Significant construction works are taking place over January to connect the light rail network to the extension to Commonwealth Park as part of the Light Rail Stage 2A project.

Major public realm improvements to this area will also be delivered as part of these works. This includes new traffic signals, street lighting and retaining walls, paving, asphalting and landscaping to prepare for light rail to run wire-free zone through the city.

These works have been scheduled during the quieter school holiday period to enable substantial construction to take place – preventing additional closures in 2026.

From 4 January 2026, work will commence at the Alinga Street light rail stop and along Northbourne Avenue between Rudd Street/Bunda Street and Vernon Circle intersection to prepare for track installation later in the month.

Works will also be taking place on Northbourne Avenue at Lyneham, between Mouat Street and Thurbon Road – adjacent to Netball ACT.

The Light Rail Stage 2A project will extend light rail from Alinga Street to Commonwealth Park, creating a seamless link from Gungahlin to Commonwealth Park, and will bring the city closer to the lake and connecting the southern part of the CBD and key education, employment and recreation destinations.

Travel impacts

Temporary closures and traffic detours will be in place throughout January to ensure works are carried out safely while commuters move around the city during this significant construction phase of the project.

From 7:00 am Sunday 4 January to 5:00 am Monday 2 February:

  • Northbourne Avenue will be fully closed to traffic in both directions between Vernon Circle and Cooyong Street, with the exception of local traffic which will be permitted to access driveways under traffic control.
  • The intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street will be fully closed, including the pedestrian crossings across Alinga Street and the Alinga Street light rail stop. Pedestrians will need to use the crossings at Rudd Street/Bunda Street (north) or London Circuit (south) during this time.

From 7:00 am Monday 12 January to 6:00 pm Friday 23 January:

  • Northbourne Avenue will be reduced to one-lane in each direction between Mouat Street and Thurbon Road.
  • The northbound lanes of Northbourne Avenue will be closed between Mouat Street and Swinden Street from 8:00 pm Friday 16 January and 6:00 Monday 19 January. Southbound travel only will be permitted during this period.

Electronic variable message signs (VMS) will be in place to direct motorists and on-road cyclists travelling through these areas. Traffic controls and signage will also be in place at all times to support road users and maintain local vehicles access to driveways.

Light rail service changes

There will be no light rail services operating between Alinga Street and Sandford Street, Mitchell, from first service on Monday 12 January to last service on Friday 23 January to allow the existing light rail network to be connected to the Stage 2A extension to Commonwealth Park.

During this time, rail replacement buses will run at the normal light rail frequency, or better, between Alinga Street and Sandford Street and continue on to Well Station Drive.

Rail replacement buses will operate from platform 4 of the city bus interchange.

Light rail services will continue to operate north of Sandford Street, from the Well Station Drive to Gungahlin Place light rail stops. The Park and Ride facilities at EPIC, Well Station Drive and Swinden Street will also remain open.

Localised noise, dust and vibration may occur during this works, and environmental controls will be in place to minimise these impacts accordingly.

Detours, signage and wayfinding at the city bus interchange and impacted light rail stops will be in place to support passengers.

City bus interchange platform changes

Platforms 1, 2 and 3 at the city bus interchange will be closed from Monday 5 January to Sunday 1 February to allow important works to be completed at the intersection of Alinga Street and Northbourne Avenue.

During this time, bus services which normally depart from these platforms will be temporarily moved to other interchange platforms on Mort Street.

Rail replacement buses will operate from platform 4 and bus services which normally depart from this platform will temporarily be moved to other interchange platforms on Mort Street.

Bus services will continue to run to the school bus holiday timetable and will depart from their normal stops outside of the city bus interchange.

Signage will be in place to assist passengers during this time.

Passengers are also reminded an interim bus network will commence from first service Monday, 2 February 2026, aligning with all students returning to school for Term 1.

Plan ahead

Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time and visit Travel Impacts – Built for CBR for updates when travelling over the holiday period.

Canberrans are also reminded there will be major traffic changes from January as part of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal Project being delivered by the National Capital Authority (NCA) on behalf of the Australian Government.

Information on the project including the impacts to motorists and roads, the public transport network and foot/bike paths can be found on the NCA website.

Detailed information on public transport services, including changes to light rail services, rail replacement buses, and the city bus interchange can be found at www.transport.act.gov.au. People can also contact Transport Canberra directly for more information by calling 13 17 10.

The ACT Government is encouraging Canberrans and visitors to get outdoors and enjoy some of our beautiful national parks and nature reserves over the holiday period. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll, a scenic lookout or a family-friendly bushwalk, there are a number of trails across the territory to explore.

Minister for City and Government Services Tara Cheyne said the parks offer something for everyone, from easy loop walks to relaxing river-side tracks.

