City to commence street and parkland tree planting program

Source: State of Victoria Local Government 2

The City of Greater Bendigo will commence planting approximately 2,200 advanced trees in local streets and parklands throughout the municipality this May as part of its annual Greening Greater Bendigo tree planting program.

City of Greater Bendigo Parks and Open Space Manager Tyrone Downie said late autumn, and winter is the optimal time to plant the trees.

“This year we will again plant a mix of indigenous, native evergreens and exotic deciduous trees ranging in size from 1.5 metres to over 2.5 metres tall,” Mr Downie said.

“The City will be responsible for all ongoing maintenance of the trees including watering them for the first two years.

“All trees have been carefully selected by the City’s open space team to ensure the most appropriate species for each location are planted, based on local conditions, climate, neighbourhood character and any relevant master plans.

“This season’s planting program has been put together from resident requests, replacements for removed trees, and by identifying streets in need of canopy cover.

“The City is committed to improving the liveability of Bendigo’s urban areas and townships through its Greening Greater Bendigo Strategy and its annual tree planting program.

“Urban trees enhance the appearance of our municipality and its streetscapes. They are also essential for creating a liveable community as they provide shade and cool urban areas, support physical and mental wellbeing, and improve our natural environment and biodiversity.”

Launch boxes packed: final large scale T2D cutterhead craned into place

Source: Australian Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure

The $15.4 billion River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project has reached another major milestone, with the third and final Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead carefully craned into place at the Project’s Central North Precinct in Hilton.

The cutterheads, each weighing more than 300 tonnes, have now been lifted into place for the mega-machines, which will make Australian history as the first road project operating three large-scale TBMs concurrently.

The Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments have each committed $7.7 billion towards the T2D project.

Safely lowered into the 20-metre-deep launch box by a 500-tonne gantry crane, the cutterhead sits at the front of the TBM and rotates to excavate rock and soil, known as spoil, from the tunnel face using cutting teeth and discs.

With the cutterhead now in place, the remaining TBM components will be assembled, before final testing and commissioning ahead of tunnelling beginning in the second half of 2026.

The third TBM will construct the Northern Tunnels by launching from Hilton and excavating 2.2 kilometres towards the project’s Northern Precinct near the Brickworks Marketplace in Torrensville, where it will be turned around before tunnelling back to Hilton.

Once operational, each TBM will operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week, progressing approximately 8-10 metres per day, with up to 20 specialised workers inside at any one time.

Each TBM is approximately 100 metres long and 15 metres in diameter, roughly the height of the Thebarton Theatre or the goal posts at Adelaide Oval.

The use of three TBMs will allow both the Northern and Southern Tunnels to be constructed concurrently, for the project to be delivered by 2031, if not before.

Quotes attributable to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“The T2D Project will transform the way people move through and around Adelaide and progress is now really accelerating on this exciting project.

“This is the city changing infrastructure that is achieved when Labor Governments at state and federal levels can work together to get things done.”

Quotes attributable to SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Joe Szakacs:

“The $15.4 billion T2D Project is not only the largest infrastructure project in South Australian history, but also the first road project in Australia to operate three large-scale TBMs concurrently.

“This historic first highlights the scale of what we are delivering.

“For motorists driving past these sites every day, this milestone is another visible sign that we are moving closer to a non-stop South Road.

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Adelaide Steve Georganas:

“With the final cutterhead craned into place, this milestone marks another step forward on this game-changing infrastructure project.

“These tunnels will take thousands of cars off local roads, making it faster and safer for people travelling through our community.”

Building Sydney’s first electric bus depot at Macquarie Park

Source: Australian Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure

Construction has begun at the site of Sydney’s first purpose-built electric bus depot at Macquarie Park.

The new depot in Sydney’s north will charge and operate 150 cleaner, quieter electric buses and is an important moment for the Minns Labor Government’s phased transition for the state’s 8,000-strong diesel and gas fleet over the next two decades.

Construction of the jointly funded depot is expected to be completed and operational in 2028.

Once open, the depot will employ 160 staff, including drivers, maintenance workers and administration personnel.

The new buses at Macquarie Park will support the existing Ryde and Willoughby depots that were opened in 1953 and 1958 respectively, enhancing service delivery across Sydney’s lower north shore, northwest suburbs, Ryde and Parramatta.

The new depot will have both standard (75-kilowatt) and fast (150-kilowatt) plug-in charging infrastructure, enabling the electric buses to travel up to 300 kilometres on a single charge.

In September last year, Brookvale became the first of Sydney’s 11 bus depots to be fitted out for the electric transformation, with Australia’s first gantry-mounted, fast-charging station installed.

Leichhardt and Kingsgrove are expected to have electric bus charging technology installed later this year.

