$100,000 in cash seized after arrest

Thursday, 21 May 2026 – 9:22 am.

Five vacuum-sealed plastic bags, each containing $20,000 in cash, have been seized by police during an incident which began with two men allegedly trying to evade police at Bridgewater.
On 13 May about 2pm, detectives from Bridgewater CIB attempted to intercept a vehicle on Scarlett Lane over a traffic matter, but the driver is alleged to have accelerated away, before stopping in McShane Road.
One man remained with the vehicle, while another man who was a front seat passenger is alleged to have fled the scene on foot.
During a subsequent search of the McShane Road area, uniformed officers from Bridgewater Police located the man outside a private residence, where he was safely taken into custody.
Police allege the man had a bag in his possession at the time which contained five, vacuum-sealed plastic bags, each containing bundles of $20,000 in cash.
Police suspect the $100,000 may be connected to the procurement, sale and distribution of illicit drugs in southern Tasmania.
Further investigations resulted in Bridgewater detectives, with the support of officers from Glenorchy CIB and Southern Drugs and Firearms Unit, conducting searches of a Bridgewater property and two hotel rooms in Hobart.
A 50-year-old Bridgewater man faces charges including:• Dealing with proceeds of crime• Wilfully obstruct a police officer• Supplying a controlled drug• Passenger failing to wear a seatbelt.
A 67-year-old Lenah Valley man faces charges including:• Evade police (aggravated)• Resist a police officer• Drive while not the holder of a driver’s licence• Possess a controlled drug.

Strike Team honoured for brave actions at Mallacoota

Thirty-two former and current CFA volunteers who served at Mallacoota during the 2019-20 bushfires have received the Chief Officer’s Unit Citation for Courage, recognising their extraordinary bravery.

The group was honoured during a ceremony on Friday 15 May at the Mt Evelyn Football Netball Club, venerating their actions as members of a Strike Team during one of the most significant days of the Black Summer fires.

On 31 December 2019, the Strike Team was tasked to defend the Local Command Facility at Mallacoota Fire Station, where 18 people had taken refuge with no fire appliance to defend the building.

Just before crews arrived, fire crossed the road between appliances, placing members in immediate danger, with 50-metre-high flames reported just 60-metres away from the facility.

Despite being within their rights to fall back and wait for conditions to ease, the team held their ground, protecting the station, nearby buildings and the people sheltering inside.

Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade member Simon Steele, one of the recipients, said the scale of what was approaching only became clear in the days before the fire hit.

“There was such minimal intel about the fire with all of the fire activity across the state, so we continually monitored and observed the approaching glow,” Simon said.

“On the eve of the fire we were able to triangulate its position as 23 kilometres away and 25 kilometres wide.”

Conditions deteriorated rapidly on the morning of 31 December, with ember rain blanketing the town well before the fire front arrived.

“The strike team drove down the street with sirens activated to alert people of the approaching fire. It was about 9am and pitch black because of the smoke,” Simon said.

“I knew at that moment we were in for a very busy day.”

With crews positioned at the station, others worked to stop house fires spreading through the township.

“My crew and I protected the buildings along Bastion Point Road and spent a lot of time stopping house fires from spreading to adjacent homes,” Simon said.

“There was not a single complaint we just got the job done. My life was in their hands and I would happily trust them to do it all again.”

Simon said the commendation, while unexpected, was an honour to receive.

“We don’t join the fire brigade for recognition, but the acknowledgement of our efforts is certainly appreciated.”

Acting CFA Chief Officer Garry Cook said all 32 recipients displayed unwavering courage.

“These members were faced with confronting conditions and made every effort to protect people and property in Mallacoota at a time of great risk,” Garry said.

“Their actions at Mallacoota reflect the very best of CFA.”

Doorstop – Alice Springs

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: Kumanjayi Little Baby was just five years old and should have had her whole life ahead of her. This wonderful young soul, who I got to speak to her mum, her grandfather, and her grandmother today. She was cherished and loved and they’re going through the worst of devastation, and at this time they’ve asked that they be allowed to go through the Sorry Business with the privacy and dignity and solemnity that it deserves. But they are given a great deal of heart by the fact that the community here in Alice Springs has come together and come together to wrap their arms around this family to hold them. And so it was an opportunity as well to, we laid flowers at the memorial at the camp that has sprung up spontaneously. People leaving messages, people knitting toys in tribute to this wonderful, much loved little girl. And it was also an opportunity to thank the workers and others, volunteers, who just came together in their hundreds to search for Kumanjayi Little Baby during that tragic period. And to whether they were police or emergency service workers, St John’s Ambulance, the local Land Council, people from community organisations, the local council, all an opportunity to say thank you to them. And it was mainly an opportunity just to say to the family, though, that the nation stands with them. They are not alone. Kumanjayi Little Baby is known throughout our nation and indeed throughout the world. This is a young person lost far too early under circumstances that are unbearable. They are trying to bear their way through this with dignity, with respect, and it will remain something that is with them forever.

Funda-rentals is back: New rules, explained

Source: Australian Capital Territory Policing

Consumer Affairs Victoria is relaunching its Funda-rentals campaign for a second year to raise awareness about new rental reforms.

The campaign focuses on changes that strengthen protections for renters while introducing clearer processes for both renters and rental providers.

The most recent rental reforms came into effect on 31 March 2026. They include a simpler, faster standard rental application form and new rules to better protect renter privacy.

The reforms also:

  • ban no-fault evictions
  • increase notice periods for rent increases and notices to vacate from 60 to 90 days
  • ban all types of rental bidding
  • strengthen the minimum standards for rental properties.

These updates build on more than 150 rental reforms since 2020, reflecting a growing rental market. In 2024, around two million Victorians were living in rental properties.

You can contact us if you need advice about your rights or have concerns.
