The ACT Government has announced three new funding recipients that will help solve energy challenges in the ACT and accelerate the uptake of renewable energy initiatives.

Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water, Suzanne Orr, said these projects funded through the Energy Innovation Fund help unlock new opportunities for industry and drive innovation, while also supporting the ACT Government’s goal of net zero emissions by 2045.

“These grant recipients, funded through the Energy Innovation Fund, highlight the impressive creativity and strategic thinking of Canberra-based organisations, as well as those seeking to establish a presence in the Territory,” Minister Orr said.

“Among the three projects are innovative solutions to support the transition off gas and towards electrification and the launch of a cutting-edge aircraft training and maintenance hub in the ACT, powered by 100% renewable energy. Paving the way for sustainable regional air travel.

“These projects and the businesses behind them are helping to solve policy and technological challenges in energy transition, drive up collaboration and investment between all levels of industry, government and community, and inspire industry to take concrete steps in adapting to a changing climate.

“I strongly encourage any Canberra-based businesses with ideas on how to solve energy challenges and accelerate the uptake of renewable energy initiatives to apply for the next round.

Congratulations to these recipients, I look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition.” said Minister Orr.

The three newly funded projects through the Energy Innovation Fund are:

  • Indi Flight Pty Ltd (Learn2Fly) – for the Technology Demonstration Stream with a grant of $750,000
Launching an electric aircraft training and maintenance hub in the ACT, powered by 100% renewable energy. This initiative supports sustainable regional air travel.
  • Aratherm Services Pty Ltd – for the Technology Demonstration Stream with a grant of $450,000
The ‘Commercialising Electric Heat’ initiative promotes industrial decarbonisation by making electric heating solutions more viable. It helps manufacturers reduce gas use and improve energy resilience.
  • Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN) – for the Innovation Ecosystem – Innovation Clusters Stream with a grant of $195,000
The ACET (Accelerate Canberra’s Energy Transition) project connects researchers, startups, students, and investors to drive innovation in electrification, grid resilience, gas transition, and recycling.

Since 2016, the $17 million Energy Innovation Fund has been made possible through industry contributions secured through the ACT Government’s pioneering Renewables Reverse Auctions.

The Fund has supported more than 20 ACT-based projects across three different grant streams: the Technology Demonstration Grant, the Policy Challenge Grant, and the Innovation Ecosystem Grant.

The program is open for applications year-round and applications are assessed twice a year. The next assessment deadline is on 30 September 2025.

Learn more about the grants and how to apply on the Everyday Climate Choices website.

Quote attributed to Andrew Scheiffers, Head of Operations, Learn2fly:

“Learn2fly look forward to using this grant to take a step forward in electrifying the aviation system. Starting with small training planes we will be striving to develop processes, approval and training for flight and maintenance crews.

We thank the ACT government for the support and belief in this pursuit. We look forward to working together to deliver a positive impact to the environment and the global travel system.”

The transformation of Phillip District Enclosed Oval continues with Stage 2 upgrades starting, bringing enhanced sporting facilities to the Woden Valley.

Following the successful delivery of a state-of-the-art new sports pavilion earlier this year, the ACT Government is continuing its investment through the delivery of additional improvements that will enhance the quality of the sporting fields and allow for increased usage.

Stage 2 works will include:

  • Installation of a new irrigation system to improve turf quality (for both the Enclosed Oval and adjacent Phillip District Playing Fields)
  • Construction of a new cricket turf wicket
  • The provision of sportsground drainage to the playing surface
  • Installation of sportsground lighting to support match play
  • New storage shed and some upgrades to the existing Michael O’Connor Grandstand

Canberra based construction company Projex Building, which successfully delivered the new pavilion in Stage 1, will continue its involvement in Stage 2 – ensuring continuity and once again bringing local expertise to the next phase of the project.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry said the upgrades will ensure the Phillip District Enclosed Oval continues to meet the needs of Canberra’s growing sporting community.

“The commencement of Stage 2 is an exciting next step in the transformation of Phillip District Enclosed Oval into a premier venue for local sport,” Minister Berry said.