“These walks give people the chance to connect with nature, enjoy some fresh air and appreciate the unique landscapes the ACT has to offer. With a bit of planning and care, a day out in the bush can be fun, safe and rewarding,” Minister Cheyne said.

Among the ACT’s most underrated trails are:

  • Church Rock Heritage Loop (Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve)
A signed 2.5 km heritage walk featuring short steep sections, rough surface and steps. Suitable for most fitness levels, it offers a fascinating look into Tidbinbilla’s natural and cultural past.
  • London Bridge Walk (Googong Foreshores)
An easy 4.5 km circuit through woodlands to the iconic 20,000-year-old London Bridge Arch and the heritage-listed London Bridge Homestead.
  • Mount Arawang Loop (Canberra Centenary Trail)
A short 3.5 km return walk to the highest point on Cooleman Ridge, with spectacular views to the Brindabellas.
  • Molonglo Gorge Track
A striking 6.5 km return walk along the 15-million-year-old gorge, climbing cliffs and skirting the river’s edge. The area is an important wildlife corridor, perfect for spotting rare woodland birds.

“These tracks offer beautiful scenery and a sense of discovery. They’re a chance to explore places many locals haven’t visited, right on our doorstep.” Minister Cheyne said.

With thousands of people expected to visit ACT’s parks and reserves this summer, the ACT Government is reminding everyone to plan ahead and stay safe.

“Our parks are beautiful, but they are also natural environments that can be unpredictable. Whether you’re heading out for a short stroll or a half-day adventure, preparation is essential. A little planning can make the difference between a great day out and a dangerous situation.” Minister Cheyne said.

“Visitors are encouraged to let someone know their plans, avoid walking alone, and record their party’s details in trailhead registers where available. Anyone without local contacts can register their trip with ACT Policing.

“Before you head out, research your walk, check weather conditions and choose an activity that matches your experience level. Carry plenty of water, wear sturdy footwear, pack sun protection and warm layers, and download offline maps. Conditions in our parks can change quickly.”

The ACT Government is also reminding visitors to stick to marked tracks, obey all closures, and avoid entering parks or reserves on Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger days, during Total Fire Bans, or during an active bushfire.

“If you’re already in a park and conditions deteriorate, especially during smoky weather or high fire danger, you should think very seriously about leaving. Your safety must always come first.”

Campers should only use designated sites, keep clear of unstable or fire-affected trees, and use only approved fireplaces. Mobile phone reception may be unreliable, so visitors should not rely solely on phones or GPS.

Personal locator beacons are available for hire at the Tidbinbilla and Namadgi Visitor Centres, and emergency phones are located at Cotter Campground and Casuarina Sands.

“This is a wonderful time to reconnect with nature. With the right preparation and awareness, people can enjoy everything our parks have to offer safely and responsibly.”

Before visiting, check alerts, track closures, fire danger ratings and access information on the ACT Parks website.

Released 20/12/2025

The ACT Government, in partnership with Capital Health Network (CHN), has today released the 2025–2030 ACT Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Regional Plan: The Framework, setting a clear direction for improving mental health and suicide prevention outcomes for Canberrans.

Minister for Mental Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the plan reflects a shared commitment to building a more connected, inclusive and responsive mental health system.

“Good mental health and effective suicide prevention are essential to individual wellbeing and the strength of our community,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“This Framework provides a roadmap for change, informed by lived experience and developed through collaboration across government, health services and the community.”

Minister Stephen-Smith said mental health is shaped by many factors and challenges, from housing and employment to social connection and cultural safety.

“The ACT Government is proud to collaborate with the Capital Health Network on this plan, which takes a whole-of-system and whole-of-community approach, focusing on prevention, early intervention and person-centred care so that people can access the right support when and where they need it,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“The plan complements the ACT Government’s broader investment in mental health services, including the recently released Strategic Investment Plan for community mental health services.

“We will continue our efforts in shaping a mental health system that is responsive, inclusive and accessible. The insights captured in the plan, alongside ongoing feedback and reflection will be vital as we develop the ACT Government’s Mental Health Services Plan, due for completion by the end of 2026.”

The 2025–2030 ACT Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Regional Plan: The Framework is available on the Capital Health Network website. For more information, visit Capital Health Network | Publications – ACT Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan.

Quotes attributable to Capital Health Network CEO, Stacy Leavens:

“This Framework marks the renewal of CHN and the ACT Government’s shared commitment to strengthening joint regional planning and working together to coordinate and integrate mental health care in the ACT.”

“The Framework is an essential starting point for future collaboration and reform. We look forward to continuing our work with the ACT Government, the primary care, mental health, and suicide prevention sectors, and the local community to take action under the Regional Plan and improve the health and wellbeing of people in the ACT.”

