Police seeking witnesses to man in Belconnen with imitation handgun

ACT Policing is seeking the public’s help following reports of a man who allegedly pointed a handgun at multiple members of the public today.

About 8:30am this morning (Monday, 15 September 2025), police responded to reports of the man walking along Chandler Street in Belconnen with a black handgun.

Police will allege the man pointed the firearm at buildings, cars and several members of the public.

A short time later, officers located and arrested a 43-year-old Belconnen man. The firearm was located on the man and was later confirmed to be replica handgun.

There is no ongoing threat to the community.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, with brown hair and slim build. He was wearing a dark denim jacket, blue jeans, grey jumper and white sneakers.

The man has been charged with act to cause public alarm and unauthorised possession of a prohibited firearm. He is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court later today.

Police would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident around Chandler Street and Swanson Street this morning from 8:30am to 8:40am.

The public is reminded that possessing or manufacturing a firearm, including replicas and gel blasters, is illegal in the ACT and can result in severe penalties, including substantial fines and imprisonment.

Witnesses sought to Kippax Fair ram raid

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a ram raid at Kippax Fair in Holt on Saturday.

At around 6:30am Saturday morning (13 September 2025) police attended the shopping centre and discovered a stolen front loader had been driven into the front windows in an attempt to steal an ATM, causing significant damage.

The large metal bollards in front of the shopping centre prevented the vehicle gaining further access into the building and the attempt to steal the ATM was unsuccessful. The offenders then fled the scene.

Police are now investigating the incident.

Businesses and shopping centres are reminded that ATMs are at times targeted by thieves so security should be as strong as possible to deter and prevent such incidents.

Man arrested for child abuse material

A 36-year-old Moncrieff man has been charged with possessing child abuse material following a search warrant yesterday.

After police received information about the transmission of child abuse material through an internet server, police began an investigation and on Friday 12 September a search warrant was conducted at the man’s residence in Moncrieff.

During the search police allegedly located a mobile phone containing a number of images of child abuse material.

The man, who is a registered child sex offender, was subsequently arrested and will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Saturday 13 September) charged with possessing child abuse material.

Note to media: use of term ‘child abuse material’, not ‘child pornography’

Use of the phrase “child pornography” benefits child sex abusers because it:

Indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and conjures images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Each photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not ‘pornography”.

Man arrested for assaulting police

A 31-year-old man from Gunghalin has been arrested following an incident in Gungahlin yesterday.

At around 8pm Friday 12 September, police were patrolling in Gungahlin when there were approached by members of the public who informed them a man had set off the fire alarm inside the Gungahlin Market Place.

Police located the man, as they were trying to engage with him he has allegedly tried to flee from police before being apprehended.

The man allegedly heavily resisted police, with two officers being bitten during the arrest.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with assaulting a frontline community service provider and obstruct/resist a territory public official.

Traffic disruptions to occur this weekend

ACT Policing is alerting Canberrans of possible traffic disruptions this weekend due to the Wall-to-Wall Ride for Remembrance on Saturday and Camp Quality Classic Cruise and Raiders final on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon (13 September 2025) the annual Wall-to-Wall Ride for Remembrance will travel from Mitchell to Parkes between 3pm and 4pm. The ride commences at EPIC and will progress along the Federal Highway, Northbourne Avenue, Vernon Circle, Commonwealth Avenue, Parliament Drive before taking Kings Avenue to the National Police Memorial.

On Sunday (14 September 2025) the Camp Quality Classic Cruise is set to depart the National Arboretum mid-morning, travelling along Lady Denman Drive, Barry Drive, Belconnen Way, William Hovel Drive, John Gorton Drive, and Cotter Road before finishing at Questacon in Parkes.

A full house at GIO Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the NRL Finals game between the Raiders and Broncos will also see increased traffic in and around Bruce. Drivers are urged to arrive early and to ensure they are parked in designated parking locations. The use of public transport is also encouraged.

