A 30-year-old Throsby man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after police seized cannabis plants while executing search warrants yesterday.

Earlier this year, police received information that the Hackett residence was suspected of being used to grow large amounts of cannabis.

Following an investigation, police executed a search warrant on the man’s vehicle, a residence in Hackett, and a residence in Throsby.

Upon entering the Hackett property, it was discovered that the property was being used as a grow house and that there was extensive damage caused to the inside of the house with numerous holes in the ceilings, floors, and walls.

Further, unauthorised electrical work had been conducted that exposed the public to risk.

Police observed numerous heat lamps, irrigation pipes and pumps, fans, and industrial filters in the property, and a total of 164 plants were seized during the search warrant.

The 30-year-old man has been charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of a controlled plant, possessing equipment used to cultivate controlled plants, theft, unauthorised use of electricity, and damaging property.

ACT Policing will continue to target the manufacture, sale, and distribution of illicit drugs in our community. If you are engaging in this activity, expect police to be knocking on your door before too long.

Man charged following heroin overdose death

A 24-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a woman in June this year.

On 5 June (2024) the woman was presented to North Canberra Hospital in an unconscious state and a short time later was pronounced deceased. ACT Criminal Investigations officers attended the scene and an investigation into the manner and cause of her death commenced.

As a result of that investigation, police will allege the victim agreed to be injected with heroin and the 24-year-old man did so at her request. It will also be alleged that the man failed to seek medical assistance appropriately and failed to properly administer a life-saving dose of Narcan (opioid reversal drug) at the time.

Today (Friday, 6 December 2024) the man presented to police and was charged with three offences –  manslaughter, administer a declared substance and traffic in cannabis. He is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates court this afternoon.

During this investigation (and in similar matters ACT Policing is investigating) a number of contributary factors were identified:

  • The mixture of different types of intoxicating substances which can significantly increase the risk of death to an illicit drug user.
  • The incorrect initial administration of Narcan. While Narcan nasal sprays are freely available and are relatively simple to use, if not used appropriately they provide no assistance to a person who may be overdosing.
  • The importance of monitoring people after they have consumed illicit substances and immediately calling for medical help if they are unresponsive.

ACT Policing urges all illicit drug users, especially those using depressive drugs such as heroin, to be aware of the dangers and to consider their and other users’ safety. Do not hesitate to call Triple Zero in an emergency.

ACT Policing gearing up for a safe summer

ACT Policing’s Safe Summer campaign for the 2024-25 period was launched today, encouraging the community to enjoy the festive season but to do so responsibly.

Warm weather and long summer nights see an increase in Canberrans out and about enjoying celebrations and enjoying our city.

This can also coincide with a rise in alcohol related incidents and arrests due to the rise in people, parties and events in licensed venues.

Chief Police Officer Scott Lee said this campaign encourages people to make good choices to ensure the summer season is memorable for all the right reasons.

“The Safe Summer Campaign highlights several key safety aspects we would urge people to consider heading into the summer period, including alcohol and drug consumption, road safety and personal safety,” Chief Police Officer Lee said.

“We are asking people to remember that excessive consumption of alcohol impacts on your ability to reason and make decisions, putting you at greater risk of becoming a victim of crime, or a perpetrator of crime.

“Preventing most cases of alcohol-related violence and crime from occurring comes down to behaving responsibly, and being mindful of those around you who are also looking to enjoy their summer.

“Road safety will also be a focus of this campaign, with police maintaining a high visibility presence on our roads throughout the summer with a focus being on removing impaired and speeding drivers.

“The message heading into summer is simple – have fun, be safe, and remember your night out for the right reasons by making responsible decisions.”

685 drivers caught speeding in November as police set their sights on impaired drivers

Source: ACT Police

ACT Policing’s road safety targeting during November saw 685 drivers caught speeding across Canberra, with 11 drivers caught travelling at more than 45km/h above the speed limit.

Throughout November, officers from Road Policing, and General Duties officers from all five police stations targeted speeding drivers.

