fter returning from Fiji and the Solomon Islands and signing historic agreements with Fiji and Vanuatu, Prime Minister Albanese will host Pacific leaders from Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tonga in Brisbane for ongoing regional security talks.

These important meetings will take place on the same day that Australia’s historic mutual defence treaty with PNG comes into force.

Prime Minister Albanese will hold bilateral meetings with each of the Leaders in Brisbane to discuss regional security, trade and economic growth opportunities.

He will then host the Leaders at the grand final of the State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium. The Albanese Labor Government is helping grow rugby league across the Pacific.

The meetings come at a time when the Government is making a range of breakthroughs in the Pacific such as:

• < The Vuvale Union and Ocean of Peace Alliance with Fiji (2026)
• < The Pukpuk Mutual Defence Treaty with Papua New Guinea (2025)
• < The Nakamal Agreement with Vanuatu (2026)
• < The Falepili Union with Tuvalu (2023)

• An agreed statement of intent to < elevate our partnership with Tonga
• Rebuilding Australia’s international development program, expanding Pacific labour mobility and establishing the Pacific Engagement Visa.

The Brisbane meetings will come off the back of the Prime Minister’s visit to Honiara – where Australia is advancing a new era of cooperation with the Solomon Islands.

Northern Territory Police have seized cannabis, methamphetamine and 200 unused deal bags after a random traffic stop in Katherine yesterday.

Members from the Dog Operations Unit conducted a search of a vehicle in the Katherine township, where Drug Detection Dog Rafa indicated to the presence of drugs.

Police located a traffickable quantity of cannabis, a less than traffickable quantity of methamphetamine, 200 unused deal bags and a used methamphetamine pipe.

A 42-year-old Borroloola man was issued a Notice to Appear in the local court in for:

• Drive Motor Vehicle While Unlicensed
• Possess Schedule 1 Dangerous Drug – Less than Traffickable Quantity
• Possess Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug – Traffickable Quantity
• Possess Thing to Administer a Dangerous Drug

Acting Superintendent Meacham King said Rafa’s nose had done the hard work.

“The look on Drug Detection Dog Rafa’s face says it all…don’t do drugs. Don’t deal drugs. And if you do, don’t expect to get past him.”

“If you’re carrying drugs, there’s a good chance Rafa will find them.”

Police continue to target the supply and possession of illicit drugs across the Northern Territory.

Anyone with information about the supply of illicit drugs is urged to contact police on 131 444. Anonymous reports can be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sharpens Resmed’s focus on high-growth sleep and connected care markets

This move reflects Resmed’s 2030 strategy by focusing on high-growth, scalable opportunities in sleep health, breathing health and connected home-based healthcare. The divestiture also strengthens Resmed’s ability to reallocate capital and resources toward innovation, operational scale and long-term value creation across its connected, home-based care ecosystem.

MatrixCare provides software solutions to more than 15,000 providers and supports skilled nursing, senior living and long-term care, life planning communities and home health and hospice care.

It excludes Resmed’s other software businesses, Brightree in the U.S. and MEDIFOX DAN in Germany.

The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of Resmed’s fiscal year 2027, subject to required regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Until closing, MatrixCare will continue to operate as part of Resmed, with no changes to customer service or support.

And we entrust its future to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Honiara City Council.

In doing so, we pay tribute to the dedication, skill and hard work of everyone who has helped turn a remarkable vision, into a transformative reality.

On a day when your proud nation celebrates independence, this centre is a celebration of the partnership between our citizens and our nations.

This place is proof of what Australia and Solomon Islands can achieve when we work together.

When we create local jobs – and empower locals with the skills to do them – from construction to health care.

When we build for local conditions, with reliable clean energy and the resilience to handle extreme weather so that if disaster strikes, these essential services are there when people need them most.

And this place also demonstrates what we can do when we trust in community.

rime Minister Anthony Albanese has concluded his visit to Solomon Islands, reinforcing Australia’s deep and enduring commitment to the Pacific and advancing a new era of cooperation between the two countries.

In Honiara, Prime Minister Albanese met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale and members of his government. Prime Minister Albanese also had the opportunity to address the Solomon Islands 48th Independence Day celebrations – the first foreign leader to do so – where he announced a $10.2 million package of education support for Solomon Islands.

The package includes assistance for the Ministry of Education to develop a roadmap towards its implementation of providing free education, new books for every primary school student, infrastructure upgrades and uplift in curriculum standards for up to twelve Rural Training Centres throughout Solomon Islands.