Drivers who find themselves in delayed traffic are reminded to obey the directions of police and traffic controllers. If delayed, drivers should not break road rules (including crossing verges, paths or median strips). Disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

If road users encounter traffic disruptions, we ask that they:

  • Always be aware of their surroundings
  • Obey the directions of police – especially at intersections
  • Be patient
  • Don’t drive over median strips or perform illegal U-turns
  • Recognise that the delay will be for a short period only

Dickson man charged with stalking

A 47-year-old Dickson man has been charged with stalking following the execution of a search warrant at his residence yesterday.

Last month, a woman contacted police after a mechanic found what police will allege was a tracking device secreted in her vehicle.

An investigation commenced and yesterday morning (Wednesday, 10 September 2025) a search warrant was executed at a Dickson residence with electronic devices and other items seized during the search.

A 47-year-old man was subsequently arrested and charged with fourteen counts of aggravated stalking and breaching a family violence order.

He is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 11 September 2025).

Warning issued after firearms stolen from Canberra residence

ACT Policing is seeking information and issuing a public warning after modified firearms were stolen from a northside residence last week.

Last Tuesday (2 September 2025), police were called to the residence after reports that a rifle and two modified handguns had been stolen from the property. A review of CCTV indicated a person attended the residence at approximately 4:30pm on the prior Sunday (31 August 2025).

Following investigations, police identified the offender and arrested a 32-year-old man yesterday (Tuesday, 9 September). However, the stolen firearms remain outstanding.

The stolen handguns are highly customised for competition use. Anyone using these firearms is at risk due to the modifications, with a chance of severe injuries occurring if not used correctly.

The man, who was on bail at the time of the incident, will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with burglary, theft, unauthorised possession of firearms, provide false name and two counts of attempt to escape from custody.

Drugs and weapons seized as part of Operation Vitreus

ACT Policing has charged two men and seized drugs and weapons following a series of search warrants across the ACT last week.

Last week (1 – 5 September 2025), ACT Policing executed four search warrants, utilising teams from Criminal Investigations, Proactive Policing and Diversion Team, National Canine, Forensics, Surveillance, Specialist Operations, and Intelligence.

As a result of these activities, drugs seized included:

  • About 1kg of cocaine, with an estimated value of approximately $180,000-$220,000.
  • About 600mL of Benzylpiperazine.
  • About 500g of MDMA, with an estimated value of approximately $15,000.

Police also seized prohibited weapons, steroids and other drug paraphernalia.

Two arrests were made, with a 43-year-old man arrested at an address in Casey last Tuesday (2 September 2025) for drug trafficking and weapons offences.

On Thursday (4 September 2025), a 26-year-old man was arrested at an address in the City, charged with drug trafficking and prohibited weapons offences.

The two men will face court at a later date.

Traffic Operation – Darwin

Territory Road Policing conducted extensive traffic patrols across Darwin and surrounding suburbs over the weekend.

Darwin Traffic Operations intercepted a total of 17 drivers, issuing eight infringements for various offences including speeding and unregistered motor vehicles. A further six cautions were issued.

Two random breath testing (RBT) stations were set up in Darwin and Palmerston, where 165 drivers were tested. Four returned medium-range readings, while one driver returned a low-range reading.

During one of the RBTs, a taxi driver who was on duty and carrying a passenger returned a medium range breath test.

On Sunday morning, police detected a driver travelling at 140km in a 100km zone along Tiger Brennan Drive. The man was arrested after returning a positive roadside breath test and later returned a high range result of 0.235% at the Palmerston Watch House, almost five times the legal limit. The vehicle was also unregistered.

Sergeant Cameron Bellis said, “While most motorists displayed responsible driver behaviour, a disappointing few, continued to make decisions that put their own life and the lives of others sharing the roads at risk.

“As a result of these offences, multiple people are now facing court and are likely to receive significant licence disqualifications.

Acting Senior Sergeant Aaron Evans said, “Territory Road Policing officers will continue to target the Fatal Five, and if you choose to drink and drive, you will face the consequences.”
