Two years on – police continue to seek answers about the death of Jyle Molloy Murphy

Source: ACT Police

ACT Policing Major Collision Team investigators are continuing to investigate the death of 28-year-old Queanbeyan man Jyle Molloy Murphy on Pialligo Avenue two years ago.

About 11.00pm on Sunday, 27 February 2022, Jyle was struck and killed by a vehicle on Pialligo Avenue heading towards Queanbeyan.

Police have confirmed Jyle was picked up by a dark coloured sedan while he was on Morshead Drive sometime before 11.00pm that evening, and have previously released dash-cam footage from another vehicle showing this.

Soon after, Jyle exited this vehicle and was walking along Pialligo Avenue when he was struck and killed.

A review of CCTV footage also identified a white Toyota 4WD in the area.

Senior Constable Will Stevenson from ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team said police believe there are people in the community with light to shed on Jyle’s death.

“Today, on the second anniversary of his death, I would like to repeat our previous calls to anyone with information on Jyle’s death to come forward,” Senior Constable Stevenson said.

“Jyle was a much loved and loving member of our community, and it is important that we discover what happened to him that night two years ago.

“Think about how you would feel if you lost your own child or loved one and not have answers. Then also knowing that there are people in the community that can help, but are unwilling to. It doesn’t leave them with great faith in humanity and makes a tragic situation worse.

“Any information, no matter how big or small, could be the piece that we need to ultimately discover what happened to Jyle.”

Police are once again calling on any of the occupants of either of the dark or white vehicles to come forward rather than wait for police to knock on the door – it is likely the occupants of the dark coloured sedan were the last people to see Jyle alive.

Anyone who saw Jyle on the evening of 27 February two years ago anywhere between Russell and Pialligo, or was travelling eastbound on Pialligo Avenue, towards Queanbeyan, should contact police.

Additionally, police are also asking Canberrans to consider anyone who was visiting Canberra that night that may have been driving on this road. The Red Hot Summer Tour concert had finished earlier in the evening and interstate visitors may have been leaving Canberra via Pialligo Avenue at this time.

FAMILY STATEMENT

“The 27 of February 2024 marks two years since our beloved Jyle was tragically taken away from us.

“We love Jyle beyond measure and miss him endlessly. As a family, we struggle through each day, heavily grieving the loss of Jyle. Our hearts will forever ache for our son, brother, uncle, partner, and missing piece of our family.

“Due to this heinous act, our family will never be the same. We know someone out there knows something – please do the right thing and speak up.

“Please help our broken family bring Jyle the justice he deserves.”

ENDS

Anyone with information who could assist the investigation into Jyle’s death is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via theCrime Stoppers ACT website.