The NSW Government’s Zero Emissions Bus Program is delivering more than 1,200 new electric buses by 2028.

For Stage 1 of the program, the use of electricity from the grid is supported through purchased renewable energy credits.

The Minns Labor Government’s 2025–26 Budget addressed rising demand for more bus services across Sydney and regional NSW, with an additional $452 million to

increase the number of services and accelerate the rollout of new buses on to the road.

Contractor Fulton Hogan starts work on the Talavera Road site at Macquarie Park this week.

The Australian and NSW governments have each committed $115 million to jointly fund the Zero Emission Buses Tranche 1 Infrastructure – Macquarie Park Depot project.

Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King:

“The Australian Government is pleased to be funding this crucial project in Macquarie Park, ensuring Sydney’s transport infrastructure is ready for the future.

“By transforming this site into a state-of-the-art electric bus depot, we are directly investing in cleaner air, quieter streets and a more sustainable transport network for growing communities.”

Quotes attributable to NSW Minister for Transport John Graham:

“The sight of shovels going into the ground at Macquarie Park is a major step on the path to transitioning our very large NSW bus fleet to the cleaner, quieter, smoother ride of electric buses.

“The buses that charge up here will be a welcome addition for passengers from Parramatta to Ryde and highly bus dependent suburbs across Sydney’s northwest and lower north shore.

“The electric bus transformation is providing welcome local jobs in the construction phase and in the transport sector once this high-tech depot is operational.”

Quotes attributable to NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Marjorie O’Neill:

“This depot will support new technology buses and local jobs, to deliver smoother and quieter trips for passengers across the lower north shore, north-west Sydney, Ryde and Parramatta.

“The multi-billion-dollar program will progressively transition NSW’s 8000-plus diesel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) public transport buses to electric buses over the next two decades.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale:

“Construction starting on this project at Macquarie Park is fantastic news for local jobs and local manufacturing.

“This $230 million investment, in partnership with the NSW Government, is about fostering a new industry of zero-emission technology, creating specialised jobs and transforming how Sydney moves.”

Resmed and ŌURA Partner to Expand Access to Sleep Health Education and Care

Source: Resmed Inc

Oura Members can take action on changes in sleep or breathing patterns through educational resources from Resmed and pathways for accessing care

SAN DIEGO, May 19, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Resmed (NYSE: RMD, ASX: RMD), the leading health technology company focused on sleep, breathing and care delivered in the home, and ŌURA, maker of the world’s leading smart ring, today announced they are partnering to expand access to sleep health education and pathways to care, helping more people sleep better and improve their overall health.

Sleep is increasingly recognized as a key pillar of long-term health, yet it remains widely underprioritized.1 Early signs of poor sleep are often dismissed, creating a gap between what people experience and when they seek support or clinical care.

At the same time, the use of wearable technology to track sleep is on the rise, increasing from 16% of adults in 20252 to 53% in 2026.3 Insights from wearable devices, including Oura Ring, can help people better understand their sleep patterns and encourage them to have informed conversations with their healthcare providers to learn more about potential sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a chronic condition that disrupts breathing during sleep and often goes undiagnosed. In the U.S., an estimated 80% of people with OSA remain undiagnosed and untreated.4 Resmed and Oura are partnering to help close the awareness gap, turning insight into action.

Oura Members who experience a higher number of nighttime breathing disturbances can easily connect to trusted resources from Resmed, including:

  • Educational resources and a sleep assessment to understand more about sleep health.
  • The option to connect with an independent healthcare provider, virtually or in-person, to address their sleep concerns.
  • An informative guide to support discussions with their healthcare provider.

By connecting consumer-generated wellness insights with Resmed’s sleep health resources, Resmed and Oura are helping Oura Members take a more informed next step to better understand their sleep health.

“We’re at an inflection point in how people engage with their sleep health, driven by rising awareness and more accessible technology,” said Dr. Carlos Nunez, chief medical officer at Resmed. “By partnering with ŌURA, we are turning insight into action by guiding people across their sleep health journey and making it easier for them to seek clinical evaluation and care if they have concerns about their sleep.”

“High-quality sleep is one of the strongest foundations for long-term health, yet many people live for years with unrecognized sleep and breathing issues,” said Dr. Ricky Bloomfield, chief medical officer at Oura. “By pairing Oura’s continuous insights into sleep and nighttime breathing with Resmed’s sleep expertise, we’re giving people clearer tools and education to spot when something might be off and to more easily access care so they can better understand and act on changes in their sleep health.”

Resmed’s connection with Oura is designed to reach individuals who may not recognize their sleep issues or engage with the healthcare system, making it easier for people to learn about their sleep health and connect with clinical resources when they need it. The experience is available to users of Oura Ring Gen3 and Oura Ring 4 who have an active Oura Membership in the U.S.

