National Reconciliation Week offers all Australians the opportunity to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation.

Running from 27 May to 3 June, the City is proudly marking the week with free events and activities, including a special screening of the 1980 Aboriginal Country Music Festival on Wednesday 28 May at the Wanneroo Regional Museum.

This year’s theme – Bridging Now to Next – calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

The City will be hosting drop-in sessions at the Wanneroo Regional Museum, where children can enjoy a range of engaging National Reconciliation Week themed activities.

Once again, the City has sponsored a Reconciliation Week Street Banner to be displayed along Kings Park Road in West Perth as part of an annual initiative facilitated by Reconciliation WA.

The City is also currently finalising its fifth Reconciliation Action Plan, a key document detailing the City’s commitment to continuously working towards improving relationships, opportunities and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

Greater Bendigo Mayor and CEO launch 2025 Active Living Census

Source: New South Wales Ministerial News

The 2025 Active Living Census (ALC) was launched today by Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf and CEO Andrew Cooney and is now available for Loddon Campaspe residents to complete online for a four week period.

The ALC, which was conducted in Greater Bendigo in both 2014 and 2019 is a vital regional survey that will collect important data on residents’ health, wellbeing, and lifestyle habits to guide future community planning and investment.

Healthy Loddon Campaspe, a Victorian State Government-funded initiative aimed at improving health outcomes in the region, is delivering the 2025 ALC in partnership with the six local government areas of Greater Bendigo, Campaspe, Central Goldfields, Loddon, Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander Shires.

Covering key topics such as physical activity, nutrition, life satisfaction, and access to recreational opportunities, the ALC will provide a snapshot of how people in Greater Bendigo and our region live and what barriers they may face to staying healthy and active.

Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said she urged all residents to take part by completing the online census survey.

“The Active Living Census is a crucial tool for understanding the health and wellbeing needs of our community,” Cr Metcalf said.

“The more people who participate, the clearer the picture we get. We strongly encourage everyone, young or old, active or not, to take 15 minutes to fill it out. It’s your health, your community, your say.”

Greater Bendigo CEO Andrew Cooney said thanks to strong community involvement in the 2014 and 2019 ALC’s, the City has been able to deliver a range of projects.

“Using the information from the last census we have gained funding towards rolling out the Walk, Cycle Greater Bendigo Strategy, developments at North Bendigo and Golden Square Recreation Reserves and Ewing Park as well as upgrades to local walking paths, lighting and recreation infrastructure, and new programs that positively impact the health and wellbeing of our community,” Mr Cooney said.

“The insights from this year’s ALC will be just as valuable in shaping our city’s future and the City is calling on every household to help build a healthier Greater Bendigo by completing the online census.”

Completing the census online is easy, anonymous, and takes around 15 minutes.

Every response helps inform decisions that affect your daily life – from improving bike paths, playgrounds and facilities, to increasing access to healthy food and ways to be physically active.

Everyone who completes the census online will have the chance to be in the draw to win their share of $10,000 in prizes in the early bird and weekly prize draws.

ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand trade meeting

Source: Australian Attorney General’s Agencies

Today, I met with my counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and New Zealand to discuss how we can work together to address challenges to the rules-based trading system and unlock greater opportunities and benefits for our region.

There is tremendous potential to grow Australian jobs and businesses through in-creased trade with Southeast Asia, and our work with ASEAN and New Zealand is key to unlocking these benefits.

This includes improving the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand free trade agreement, by cutting red tape, and making it easier for small and medium sized businesses to benefit from trade with Southeast Asia.

More than half a million Australian jobs are linked to trade with Southeast Asia, and we expect this number to grow as the Australian Government implements recommendations from Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

This includes boosting investment in the region through our $2 billion Southeast Asia Infrastructure Financing Facility and Investment Deal Teams, providing ongoing opportunities for Australian businesses to enter the region and maximise the potential of our economic ties.

Australian, New Zealand and ASEAN Ministers released a joint statement on our shared commitment to regional trade.

Youths charged for aggravated robbery and ram raid offences – Darwin

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

Two youths have been charged following a series of offences across Darwin early this morning.

Yesterday afternoon, a 14-year-old male allegedly fled the courts and removed his electronic monitoring device prior to his court appearance. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest and police were notified.

Around 1:35am, the 14-year-old male and a female youth allegedly approached a man at a service station along Bagot Road, Coconut Grove. The male youth allegedly grabbed the victim from behind and demanded his vehicle keys before a struggle ensued. During the altercation the victim was dragged towards Bagot Road and narrowly avoided being struck by a passing vehicle.

The victim was then able to pull himself free before running a short distance from the location, with the alleged offenders following and threatening him with a knife and demanding his keys. The victim handed the offenders the keys and they fled the scene in his Toyota Camry.

A short time later, the stolen Toyota Camry was allegedly used to ram through fire escape doors at a business in Eaton, where the offenders entered the premises and stole a quantity of alcohol.

It is alleged the offenders then travelled to the Darwin Waterfront precinct where they used the vehicle to ram the doors of a convenience store and subsequently stole cigarettes and fled the scene in the scene.

Around 3:45am, officers from Strike Force Trident and the Dog Operations Unit sighted the Toyota Camry travelling through Coconut Grove and attempted to apprehend it; however, the vehicle failed to stop. A pursuit was initiated through Millner and back into Coconut Grove, where the vehicle was abandoned on Litchfield Court.

A short foot pursuit was initiated, and both youths were apprehended without further incident. Officers recovered the stolen alcohol, cigarettes and the weapon allegedly used during the robbery.

The 14-year-old male has been charged with:

  • Breach of bail
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Drive/use motor vehicle without consent

Tourist rescued after becoming lost near Lake Wilks

Saturday, 24 May 2025 – 3:24 pm.

A female tourist in her 30s was rescued last night after becoming lost on the Lake Wilks Track in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
The woman lost the track, whilst walking alone, relying solely on her iPhone with online maps for navigation, and wasn’t adequately prepared for an emergency situation.
The alarm was raised at 6.50pm, and search and rescue efforts were coordinated by Tasmania Police, with assistance from Tasmania SES members. The woman was located and safely extracted without injury about 1.45am this morning.
Detective Inspector Steve Jones said the incident was another reminder of the importance of proper planning and preparation when bushwalking in Tasmania’s wilderness.
“While we’re pleased this situation ended safely, it could have easily resulted in serious consequences.
“Tasmania’s wilderness can be unforgiving, and weather conditions can change rapidly, meaning being properly prepared is essential,” he said.
“Technology like smartphones can be useful, but they should never be your only means of navigation.
“We are urging all walkers, especially visitors unfamiliar with the terrain, to research their chosen route thoroughly and always be prepared for any emergency, including delays.
“In this instance, lack of mobile phone charge and no torch contributed to the need for rescue,” said Detective Inspector Jones.
Bushwalkers should follow these essential safety tips:

Be prepared: Ensure you have appropriate equipment, including a map, torch, suitable clothing and footwear for all conditions, a waterproof jacket, adequate food, water, and a first aid kit and carry it with you at all times.
Research your trip: Check the intended trip’s difficulty level and whether it aligns with your fitness and skill level. Always have a route plan, map, and check the expected weather forecast.
Inform others: Let someone know about your planned route and expected return time before embarking on your journey.
Carry communication devices: Always carry a fully charged mobile phone and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). Consider a portable charger to extend your phone’s battery life.
Be mindful of mobile phones: While mobile phones can be helpful, they should not be relied upon as the sole means of communication and navigation during a bushwalking trip.
