Arrests – Crime Series – Alice Springs

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested nine offenders in relation to a crime series in Alice Springs over the weekend.

Around 1:50am Friday, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received information that four males, including one armed with an edged weapon, had unlawfully entered a residence on Bloomfield Street, Gillen.

The 26-year-old male victim woke to find four males inside his residence who demanded car keys from him.

The four offenders fled the scene in two separate dark blue Honda CRVs.

One of the vehicles was later recovered by police and an 18-year-old male was arrested.

The outstanding dark blue Honda CRV was spotted on the scene of an aggravated burglary and robbery on Sunday where five male offenders armed with an edged weapon and metal poles unlawfully entered into a caravan occupied by a family of three on Ilparpa Road after smashing its windows.

The offenders allegedly threatened the family and demanded the car keys before stealing the family’s vehicle as well as cash and wallets. They then fled the scene.

CCTV operators spotted the Honda CRV on Bloomfield Street headed southbound. Police deployed Tyre Deflation Devices and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit was terminated 20km from Alice Springs and a search was undertaken after nine occupants of the vehicle abandoned the vehicle on Larapinta Drive.

Eight offenders were apprehended by Strike Force Viper and K9 units and conveyed to Ntaria Police Station. The ninth offender was located shortly after and also conveyed to Ntaria.

All offenders were later conveyed to Alice Springs.

Call for Information – Suspicious death – Avon Downs District

The Northern Territory Police Force is calling for information in relation to a suspicious death in the Avon Downs District on Sunday.

Around 5:50am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report a female had stopped breathing in the vicinity of Barkly Homestead on the Barkly Highway after a vehicle she was travelling in allegedly hit a kangaroo.

The woman died at the scene and the death is being treated as suspicious.

A 33-year-old male was arrested and conveyed to Tennant Creek where he has been assisting police with enquiries.

Police investigating targeted incident where man sustained gunshot wound

Police are investigating an incident where a man sustained a gunshot wound in Southern Tasmania last night, in what is believed to have been a targeted incident between people known to each other. 
At this stage in the ongoing investigation, police believe a 29-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound at an address in Chigwell.
The injured man then drove to an address in Bridgewater where he sought assistance. He was subsequently transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The vehicle the man was driving has been seized by police for investigation. 
Police investigations are following a specific line of enquiry to locate the people responsible.

Investigation underway into fatal fire at Devonport

Monday, 6 April 2026 – 10:52 am.

An investigation is underway into a fatal fire at Devonport this morning. 
About 5am, emergency services responded to reports of a residence on fire on Gunn Street. 
Tasmania Fire Service crews extinguished the fire, and sadly located a person – believed to be the resident of the property – deceased inside the unit. 
Investigations into the cause of the fire will be conducted today.  
A formal identification process will be conducted, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones of the person involved.

Investigations into Goodwood firearms incident

Investigations are continuing into a firearms incident involving police at Goodwood early Sunday morning in which a man sustained a gunshot wound.
Tasmania Police Southern District Commander Jason Elmer provided an update on the incident on Sunday afternoon.
The 34-year-old man remains in Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious, but stable condition, and is receiving treatment for a single gunshot wound to his chest.
The man sustained the injury about 5.50am Sunday at Rothesay Circle, Goodwood.
Initial investigations are the man was in the front yard of the residence at that time when he advanced on police making threats about being in possession of a firearm.
Police discharged OC spray at the man, and two police officers discharged their firearms.
Tasmania Police Professional Standards is conducting a full investigation in relation to the circumstances of the incident, which will be overseen by the Integrity Commission.
Commander Elmer acknowledged this had been a distressing and traumatic incident for all those involved, with support being provided to the officers involved.
“I have viewed the incident, and they have my full support for their actions this morning,” he said.
“I am incredibly proud of our police officers who turn up to work every single day to do their job and have to deal with extremely confronting situations, like this morning, and are forced to make critical decisions, sometimes in milliseconds.”

Party of five safe after boating incident

Monday, 6 April 2026 – 8:42 am.

Five people, including a nine-year-old boy, were rescued from Port Esperance Bay, at Dover, on Sunday night after their dinghy upturned about 200m from shore.
The party of five spent an anxious 20 minutes in the bay after their small boat was hit by a bow wave and they were tossed into the water, about 7.25pm.
All people on board the dinghy were wearing life jackets and while they were wet, cold and shaken up, there were no serious injuries.
The group raised the alarm by setting off distress flares and issuing a Mayday call on marine radio.
Boat operators nearby, including Tassal workers, responded quickly and were able to locate the people and get them safely back to shore by about 7.50pm.
Once on dry land, officers from Tasmania Police and Ambulance Tasmania were able to provide further assistance, including shelter in warm vehicles.
The group of three men, a woman and a child had earlier enjoyed a boating day trip in the state’s south on a larger vessel, and were being ferried back to shore in the dinghy when they got into trouble.

Arrests – Aggravated Robbery – Casuarina

Five offenders have been arrested in relation to an aggravated robbery in Casuarina last night.

Around 9:45pm,the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received information a 19-year-old male was approached by four males wearing masks who pulled him out of his vehicle, allegedly assaulted him and threatened him before stealing the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Strike Force Trident investigated and recovered the vehicle, identifying that there were six offenders involved.

Five offenders have been arrested including two females aged 16 and 15, two 15-year-old males and a 12-year-old male.

Man dies after West Coast ATV crash

Sunday, 5 April 2026 – 12:01 pm.

Sadly, a man has died following a serious crash involving a side-by-side All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) at Macquarie Heads beach, Strahan, on Saturday morning.
The 81-year-old man from Tasmania’s East Coast was a passenger in the vehicle when police believe it crashed and rolled on the beach, before landing at the water’s edge.
The man was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with critical injuries but sadly, he died early this morning.
Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
A 36-year-old West Coast man who was driving the vehicle sustained serious injuries and remains in the Royal Hobart Hospital in a stable condition.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday about 11.15am after members of the public discovered the ATV partially submerged in the water.
Investigations are continuing.

Firearms incident involving police at Goodwood

A man has sustained a gunshot wound during an incident involving police at Goodwood this morning (5 April).
The man was provided immediate first aid at the scene by police before being transferred to Royal Hobart Hospital by Ambulance Tasmania where he is in a serious but stable condition.
Tasmania Police Southern District Commander Jason Elmer said police initially responded to a call for assistance at a residence in Rothesay Circle, Goodwood, about 4.35am Sunday.
Initial investigations are that about 5.50am the man was outside the house, threatening police.
Commander Elmer said following a confrontation, police discharged their firearms resulting in the man sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest.
His injuries are serious, but believed to be non life-threatening at this stage.
The man was alone at the property at the time of the incident and there were no other injuries.
“This is obviously a serious incident that is now under investigation. It’s an incident that is quite distressing for those parties involved and we are assisting with support to those affected,” Commander Elmer said.
“As is normal process in any serious incident involving police, a full Professional Standards investigation is under way.”
