Man extradited from QLD to face family violence charges

Source: ACT Police

A 48-year-old Lyneham man has been extradited from Queensland to face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 13 June 2024) in relation to family violence charges.

Police allege that, despite a family violence order being in place prohibiting the man from contacting his ex-partner, the man sent approximately 201 emails to the woman across a 12-month period – often sending numerous emails a day.

In April 2023, the man allegedly sent his ex-partner 86 emails over 22 days, and in December 2023, the man allegedly sent another 50 emails over 23 days.

On Wednesday, 6 March 2024, police arrested the man for contravening a family violence order, and he appeared in court where he received bail with a number of conditions.

The man failed to appear at his next court hearing on 5 April, 2024, and an arrest warrant was subsequently issued.

He was arrested by Queensland Police in Mackay, Queensland on Tuesday, 11 June 2024, and was extradited to the ACT last night (Wednesday, 12 June 2024).

This is another arrest under ACT Policing’s Operation Pemberton, which is targeting family violence offenders.

The man is facing existing charges of contravening a family violence order, and aggravated stalking.

Police take all reports of family violence seriously, and continue to investigate all forms of offending to ensure victims and the community are kept safe and offenders are held accountable.

We understand the significant coercion and control exerted in relationships where family violence exists, and encourage anyone impacted by any type of family violence offending to contact police and seek support.

If you are a victim of family violence or believe someone you know is the victim of family violence, you can contact police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency, or attend any police station.

Gungahlin Police Station re-opens

Source: ACT Police

Gungahlin Police Station has re-opened following remediation works and planned construction at the Gungahlin Joint Emergency Services Centre.

Members of the public can speak to officers at the front office to report crimes, attend for bail requirements or access Justice of the Peace services.

Gungahlin Police Station closed in February 2024 due to the discovery of low level contaminants during planned refurbishment works. Gungahlin officers were relocated to the old Traffic Operations Centre in Belconnen during the closure.

While Emergency Services Agency staff returned to the Joint Emergency Services Centre last week the police portion of the building underwent further commissioning works including the installation of new workstations and other infrastructure.

Importantly, planned construction works at the JESC for 2024 were able to be brought forward, allowing these works to be completed ahead of time.

ACT Policing thanks the community for their patience and understanding during this period and welcomes Gungahlin residents to attend their local police station for police assistance.

Speeding driver caught in wet conditions

Source: ACT Police

A 36-year-old Harrison man has been caught travelling 35km/h over the posted speed limit in poor weather conditions yesterday.

About 4.30pm yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, 11 June 2024) officers from ACT Road Policing were conducting speed enforcement activities on Horse Park Drive, Throsby when they detected a Honda Jazz sedan travelling at 115km/h in an 80km/h zone – on the very wet road.

A traffic stop was conducted and a 36-year-old full licence holder was identified as the driver.

The man was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice (TIN) for exceeding the speed limit by between 30km/h and 45km/h, which attracts a penalty of $700 and four demerit points.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Acting Inspector Travis Mills, urged motorists to drive to the conditions, and slow down.

“Posted speed limits are the maximum speed a driver should reach in good conditions. If conditions are hazardous, which includes wet weather, drivers should reduce their speed accordingly,” Acting Inspector Mills said.

“The risk of being involved in a collision increases during wet weather, even for experienced drivers who know their route well, so to see someone reaching this speed in wet conditions is very concerning and disappointing.

“Speeding is unacceptable and reckless at any time, let alone combining speed with poor weather conditions.

“Please consider the considerable risk you are putting both yourself and other road users at when you make the decision to speed – everyone has the right to get home safely.”