The Prime Minister also announced the conclusion of an MOU for the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Police Academy, as part of the RSIPF expansion agreement. This MOU facilitates the comprehensive support and advanced training requirements for the Police Academy in Honiara. This will support Solomon Islands to expand its sovereign police force and contribute to its own security and that of the region.

Before departing, Prime Minister Albanese attended the handover of the Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre, a $45 million investment by Australia which will expand maternal and primary health services in Honiara.

The end of this school year will also be the end of an amazing 50-year contribution to community safety in the Mt Dandenong area.

Kalorama-Mt Dandenong Fire Brigade member Ken Stewart, or ‘Fireman Ken’ as he is known throughout the community, will be stepping down from his role as a fire safety presenter at the local primary school and pre-school. 

Ken started delivering fire safety training to the local Mt Dandenong Primary School and Mt Dandenong Pre-school in 1976, and since then has educated an estimated 10,000 children over 50 years. 

These sessions included classroom sessions, fire truck visits, visits to the fire station and forest walks discussing fuel and risks. Many of these children are now parents themselves (their children also being taught fire safety by Ken) and some of these students have become members of CFA and other emergency services. Unsurprisingly, Ken is a legend in the local area.

Wendy Britt, ex-Principal of Mt Dandenong Primary School described Ken’s work as “absolutely outstanding”. Educating the children without frightening them was a priority – as was getting the message home to families. Ken used humour to put children at ease and had endless patience. It was important for the children to understood what to do in smoke and that that a firefighter could be your friend.

In addition to his local commitment, Ken was a casual educator with CFA for more than 10 years. During this time he drove a mobile education unit around the state, delivering fire safety messaging at more than 500 schools and more than 50,000 school students. His efforts have equipped countless families and young people with essential knowledge that has strengthened community resilience. 

Ken said he will miss teaching fire safety as it is such an important topic and he will miss the fun and excitement that the students bring to his life.

When he goes into the local pizza takeaway to pick up his order, the young man serving him will often call out, “Hey, Fireman Ken”.

He will always be Fireman Ken to the local community.

On behalf of the people of Australia, it is my great honour to congratulate you and your country on 48 years of independence.

We gather today to commemorate those whose vision made independence possible, half a century ago.

To celebrate the change and progress those five decades have brought to the life of your nation and the lives of its citizens.

And to dedicate ourselves to building on what has gone before us.

To realising a future of greater opportunity, stability and prosperity for all.

It is an ongoing source of pride for Australia that we were the first country to formally recognise Solomon Islands through the establishment of diplomatic relations.

And that occurred on the 7th July, 1978.

Day one.

Because Australia already knew the kindness and the courage that lived in these lands.

We had learned this amidst the devastation of war.

And we had pledged to remember it always in peace:

The bravery, skill and sacrifice of Scouts and Coastwatchers.

And the selfless humanity of Solomon Islanders who risked their own lives to rescue and shelter Australian sailors and airmen.

Australia was proud to count Solomon Islands as a friend long before your first day as a member of the international community.

And we are proud to have Solomon Islands as a neighbour, a partner, a friend and a cherished member of the Pacific Family, every day.

It is fitting that 12 members of the Australian Army Band are performing together with the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Band.

Learning from each other and moving forward together, in harmony.

Independence for Solomon Islands was formalised by an act of British Parliament but independence was brought to life by a thousand different acts of leadership, imagination and co-operation, from the people of these islands.

Because the sovereignty of independence is not a condition that one country can bestow on another.

It is a right and a responsibility.

Sovereignty, stability, prosperity and peace are not born of one moment in time.

They are built, maintained and secured down the generations.

Not just in the high principles of global forums but in the universal building blocks of a good life.

A healthy family, a secure home, a safe community.

The opportunity of education and the dignity of work.

The connections to region, culture and the great blue Pacific.

These are the continuing acts of independence that bring power, progress and sovereignty to individuals and nations alike.

I have been impressed by Prime Minister Wale’s vision to build a better life for each and every Solomon Islander.

And as we celebrate the past, we look forward to the future.

A future with a stronger, peaceful and more prosperous Solomon Islands.

As you continue your journey we also look to our own shared future, negotiating a new comprehensive treaty that will bring our great countries even closer together.

Forty eight years ago today, the Union Jack was respectfully lowered and a new flag was raised.

A flag shaped by the nation it served:

The green of its forests.

The gold of its sands.

The blue of the ocean that all our Pacific family call home.

And the stars that have guided the people of these lands for tens of thousands of years.

Long may the flag of Solomon Islands fly.
