables in both male and female bathrooms to make the pool more family friendly
  • improved kiosk ventilation creating a cooler and more efficient space for staff
  • a new coffee machine and deep fryer improving food and drink service for visitors
  • the return of the beloved Champions Board after nearly seventy years, restoring a lost piece of Canberra’s swimming history.

To find more information and to get passes head to Manuka Pool or Dickson Pool websites.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry:

“Canberrans will notice the difference the moment they walk in. Cleaner water, greener lawns and better facilities are ready from day one of the season.

“We have future-proofed Dickson pool with water saving systems, energy efficient technology and drought hardy landscaping so they stand up to hotter weather and bigger crowds.

“Manuka Pool is part of Canberra’s story. Locating and bringing back the Champions Board after nearly 70 years returns a lost piece of our city’s sporting history to the community.

“Families will love the upgrades. There’s easier access, cooler lawns to relax on, and yes, even crispier hot chips and more food options available at the recently upgraded cafés.”

From 2-10pm, the free family-friendly event will showcase a dynamic mix of live music, dance, food, art and workshops, all celebrating the rich diversity of Latin American culture.

This year’s program has been expanded to include a second stage and more performers, alongside the open-air art gallery featuring traditional and contemporary works curated in collaboration with Latin American embassies.

The entertainment line-up features a broad spectrum of Latin sounds and styles, from traditional roots to contemporary fusion – perfect for dancing, listening, and celebrating. The program includes El Gran Mono, Australia’s first Colombian picó sound system, accompanying dance performances from Melbourne’s Selva Y Tambó Columbian Dance Crew and local salsa legends Mi Tierra.

Accompanying the performances will be a smorgasbord of mouth-watering Latin American food including tacos, tamales, and empanadas.

Event details:

  • When: 2-10pm, Saturday 25 October 2025
  • Where: Latin American Plaza, 38 Childers Street (between Marcus Clarke Street and the ANU)
  • Cost: Free, with food and beverage trading
  • More information: InTheCity.com.au/La-Fiesta

La Fiesta is one of many exciting events happening in the City Centre made possible by City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy.

Paid by commercial property owners in the City Centre and Braddon, the levy recently supplied 20 businesses impacted by light rail construction with grants to run their own activations. Next month, Canberra’s giant Christmas tree will return to Petrie Plaza to celebrate the festive season, and Braddon will again host the popular fringe event during Summernats, both of which are also supported by the levy.

Quotes attributable to Dianela Pi, Ambassador of Uruguay to Australia

“La Fiesta is a powerful platform for sharing Latin American culture with the Canberra community. It brings our music, dance, food and art right into the heart of the city, inviting everyone to experience the joy and diversity of our traditions.”

“We’re proud to collaborate with the ACT Government to create an event that not only celebrates Latin America but also builds connections between people and cultures.”

Quotes attributable to Michael Pettersson, Minister for Multicultural Affairs

“We’re proud to work with the Latin American community and embassies to deliver a celebration that’s welcoming, immersive and joyful.”

Visit to Vietnam

Source: Australia Government Statements 2

Today I will travel to Vietnam to meet leaders including General Secretary To Lam and State President Luong Cuong and to lead a national delegation to sign the UN Convention against Cybercrime on behalf of Australia.

Vietnam and Australia are Comprehensive Strategic Partners and close friends. Our relationship is built on mutual strategic trust and understanding.

In Hanoi, I will discuss with President Cuong and Ministerial counterparts our shared priorities under the Australia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including enhancing cooperation under our Memorandum of Understanding on Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology Cooperation.

Australia congratulates Vietnam for the first UN Convention to be signed in Vietnam, reflecting Vietnam’s strong international engagement and commitment to multilateralism, which Australia is pleased to support.

The UN Convention against Cybercrime is the first UN-endorsed instrument addressing cybercrime and is a significant step forward for the international community to work together.

Australia’s signature to the Convention is a demonstration of our commitment to combating all forms of cybercrime.

I look forward to joining other global leaders to discuss how we can work together to respond to the full spectrum of cybercrime and to promote a human rights-based approach to the implementation of the Convention.

Australia played an instrumental role in the negotiation of the Convention, advocating for new offences to address the significant harms caused by technology facilitated abuse such as the non-consensual sharing of intimate images and protecting children from online grooming and solicitation.

I will be joined during the visit by Jessica Hunter, Australia’s Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology.

Fire Danger Period to begin in the West Region

Source: Victoria Country Fire Authority

The Fire Danger period will commence at 1am on Monday 3 November 2025 for the following municipalities.

  • Hindmarsh Shire
  • Yarriambiak Shire Council

Residents in these areas are encouraged to use this time to prepare their properties ahead of the Fire Danger Period (FDP). This includes cleaning up dry grass, leaves, and other flammable materials, as well as completing safe private burn-offs while they are still permitted.

CFA Assistant Chief Fire Officer for District 17, Terence Fradd, said with temperatures starting to increase it was important to be prepared for the fire season.

“Things outside might look green but we have very dry material underneath,” he said.

“There is above average fire potential and we are urging those in Hindmarsh to ensure they have their properties prepared and have a bushfire plan in place.”

For more information on preparing your property and understanding local fire restrictions, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

Those conducting burn-offs must notify authorities online at the Fire Permits Victoria website (www.firepermits.vic.gov.au), or by calling 1800 668 511.

By registering your burn-off online, you allow emergency call takers to allocate more of their time taking calls from people who need emergency assistance immediately.

No burning off is permitted during the FDP without a Permit to Burn, which can be applied for through the Fire Permits Victoria website.

Fire Danger Period information:

A written permit is required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation during the FDP. You can apply for a permit at firepermits.vic.gov.au.

Lighting fires in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of more than $21,800 and/or 12 months imprisonment. For a full list of conditions, visit cfa.vic.gov.au/can

To find out what you can and can’t do during FDP, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au/can or by calling VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.

Supporting Victorian families through the Maternal and Child Health Line

Source: Australian Capital Territory Policing

The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Line provides Victorian families and carers of children from birth to school age with trusted information, advice and support.

Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including public holidays, the service is fully funded by the Victorian Government and is the only service of its kind in Australia.

Each year, the MCH Line answers more than 100,000 calls from parents and carers seeking advice about their child’s health, growth and development, breastfeeding, sleep, behaviour and their own wellbeing.

When parents and carers call the MCH Line, they’re connected to a qualified Maternal and Child Health nurse who can provide expert, confidential advice and reassurance – at any time of the day or night.

The MCH Line has a proud history, beginning as a volunteer-run service in 1974. Back then, MCH nurses ran the telephone line voluntarily, taking it in turns to take calls from their homes between 6pm and midnight. On Mother’s Day 1991, The MCH Line became a Victorian Government funded service, before expanding to a 24/7 service in 2000.

In 2025, the MCH Line is part of a suite of Victorian Government funded Maternal and Child Health External Link and early parenting services helping Victorian families and children to thrive. This includes the 10 MCH Key Stages and Ages External Link visits available to every Victorian child as part of the Universal MCH program, the Enhanced MCH program External Link for families experiencing additional challenges, and Victoria’s 10 Early Parenting Centres External Link , offering free support through specialised programs.

Children’s Week 2025

To mark Children’s Week 2025, the Department of Health has released a short video showcasing the dedicated team behind the MCH Line and the impact of their work.

  • Duration: 2:36

For more information about the Maternal and Child Health Line, visit the Better Health Channel page External Link or contact the MCH Line at any time on 13 22 29.