“These improvements will support a wide range of sporting codes, elevating the venue to one of Canberra’s leading sporting facilities”.

The upgrades follow extensive consultation with key sporting groups including Canberra Royals Rugby Union Football Club, Brumbies Rugby, Canberra Region Rugby League, Woden Valley Rams Rugby League Club, Weston Creek Molonglo Cricket Club, and Cricket ACT.

The second stage of upgrades will be completed in early 2026.

The ACT Government is proud to celebrate Foster Care Week 2025 (14 – 20 September), recognising the extraordinary contribution foster and kinship carers make in the lives of children in their care and the wider community.

Minister for Children, Youth and Families, Michael Pettersson MLA, acknowledged the vital role carers play in the lives of vulnerable children and young people.

“Foster carers provide a safe and nurturing home for children and young people who are unable to live with their own families. They open their doors and hearts to those in need—often at short notice—offering the support and stability every child deserves,” Minister Pettersson said.

There are many types of foster care, including short-term, long-term and emergency care, each playing a crucial role in meeting the diverse needs of children and young people during challenging times.

The ACT Government continues to invest in reforms that strengthen the out-of-home care system, including the implementation of the Next Steps for Our Kids 2022–2030 strategy and the Signs of Safety practice framework, which place children and families at the centre of decision-making.

“We are committed to ensuring every child in care has the opportunity to thrive, and that carers are supported every step of the way,” Minister Pettersson said.

The ACT Government works in partnership with trusted foster care providers, including Barnardos, Key Assets Australia, and OzChild, who provide ongoing support to carers through training, guidance and a caring community.

Individuals and families interested in becoming foster carers are encouraged to visit www.act.gov.au/community/families/becoming-a-foster-carer or contact one of the ACT’s foster care providers to learn more.

Increased enforcement at level crossings in the Southern Highlands

Source: Mental Health Australia

Motorists are reminded to be vigilant and follow the road rules as Transport for NSW and NSW Police join forces to raise awareness and penalise reckless behaviour at level crossings in the Southern Highlands region.

Coinciding with Rural Road Safety Month, NSW Police will be patrolling two level crossings in Moss Vale and Calwalla between 15 and 26 September to increase safety and remind motorists to slow down and obey level crossing rules.

Rural Road Safety Month is an annual initiative of the Australian Road Safety Foundation supported by Transport for NSW.

Transport for NSW Senior Manager Public Transport Safety Programs, Luke Wilby, said ignoring the signs, flashing lights, boom gates and road markings at level crossings can have devastating consequences.

“Just because you don’t see a train at a level crossing, doesn’t mean it won’t be at the level crossing in a few seconds. Drivers who underestimate the high speed of trains and ignore the rules are recklessly putting their life and the lives of other people at risk.

“With more than 30 trains travelling daily through some level crossings at high speeds, a few seconds can be the difference between reaching your destination safely or losing your life,” Mr Wilby said.

“Sadly, nine people died and nine were seriously injured as a result of 66 collisions between trains and road vehicles at level crossings in NSW between July 2015 and 30 June 2025.

“We want everyone to return home safely, but we can only do that if motorists and pedestrians behave responsibly at level crossings,” Mr Wilby said.

Motorists who gamble with their safety at level crossings could face three demerit points and a $562 fine.

Traffic and Highway Patrol, Operations Manager, Inspector Michael Walsh, said drivers needed to be patient and vigilant at level crossings so they reached their destination safely.

“A split second decision at a level crossing can have life changing consequences, as some trains can take more than a kilometre to come to a complete stop, so even if they see you, they can’t stop.

“We continue to work with Transport for NSW to raise awareness about the potentially fatal consequences of unsafe driving behaviour at level crossings.

“We are urging all motorists to be patient and pay attention to the signs, as there is no excuse for putting lives on the line by rushing to the other side,” Insp Walsh said.

Two vehicles clamped and two motorbikes seized in first few days after launch of Police Operation Full Stop

Monday, 15 September 2025 – 11:28 am.

