ACT Policing officers have caught a woman twice overnight for drink driving.

About 10:40pm last night (Saturday, 17 May 2025), officers from Gungahlin Police Station were conducting Random Breath Testing on Gundaroo Drive in Crace.

Police stopped a 34-year-old woman who was subject to a roadside breath test which was positive for alcohol.

The woman was transported to Gunghalin Police Station, where she returned a breath analysis of 0.240. She was issued an immediate suspension notice, suspending her right to drive in the ACT for 90 days.

About 12:40am (Sunday, 18 May 2025), the same officers observed the woman walking in the direction towards her vehicle.

A short time later police saw the vehicle being driven on Gundaroo Drive. Police stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as the same woman from before.

Police subjected the woman to another roadside breath test, which was positive for alcohol. She was taken to City Police Station, where she returned a breath analysis of 0.191.

The 34-year-old woman was arrested by police and will face the ACT Magistrates Court on 16 June 2025. She has been charged with two counts of drink driving and driving with a suspended licence.

Another four drivers were caught drink driving by Gungahlin Police Station officers during the night.

ACT Policing is disappointed to see this on the last day of National Road Safety Week 2025.

More than 110 impaired drivers caught in April

Police have caught 113 impaired drivers following a month of action targeting drink and drug driving in the ACT.

In April, ACT Policing conducted more than 20,500 random breath tests and roadside drug tests.

Impaired driving is one of the fatal five driving behaviours – the major causes of injury and death on our roads.

Among the people caught was a 33-year-old man who was observed running a red light shortly before midnight on 14 April. He was stopped and subjected to a breath analysis at Belconnen Police Station, which returned a result of 0.179.

When he was spoken to by police, the man reportedly said it wasn’t a big deal because he didn’t hit anyone.

An 18-year-old man who told police he had drank a bottle of wine at his house before driving with a passenger in the car recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.149 and a 51-year-old man who hit a parked car in Theodore and returned a result of 0.170 were also among the drivers caught in April.

In Australia, almost one in three recorded fatal collisions involves a driver with alcohol or drugs in their system.

Detective acting Superintendent Mark Steel said it was still disappointing that in 2025, police were having to remind the community not to drive while impaired.

“It is especially disappointing to have to say this during National Road Safety Week. People are continuing to place themselves and others at significant risk,” Det. A/Supt Steel said.

“If you drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs, you significantly increase the risk of causing a collision and seriously injuring or killing yourself or someone else.”

Online reporting expanded to include theft and lost property

Source: ACT Police

ACT Policing’s online reporting portal will see its third expansion with the Canberra community able to report theft and lost property from today.

Since June 2023 when people were able to report property damage and vandalism and then dangerous driving in May 2024, police have now received more than 3600 online reports.

This expanded capability will now allow incidents such as retail theft (e.g. theft of clothes or alcohol from a retail outlet) and personal theft (e.g. theft of tools from the tray of a vehicle or a bike theft) to be reported to ACT Policing via its website. Lost property such as mobile phones or wallets can now also be reported online.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Marisa Paterson MLA said the new expansion offers more choice and convenience for the Canberra community to report crime and other incidents to police.

“The online reporting portal makes it easier for people to report crimes and other matters without having to physically visit a police station or call a hotline, particularly for non-urgent incidents,” Minister Paterson said.

“We know people want options when engaging with police and this builds on the successful roll out of online reporting for other incident types. Canberrans will always be able to call ACT Policing or attend a station, but this expansion provides everyone a further option.“

Importantly, once the report is received via the portal, the same standard of service is applied by ACT Policing with all submissions undergoing the same triage and assessment process as other reporting channels.

ACT Policing Chief Police Officer Scott Lee said online reporting had freed up police resources which allowed officers to focus on significant and time-critical matters by handling non-urgent incidents online.

“The portal has enhanced situational awareness for responding police due to consistent available information from the online report and triage process, also reducing time for officers to complete incident information within the case management system,” Chief Police Officer Lee said.

“I also want to assure the community they will receive the same level of service from ACT Policing, however they choose to report an incident.”

People can report theft incidents that occurred in the ACT online using any digital device if they are over 13 years of age, have a current email address, and phone number. The person reporting online must either be the victim or reporting on behalf of the victim.

Lost property matters can be reported by anyone.

Following submission, a response acknowledging receipt of a report will be sent, followed by an assessment outcome within 48 hours. If a report is accepted, the assessment will include an ACT Policing reference number which can be used when contacting police in relation to an incident.

The reporting excludes the reporting of the items below which can still be reported by calling 131 444, or by attending a local police station.

  • Firearms, ammunition and firearm parts
  • Property stolen during a burglary (Building unlawfully entered/broken into to have the property stolen).
  • Theft of a motor vehicle or vehicle number plates

Additional forms available on the portal include reporting of property damage, dangerous driving, historic sexual assaults, petrol drive offs and Crime Stoppers.