685 drivers received traffic infringement notices, more than doubling October’s total of 277.

Of the 685 drivers, 11 of those were travelling at more than 45km/h over the speed limit including:

  • A 39-year-old man in a Mercedes was detected travelling 150km/h in a 90km/h zone.
  • A 29-year-old man riding a motorbike, who was a learner, was detected travelling 142km/h in a 70km/h zone.
  • A 22-year-old man in a Toyota Aurion was detected travelling 131km/h in an 80km/h zone.
  • A 49-year-old woman in a Mitsubishi Pajero was detected travelling 115km/h in a 60km/h zone.
  • A 25-year-old man riding a motorbike was detected travelling 161km/h on the Majura Parkway in a 100km/h zone.
  • An 18-year-old man in a Volkswagen Golf was detected travelling 151km/h on the Majura Parkway in a 100km/h zone. He had held a provisional licence for only a week before being caught.
  • A provisional driver in a Toyota Corolla was detected travelling 129km/h on Drakeford Drive in an 80km/h zone.
  • A 32-year-old man in a Ford Sedan was detected travelling 135km/h in an 80km/h zone.

In addition, three motorcyclists – two of which held learner licences and one who held a provisional licence – were detected traveling more than 30km/h over the speed limit.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Mark Steel, said these figures were extremely disappointing and showed that the message was not getting through to these road users.

“People who wilfully speed are gambling with not only their own lives, but the lives of other road users who deserve to get home safely, so to see these speeds that were observed throughout November is unacceptable,” Detective Inspector Steel said.

“This year we have already seen 10 lives lost on ACT roads, that is 10 too many. As a community, we all need to take a stand, and I would urge everyone to take personal responsibility every day to reduce our road toll.

“Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to control the vehicle and lengthens stopping distances, increasing both the likelihood of crashing and the severity of the crash outcome.

“When you place your hands on the wheel and your foot on the accelerator, you make the decision to speed or not. Last month, 685 drivers made the wrong choice, and they were caught.

“Speeding drivers will continue to be in our sights as we head into summer, and those who make that decision will face penalties.”

Throughout December and heading into the festive season, police will turn their focus to impaired drivers.

Drink and drug driving are serious offences and major contributors to crashes and road fatalities.

“In December, we will be targeting those who choose to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

“Roadside alcohol or drug screening can happen anywhere and at any time, and every police vehicle is equipped to be a mobile breath test station.

“We know heading into the warmer months that people will be out celebrating heading into the festive season. If you are drinking, the decision is simple, it’s drink or drive – not both.

“If you do choose to drive impaired by alcohol or drugs, you not only risk your life and the lives of others, you will be caught and face the full consequences of your actions.”

ACT Policing is renewing its call for information in relation to a home invasion that occurred in Mawson earlier this year.

Today, police are releasing CCTV footage of a silver station wagon that was possibly travelling in convoy with a vehicle believed to be the stolen Toyota Hilux.

Police are seeking information from anyone who may have seen the silver station wagon, or has any information in relation to the incident that could assist with the investigation.

Man charged with several sexual assault offences

Source: ACT Police

Last update: Friday, 29 November 2024 10:45am

Original publication: Friday, 29 November 2024 10:45am

A 36-year-old Sydney man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning charged with sexual assault offences after allegedly committing the offence of stealthing.

In the early hours of Saturday morning (23 November 2024), police allege the man committed several sexual assault offences against a woman – including the sexual act of stealthing.

Stealthing occurs when a person secretly removes a condom without a sexual partner’s consent.

Yesterday (Thursday, 28 November 2024), police located the man in Campbell where he was subsequently arrested.

He has been charged with five counts of sexual intercourse without consent, and one count of sexual assault.

The ACT criminalised stealthing as an offence in October 2021 by adding it to existing consent provisions under the territory’s Crimes Act.

ACT Policing would encourage anyone who has been a victim of stealthing to come forward and make a report to police. The legislation makes it clear this is an offence, and police will investigate all complaints of this nature thoroughly.