Police have clamped two vehicles and seized two motorbikes in the first two days since the launch of Operation Full Stop – an ongoing police initiative targeting persistent and dangerous driving in the Clarence Municipality.
Yesterday (Sunday), police seized an unregistered trail bike following a head-on crash about 2.30pm on Duntroon Drive at Rokeby.
Acting Inspector Penny Reardon said, “a trailbike carrying a 19-year-old rider and a 17-year-old pillion passenger collided head on with a car, in a crash that could have easily ended in tragedy.”
“Both the rider and pillion were ejected from the bike and with only the pillion wearing a helmet – it’s lucky neither were seriously hurt.”
The driver and passenger of the vehicle were not physically injured.
“Riding unlicensed and unregistered trailbikes on public roads, especially without proper safety gear is reckless, and puts lives at risk.”
Police have seized the trailbike, and the rider will be proceeded against for multiple traffic related offences.
“Police announced Operation Full Stop last Friday, and it’s disappointing that in the first two days after the launch, we had this dangerous and reckless incident, and a further two in the Southern area on Friday night.”
About 7pm on Friday night, a motorcycle was detected travelling at 150km/h in the 80km/h zone on the Brooker Highway at Derwent Park. Police have seized the bike for 28 days, and the 21-year-old rider has been charged with several offences.
Later Friday night, about 10pm, police clamped two vehicles for 28 days following hooning offences at Cambridge Park. One offender has been located and will be summonsed for the offences, and investigations are ongoing to locate the other.
“Police will continue to target dangerous and reckless behaviours on the roads, and urge anyone who witnesses incident to report them for investigation.”
Matters can be reported to police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
Video footage can also be provided to police through our online portal at www.police.tas.gov.au/report.

New Artists on View exhibition explores ancient roots

Source: New South Wales Ministerial News

Ancient Roots in the New World is a new exhibition celebrating the beauty, history and symbolism of the olive tree (Olea europaea), opening on Thursday, September 18 at Dudley House on View Street.

Curated by Ceilidh Meo, the exhibition brings together a diverse group of emerging and established Bendigo region artists and craftspeople including Amanda Peluso, Andre Sardone, Ben Wrigley, Ilka White, Isstra Bevilacqua, Jill Connors, Kim Lowe, Lauren Starr, Linda Hermens, Rhayven Jane, Sharon Greenaway, and Sue Wyer.

The exhibition features works across a range of media: sculptural and industrial installations, performance art, drawing, textiles, ceramics, and items made from olive trees such as beads, teas, oil, soap and pickled fruit.

It also highlights Bendigo’s UNESCO City and Region of Gastronomy designation and one of its signature products, olives and olive oil, with a video featuring olive oil production and a small-scale olive oil press installation, specially donated for the exhibition from environmental education centre CERES in Brunswick.

Curator Ceilidh Meo said the exhibition was inspired by the daily-changing beauty of her own olive grove.

“The aim is to showcase the bounty, beauty, history and symbolism of the olive tree through food and artworks made from or inspired by local specimens,” Ceilidh said.

“Olives have a long and venerable history in human culture. This exhibition is about bringing a sense of the sacred back to our food – a sense of appreciation and wonder for the abundance around us and the people who create it.

“Ancient Roots in the New World is also a fundraiser for startup costs for the Long Road Olive Co-operative LTD, a not-for-profit co-operative of small-scale olive growers with between 1-3,000 trees. Artworks are not expected to be donated by the artists.

“Instead, the artists will set a reserve price for their works, with a silent auction to run throughout the opening week of the exhibition. The Long Road Olive Co-operative will take a 30% commission on the final price of the works at the completion of the auction. This means that ultimately the artists could earn a higher price for their works than through traditional sales channels.”

Exhibition highlights include:

  • Goddess of the Grove – interactive diorama with olive branches, providing a backdrop against which participants can be photographed
  • Ode to Athena – soundscape retelling the myth of Athena and the olive tree
  • Peace, Prosperity and Purpose – textile triptych exploring olive symbolism
  • Sculptural works created from olive wood

The free exhibition opens at Dudley House, 60 View Street on Thursday, September 18 with an official celebration at 6pm on Friday, September 19. All are welcome.

The exhibition is supported by the City of Greater Bendigo’s Artists on View program.
