Three people charged in relation to fatal Adelaide Avenue collision

Source: ACT Police

Three people have been charged with various offences in relation to their involvement in a fatal collision on Adelaide Avenue in April this year.

About 4.55am on Wednesday, 17 April 2024, police and emergency services were called to Adelaide Avenue, near State Circle, after a white Toyota Camry left the roadway, collided with a concrete barrier, and was subsequently located on its roof in the middle of the road.

One occupant was ejected from the vehicle and was transported to hospital, however he later died from his injuries.

Last month, ACT Policing confirmed a stolen black Genesis GV80 SUV was believed to have picked up two people from the scene that were in the Camry when the collision occurred – including one person who was the driver.

The stolen Genesis was located partially burnt out in Theodore on the same day as the fatal collision.

This week, four search warrants were executed at various residences in Canberra.

Following the conclusion of these search warrants, a boy and two men were arrested in relation to their alleged involvement on the morning of the collision.

  • A 15-year-old boy – alleged to be the driver of the Camry at the time of the collision – has been charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene without rendering assistance, dangerous driving, unlicenced driving, taking a motor vehicle without consent, driving a stolen motor vehicle, and exceeding the speed limit.

  • A 20-year-old Chisholm man – alleged to be a passenger in the Camry at the time of the collision – has been charged with being an accessory after the fact, riding in a stolen motor vehicle, driving a stolen motor vehicle, unlicenced driving, and exceeding the speed limit.

  • A 20-year-old Hume man – alleged to be the driver of the Genesis that picked up the occupants of the Camry – has been issued with a court attendance notice in relation to being an accessory after the fact, arson, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving a stolen motor vehicle, and three counts of exceeding the speed limit.

Superintendent of Road and Proactive Policing, Brian Diplock, said the charges that have been laid this week are as a result of a significant investigation by the Major Collision Team.

“First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the tragic circumstances surrounding this incident, where a 15-year-old boy sadly lost his life,” Superintendent Diplock said.

“Following a thorough investigation and numerous enquiries, we have been able to bring those involved in this incident before the courts.

“I would like to thank the investigators that worked meticulously throughout the last four months to determine the events that occurred that morning, and who was involved. This outcome is a testament to their efforts.

“In addition, I would also like to thank the public for their assistance. We have appealed to the community in relation to this incident several times, and received valuable information that greatly assisted investigators as a result.

“We would continue to urge anyone else with information relating to the collision to come forward. Every piece of information will assist police as the investigation continues.”

Operation Vitreus sees millions in drugs and cash seized

Source: ACT Police

ACT Policing has seized more than half a million dollars in cash and more than $3 million worth of illicit drugs following a series of search warrants across the ACT last week.

The activity was part of Operation Vitreus, a national week of action by all state and territory police forces overtly targeting the sale and distribution of illicit drugs in highly visible activities across Australia.

Between Monday and Friday (19-23 August 2024), ACT Policing executed 15 search warrants across Canberra seizing more than 1000 cannabis plants and more than 42 kilograms of dried cannabis material. Approximately 280 grams of cocaine was also seized. The combined value of the drugs is approximately $3.1 million.

A firearm and hundreds of rounds of ammunition was found at a home in Gungahlin. Also seized were illegal fireworks, steroids and a prohibited knife.

Two men were arrested following a search warrant at a property in Flynn on Thursday (22 August 2024) and those men have been charged with several offences relating to the cultivation and distribution of cannabis.

Two properties, one in Flynn and one in Fraser, and two vehicles, a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Tarago, will be restrained under proceeds of crime legislation.

The week of action resulted in four grow houses in the ACT being dismantled.

Following last week’s warrant activity, information gathered led investigators on Saturday to a fifth grow house (located in Forde). More than 200 cannabis plants were allegedly found in that home and investigations into this location are continuing.

Detective Acting Inspector Dale Ohlmus said that it is pleasing to have good intelligence that leads us to these significant outcomes.

“Working with our state and territory partners allows us to share information about local drug trafficking networks, giving us valuable information to help identify and dismantle these groups,” Detective Acting Inspector Ohlmus said.

“Illicit drugs cause harm to our community, whether that be watching a loved one struggle with addiction to being the victim of drug-related property crime, or a collision with a drug-affected driver. That’s why we’re targeting those who seek to profit from the harm caused by illicit drugs.”

Anyone with information about the sale and supply of illicit drugs should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.

Jervis Bay Road Policing Operation

Police have issued almost 40 traffic infringement notices and 10 vehicle defect notices to Jervis Bay drivers following a weekend of proactive policing.

Between 24-25 August (2024), ACT Road Policing officers visited Jervis Bay and undertook a range of traffic enforcement targeting activities.

Multiple drivers were screened for alcohol and drugs, and unfortunately, two motorists were detected driving while impaired.

One tested positive to a prescribed drug while another was driving with an alcohol level of 0.157. The driver detected for drink driving was towing a boat and preparing for a day of boating on the water.

Both drivers received immediate suspension and court attendance notices.

This activity is a timely reminder that police can be anywhere, anytime. Police also want to remind the community that operating a motor vehicle or boat while impaired by alcohol or drugs is putting theirs and other people’s lives at risk.

Witnesses sought to car fire in Beard

Source: ACT Police

ACT Policing is seeking information and witnesses to a car fire on Mountain Road, Beard on Saturday afternoon.

About 4pm on Saturday (24 August 2024) ACT Fire & Rescue received a call about a car alight on Mountain Road in Beard, which is directly behind an electrical substation and solar battery storage facility.

ACT Policing Rural Patrol was requested to attend and assist with the possible evacuation of several horses from a neighbouring paddock.

Fortunately, the fire was contained to the vehicle and a grassed area of approximately 2.5 hectares.

Police investigations into the burnt out car has established it most likely was a Kia Sportage. Police have not been able to confirm an engine or chassis number due to the extensive damage caused by the fire.

Currently, police do not have related reports of a stolen Kia Sportage in ACT or surrounding NSW Police districts.

The vehicle was stuck in tall grass on the edge of Mountain Road, and it is possible the vehicle’s exhaust caused the fire under the car which engulfed it.

Anyone who may have witnessed the fire, has information about its cause, or has dash-cam footage and who has not yet spoken to police is urged to come forward.

Anyone who can assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.  Please quote P2279018. Information can be provided anonymously.