Around 12pm yesterday, local police received further information an unknown male was in community and about to board a flight leaving the island.

The 27-year-old was arrested and later charged with Supply Commercial Quantity of Kava following a further search of his residence.

Council gives green light to open Hargreaves Mall to vehicles

Source: State of Victoria Local Government 2

Council last night adopted the new Bendigo City Centre Action Plan 2026–2029, which includes reopening Hargreaves Street Mall as a one-way, low-speed shared zone from Mitchell Street to Williamson Street.

Opening the shared zone is one of 26 actions in the three-year plan aimed at strengthening the city centre as a vibrant, safe, welcoming, and investment-ready retail and activity destination.

The new plan outlines targeted actions to attract national retailers, high-quality food and beverage operators, and experience-based businesses. It also proposes initiatives such as shared tenancies, shopfront enhancements, short-term lease incentives, and a range of pilot programs to encourage activation and investment in the Mall.

The $500,000 project represents the most efficient, flexible, and cost-effective option. It will deliver a one-way shared lane by mid-September, with minimal disruption to traders and shoppers. The area will operate as a 10 km/h shared zone, improving connectivity between Mitchell Street and Williamson Street.

To transition into the shared zone from Mitchell Street, an existing gently sloped edge will connect the existing road surfaces. Bollards and planters will be arranged in a staggered layout to create a subtle winding path that encourages slow vehicle movement. A clear entry point will also be provided for cyclists travelling from Williamson Street to Hargreaves Street Mall.

Reopening the road is a key initiative to boost activity, increase foot traffic, improve access, and attract new business opportunities, including national brands.

No road excavation is required and existing infrastructure, including street furniture and the stage, can be repositioned. Trees will be retained, while Fun Loong Play Space will be secured with fencing.

The flexible design will also allow bigger events and activations, such as the Moonlight Market, to continue, helping to bring renewed energy and draw interest to the city centre.

While reopening the road is a permanent change, traffic flow, safety, and movement will be reviewed after 12 months to determine whether any improvements are needed.

Mayor Cr Prince said reopening Hargreaves Street Mall had been a long-standing topic of discussion within the community.

“There has been strong community sentiment, especially in recent weeks, showing how much people care about the Mall and the broader city centre succeeding as a key economic and civic hub,” Cr Prince said.

“Reopening the road is not a single fix. It’s part of a broader plan to drive revitalisation and investment, with a clear goal to attract more people, more often, in the city centre.

“This is an opportunity to reposition Hargreaves Street Mall as central Victoria’s flagship destination for shopping, dining, cultural experiences, and entertainment. The area has the scale to attract national brands, premium hospitality, and curated cultural events.

“This is a collaborative effort, with landlords, agents and businesses all playing a role in shaping the city centre’s future. The City can lead this action plan, but everyone needs to be on board for this to succeed.”

The previous Hargreaves Mall Action Plan 2023–2026 laid the groundwork for revitalisation, delivering improvements to the look and feel of the Mall through new infrastructure, public art, ongoing cleaning program and more than 500 events and activations.

The City also facilitates regular meetings with traders and Victoria Police, which will continue.

Search and Rescue Operation – Galiwinku

Source: Northern Territory Police and Fire Services

Around 10pm last night, the Northern Territory Police Force received reports of an overdue party consisting of two adults and two children who had departed Galiwinku by boat and failed to arrive at their intended destination.

NT Police Search and Rescue immediately commenced a coordinated search operation.

During the evening, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) deployed a Challenger jet aircraft to assist with the search; however, the vessel was not located overnight.

Joint coordination between AMSA, coordinating air assets, and NT Police Search and Rescue, coordinating sea assets, continued into the morning

At approximately 10:40am on Tuesday 19 May 2026, the missing party was located safe and well. It was established the vessel had suffered engine issues.

The party was safely returned to Galiwinku.

Assets involved in the search operation included:

  • AMSA Challenger Jet aircraft
  • NT Police aircraft
  • Northern Territory Emergency Service
  • NT Police Cultural Reform Team
  • Australian Border Force vessel Leviathan
  • Australian Defence Force P8-A aircraft
  • Milingimbi Police working alongside the Milingimbi Outstation Progress Resource Association Rangers
  • Galiwinku Police working alongside Marthakal Rangers

Senior Constable Michael Bishop from the NT Police Search and Rescue Section said, “This incident highlights the effectiveness of multi-agency cooperation in achieving a quick resolution to what could have been a disastrous outcome. It is a reminder to all mariners to ensure their vessels are in working order and equipped with the required safety equipment.”
