Two people charged in relation to shoplifting offences in Claremont and Sandy Bay

Wednesday, 13 May 2026 – 2:47 pm.

Glenorchy Police have today arrested a 14-year-old girl and a 26-year-old woman, both from the Claremont area, in relation to two shoplifting matters this month. 
Police will allege that both people were together when they stole property from retail outlets in Claremont and Sandy Bay to a value of approximately $4,500. 
Some of the stolen property has been recovered and seized by police as part of the investigation. 
Both people have been detained to appear before court. 
Inspector Jason Klug of Glenorchy Police said, “Police will continue to actively target this type of offending to reduce property crime and hold offenders accountable.”

The Major Fraud Squad has arrested a 52-year-old male following an extensive investigation into allegations of large-scale theft and deception offences.

Operation Cheyenne was established in December 2025 to investigate allegations the man stole property, including plant and equipment and building materials between August 2021 and June 2025 to improve his properties.

It is alleged that the man stole property, including plant and equipment and building materials to improve his two properties on Old Bynoe Rd, Livingstone with a total loss in the order of $1.33 million.

On Wednesday, 1 April 2026, the Major Fraud Squad executed search warrants with assistance from other members of the Financial Crimes Section and other specialist units, at two separate properties on Old Bynoe Road, Livingstone.

During the searches, police recovered around $123,000 worth of allegedly stolen plant and equipment. Police also identified 32 explosive ordnance items suspected of having military origin, unsafe for public possession including Second World War munitions, hand grenades, rocket components and warheads.

These items were subsequently released to the Australian Defence Forces Northern Territory Joint Explosive Ordnance Support team for secure storage and referral through to the Australian Federal Police.

The 52 year-old male was arrested and charged with:

• 7 x Obtaining property by Deception contrary to section 228 AH Criminal Code Act 1983 (NT)
• 1 x Theft contrary to section 217 Criminal Code Act 1983 (NT)

The Australian Federal Police also charged the man with the following Commonwealth offences:

• One count dishonestly took property belonging to a Commonwealth entity namely military grade munitions and ordnances contrary to section 132.8 (1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
• One count dishonestly retained property belonging to a Commonwealth entity namely military grade munitions and ordnances contrary to section 132.8 (2) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

He appeared at Darwin Local Court on 2 April 2026 and was bailed to appear in court on 20 June 2026.

Major Fraud Squad Detective Sergeant Nicholas George said:

“Fraud is reported by the Australian Institute of Criminology as costing Australians more than $5 Billion per year.

“The resolution of this operation involved collaboration with federal partners and through continued co-operation we will investigate, prosecute, and disrupt anyone who commits Fraud in the Northern Territory”.

On behalf of the Australian Government, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has today announced the shortlisted projects for Round 2 of the Hydrogen Headstart Program, marking a major step forward in scaling Australia’s renewable hydrogen industry.  

The projects selected to progress to the next stage in the application process are some of the most advanced large-scale renewable hydrogen proposals in the country, spanning multiple states and a range of end uses, including ammonia and alternative fuels. 

The Australian Government has revised the amount of funding allocated to the program in the 2026 Federal Budget to $1 billion, and ARENA will now invite shortlisted projects to submit full applications. The full application phase includes a rigorous assessment process and detailed due diligence. Applicants must satisfy program criteria, with only those that meet a high merit threshold being considered for funding. 

ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the level of engagement in Round 2 of Hydrogen Headstart demonstrates that industry remains committed to building a renewable hydrogen sector in Australia.  

“Renewable hydrogen presents Australia with a significant economic and decarbonisation opportunity. Its potential to develop low-emission fuels for aviation and shipping, as well as key inputs for fertiliser could also help improve the nation’s energy resilience in the longer term. 

“Renewable hydrogen is a complex, capital-intensive industry and progress takes time, but it is a critical enabler of industrial decarbonisation, particularly for hard-to-abate sectors. What we’re seeing are expressions of interest that are considered and well aligned to future market demand.”

Announced in the 2023-24 Budget, the Hydrogen Headstart Program aims to catalyse Australia’s hydrogen industry to take advantage of the country’s opportunity to be a global hydrogen leader.  

Round 2 of Hydrogen Headstart builds on ARENA’s existing support of renewable hydrogen, with the Agency having already committed more than $1.2 billion to two projects in Round 1, and over $396 million to 68 renewable hydrogen projects since 2017 through other funding programs. 

Under the Program, projects seeking to produce renewable hydrogen, or derivatives, can apply for a production credit delivered over ten years to bridge the commercial gap between the cost of producing renewable hydrogen and market prices. 

Shortlisted applicants now have until early September 2026 to submit their full application. Following the assessment phase, a recommendation will be made to the Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, for approval on which projects will receive support. For more information on Hydrogen Headstart Round 2, visit the funding page.
