Public exhibition has opened for the proposed residential and commercial heritage guidelines amendment, developed to help shape how heritage places are managed in the region.
The proposed C300gben amendment provides detailed and practical guidance on how heritage buildings should be cared for, adapted and developed into the future. The Commercial and Residential Heritage Design Guidelines replace the Greater Bendigo Heritage Design Guidelines (2020).
The Commercial Heritage Design Guidelines have been created as a separate document for the first time to address a current gap in commercial guidance for heritage places. It provides advice for heritage shops, offices, and other commercial buildings.
The Residential Heritage Design Guidelines provide guidance for heritage homes and include information about residential architectural styles, including post-war heritage homes.
The amendment seeks to apply Heritage Overlays to seven properties in Bendigo and Golden Square, as recommended by the Golden Square Heritage Study Stage 2 (2022). Letters have been sent to the homeowners and occupiers about the proposed changes.
Two drop-in sessions are taking place this month with City of Greater Bendigo staff available to discuss individual enquiries.

Manager Strategic Planning Anthony Petherbridge said these proposed guidelines support change that is sensitive, practical and in keeping with the region’s important heritage character.
“The Guidelines are intended for property owners and managers, designers and planners to assist with decision-making when planning changes to heritage places,” Mr Petherbridge said.
“At two drop-in sessions, City staff will be available to help with any enquiries regarding the design guidelines for commercial and residential properties. If you are unable to attend the drop-in sessions, please email: [email protected] to arrange for a City staff member to contact you.”
