Canberra will be home to nearly 700,000 people by 2050, with the population to hit 800,000 in 2065, the latest population projections confirm.

Growth is expected across all Canberra districts. While the total ACT population levels in the latest report are largely consistent with 2022 projections, the most significant changes relate to the redistribution of growth across ACT’s districts over the projections.

The updated projections anticipate where Canberrans will choose to live, and reflects growth in the Molonglo Valley, along Canberra’s north-western edge, along the length of the light rail corridor to Woden, as well as a shift to growth in the Tuggeranong Valley.

Published today, the ACT Population Projections 2025-2065 show that the Territory’s population is expected to increase by 319,000 over the next 40 years, surpassing 800,000 in 2065.

Starting from the December 2024 population of 482,000, the ACT population is expected to grow on average by around 8,000 people per year.

Migration is expected to continue as the main contributor of population growth over the next 40 years as the fertility rate is expected to decline.

While Canberra will continue to have a young population the projections show a moderate ageing of the ACT population relative to projections of other Australian jurisdictions, with migration continuing to play an important contribution to the age structure of the ACT population.

Treasurer Chris Steel said the ACT Government continuously planned and delivered services for our growing population.

“We’re investing in our people and our city to ensure that, as our population expands, we continue to meet the needs of our community,” Minister Steel said.

“We’re delivering healthcare, when and where people need it; building new and upgraded schools in our suburbs; expanding the light rail network to Woden; and delivering more diverse and affordable housing.

“Planning changes, including the missing middle housing reforms will see more housing capacity in our existing suburbs to support our growing population. This will see districts like Tuggeranong growing not declining.”

Minister Steel said the ACT’s future population would determine the type of city Canberra would be in coming years.

“Understanding population projections are important for Canberrans to understand the city’s future, and for many aspects of planning, research and policy development and advice,” Minister Steel said.

The ACT’s long-term population projections represent a significant body of work that is prepared using ACT Treasury’s own in-house model, which was originally commissioned from the Australian National University.

The key drivers in the model are births, deaths (natural increase) and net migration (overseas, interstate and internal). A new feature of this report is the shift to a ‘dynamic’ rather than ‘static’ model of housing which better reflects the reality of new residents moving in to established suburbs.

The ACT Population Projections 2025-2065 are available on the Treasury website.

New recycling facility a step closer

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

The new facility will be capable of processing up to 115,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables per year.

In brief:

  • A new recycling facility for the ACT will be built in Hume.
  • Demolition of the previous damaged recycling facility is underway.
  • Veolia will partner with the ACT Government to design, build and operate the new facility.
  • The new recycling facility is expected to be operational in 2028.

A new recycling facility for Canberra is a step closer with demolition of the previous damaged facility underway.

The new facility will be built on the former site of the previous facility in Hume, which was shut down at the end of 2022 due to extensive fire damage.

Construction of the new facility is due to begin in 2026.

Demolition of damaged facility

The previous recycling facility was shut down in 2022 due to extensive damage caused by a fire, believed to be caused by the incorrect disposal of batteries.

Demolition of the previous facility has begun and will take several months.

During the demolition, the public is advised to obey contractor exclusion zones and stay a safe distance away from the site.

A new state-of-the-art facility

Veolia will work with the ACT Government to design, build and operate the new, larger facility.

The new facility will be capable of processing up to 115,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables per year – up to 50,000 tonnes more per year than the previous facility.

The facility’s new advanced sorting technology, includes:

  • sophisticated automatic recognition
  • screens to separate paper
  • laser optical identification with air jets to separate plastics
  • powerful magnets to extract metals.

The facility has been designed with state-of-the-art fire detection, mitigation and control systems to safeguard the site from fires, which can be caused by items such as lithium batteries or gas bottles finding their way into the recycling stream.

Interim recycling

Until the new facility is built, there are no changes planned to current recycling management in the ACT.

The current contractor, Re.Group, will continue to manage interim recycling services for the ACT until the new facility is complete.

The new recycling facility is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Recycling Modernisation Fund.

The new recycling facility is expected to be operational by 2028.

Police piece together theft of Lego

Source: New South Wales – News

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the largest individual seizure of stolen goods uncovered during the Operation Measure retail theft initiative.

On Saturday 30 August, officers from Operation Measure, Western District CIB and Eastern Adelaide and Western Adelaide conducted a search at a Royal Park address.