Merry recycling to all and to all less waste!

Source: Government of Australia Capital Territory

As part of ACT Government’s ‘One Government, One Voice’ program, we are transitioning this website across to our . You can access everything you need through this website while it’s happening.

Released 20/12/2025

The ACT Government is reminding Canberrans to think sustainably this holiday season and look for opportunities to reduce waste, reuse and recycle where possible.

“More rubbish and recycling is generated during the festive period than at any other time of the year,” said Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne.

“We encourage everyone to minimise their waste throughout the holidays and consider how items can be reused or recycled. Sometimes there is confusion about what can be recycled in the household recycling bin and it is important Canberrans know what they can and can’t recycle.”

The following items can go in the yellow recycling bin:

  • Christmas cards, envelopes and wrapping paper – even with small amounts of glitter and tape
  • cardboard packaging and pizza boxes –  scrape off any food waste and flatten to save room
  • all empty bottles, jars and cans
  • empty plastic containers – no need to rinse.

These items cannot go in the recycling bin:

  • plastic bags – empty the recycling out loose into the bin
  • soft plastics
  • Christmas decorations (including tinsel, trees and lights)
  • disposable coffee cups and cutlery
  • plastic toys
  • leftover food or rubbish
  • cellophane or foil wrapping
  • polystyrene
  • electronic waste, Christmas lights or batteries
  • nappies or sanitary items
  • broken crockery.

If you’re in doubt about which bin to put waste in this festive season you can search the A to Z guide for recycling and waste for local recycling and disposal options: www.act.gov.au/recyclopaedia.

“If you have a full recycling bin over the holidays, you can drop off your excess recycling at the free recycling drop off centres located in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Mitchell, Phillip and Tuggeranong. These centres are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including Christmas Day. They accept steel and aluminium cans, paper, cardboard and plastic food containers,” said Minister Cheyne.

Eligible bottles and cans can be returned for recycling through the ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) for a 10-cent refund. With the warmer weather, comes more empty drink containers and extended depot opening hours to give you more time to return them. All ACT CDS depots will be open from 8:30am – 6:00pm, every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Any waste that cannot be recycled or disposed of in household bins can be taken to the Mugga Lane resource management centre. The Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres are open every day, except Christmas Day.

Bin collections scheduled for Christmas Day, Thursday 25 December 2025, will be rescheduled to Saturday 27 December 2025.

Impacted suburbs are Aranda, Bruce, Dunlop (south of Ginninderra Drive), Evatt, Florey, Giralang, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Kaleen, Latham, Lawson, Lyneham (north of Ginninderra Drive), MacGregor, Macnamara, McKellar, Page, Scullin, Strathnairn and Weetangera.

All other collection days, including Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will be collected as per normal.

“The summer holidays give Canberrans an opportunity to do a festive clean-out. Any unwanted items including clothing, toys and furniture in good condition can be donated to a charity store during business hours, including to Goodies Junction in Mitchell or Mugga Lane,” said Minister Cheyne.

“You can also book a bulky waste collection with all Canberra households eligible for one free service per financial year of up to 2 cubic metres. Canberrans living in an apartment or townhouse with shared waste can contact their body corporate or building manager to make a booking on their behalf.

“I urge the community to correctly dispose of hazardous waste such gas bottles, batteries and items with embedded batteries, as they can cause fires if placed in household bins. Residents can visit the A-Z guide to find out locations to safely dispose of hazardous waste.

“We can all do our part this holiday season to ensure we reduce waste, reuse and recycle where possible.”

Last update: Friday, 19 December 2025 2:04pm

Original publication: Friday, 19 December 2025 9:05am

ACT Policing has charged a 29-year-old NSW man after he allegedly travelled to Canberra to have sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Police allege the man initiated contact with the young person in January (2025) through social media and engaged in ongoing conversations that became sexualised, despite being aware the girl was 14-years-old.

The communications later moved to a messaging application, where police allege sexually suggestive messages and images were sent by the man and plans were made to meet in Canberra.

Yesterday (18 December 2025), when the arranged meeting was planned to occur, the young person reported the matter to police and the investigation was referred to ACT Policing’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team (SACAT).

About 1pm, police attended a Canberra hotel and arrested the 29-year-old man. During a search of the man’s back pack police located a digital camera and a box of condoms.

He will face the ACT Magistrate Court today (19 December 2025) charged with using a carriage service to procure under 16 sexual activity.

ACT Policing reminds the community that online grooming is a serious offence and encourages parents, carers and young people to remain vigilant about online interactions.

Anyone with concerns about inappropriate online behaviour involving children is urged to report it to police.