The search resulted in the discovery of around 2,500 individual items – including 1,700 unopened boxes of Lego – worth $250,000.

Operation Measure officers believe the goods were stolen from department stores across the metropolitan area and were likely being sold on online sites. The haul was so large that Water Operations officers were utilised to remove three truck loads of goods from the premises.

A 41-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with theft and unlawful possession. He will appear in Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on 30 September 2025.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Metropolitan Operations Service John De Candia said the arrest was a result of collaboration between the retail industry and police.

“The size of the haul is significant and indicates the depth of the alleged offending we will allege has been taking place,’’ he said.

“Operation Measure will continue to target recidivist offenders we believe are responsible for the majority of the offending of this nature.

“This type of theft is not victimless. Those who purchase cheap goods from online sites are unwittingly facilitating this crime and we would urge them to consider this.’’

Operation Measure involves police and the retail industry working together to identify offending patterns and those responsible for retail theft. It targets recidivist offenders responsible for theft and those who use violence and threats during their crimes.

Operation Measure has had a positive impact on retail theft with a significant reduction in incidents since its inception. Almost 6,000 (5,927) retail thefts have been linked to nominated persons of interest, leading to about 2,500 (2,425) apprehensions (Arrests/Reports) linked to nominated persons of interest.

The June rolling crime statistics reveal shop theft in SA continued to decline with a six per cent decline reported – 18,343 to 17,225 offences – which is attributed to ongoing proactive operations. This is the eighth successive decline in reported shoplifting offences.

Safety work to deliver smoother trips on the Newell Highway in northern NSW

Source: Mental Health Australia

Road improvement work starting next week on the Newell Highway between Moree and Boggabilla will deliver smoother, safer journeys for motorists travelling in the state’s north.

The NSW Government has invested $6.35 million for the work at Tackinbri, about 76 kilometres north of Moree, on a key regional route for locals, tourists and transport operators.

Transport for NSW Acting Executive Director Partnerships and Integration West Holly Davies said early work to upgrade culverts would start on Monday 8 September, with work on the main safety upgrades to get under way later in the year.

“A key focus of the safety upgrades will be to reduce the risk of head-on crashes along this 1.6-kilometre stretch of the Newell Highway,” Ms Davies said.

“We live in a large state which means we sometimes have to travel long distances on the road and fatigue can become a factor.

“One of the most important features of the safety work at Tackinbri will be the installation of a wide centre line that will put greater distance between oncoming lanes of traffic to help avoid head-on crashes that can be the tragic result of momentary lapses of concentration.

“The work will also include extensive road reconstruction and surface improvements that will provide a more resilient surface requiring less ongoing maintenance and fewer future disruptions for motorists.”

The work at Tackinbri continues a program of upgrades on the Newell Highway for the benefit of all residents and motorists in the state’s north.

Work on the heavy duty pavement upgrade of the highway between Narrabri and Moree that started in July 2022 is near completion and a separate safety upgrade at North Croppa, just north of Moree, wound up in November 2024.

These projects, along with the planned work at Tackinbri, will deliver an upgraded Newell Highway from Narrabri to Boggabilla, providing motorists with a safer, smoother ride all the way from Narrabri to the Queensland border.

Once early work starts at Tackinbri, changed traffic conditions will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Road users are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control, including single lane closures and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit.

New live signage around Narellan to advise drivers of congestion and warnings in times of flood

Source: Mental Health Australia

Motorists at Smeaton Grange, Mt Annan and Harrington Park will benefit from new permanent electronic (VMS) signage to be installed at three locations on the western, northern and eastern legs of the intersection at The Northern Road, Camden Valley Way and Narellan Road.

The new signage will advise drivers of road conditions in the area and be particularly useful in relaying up to date information during times of adverse weather, such as when roads are flooded.

With the area’s population growing, a need to improve real-time information was identified after events in 2021 which saw sections of Camden Valley Way unpassable due to weather.

The new VMS will be installed at locations where drivers are given up to date information to help them make decisions on alternate routes to avoid congestion or are committed to a location adversely affected by weather.

The sites being selected will also have the benefit of being near main power supplies, meaning they are more likely to remain active even during the worst events.

With work now commencing on the new signage, the local network will be integrated into the Transport Management Centre, providing up to date real-time information.

Motorists are urged to exercise care and be aware there may be speed restrictions while work is being undertaken.

Permanent signs are expected to be installed by October 2025.
