Five family violence arrests overnight

ACT Policing arrested five Canberrans yesterday with various family violence offences, including assault, confinement and property damage.

In one incident, a 33-year-old Reid man was charged with aggravated common assault occasioning actual bodily harm after allegedly striking his ex-partner in the face.

Also, a 53-year-old Rivett man has been charged with aggravated common assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated common assault and forcible confinement. Police will allege the man threw a bucket of water at his wife, pushed her from behind causing the woman to fall and threatening to lock her in a chicken cage in their backyard.

A 36-year-old Palmerston man was charged after allegedly strangling his partner.

In the other two incidents, a 30-year-old Banks woman and a 31-year-old Chisolm man were charged after allegedly assaulting their partners. The man was also charged with property damage.

All offenders are expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday, 25 August 2025).

Police seeking witnesses to City bar sexual assault

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an alleged sexual assault that occurred in a bar on Genge Street earlier this month.

About 12.45am on Saturday 9 August (2025), officers the Territory Targeting Team were conducting patrols on Bunda Street when they were flagged down by security staff from a licenced premises on Genge Street.

The security reported two males had been removed from the bar after allegedly making repeated unwanted advances and inappropriately touching female patrons.

A short time later, officers identified the two males, spoke with them and obtained their details, before they were released pending further enquiries.

The men are described as South Asian in appearance with one wearing a yellow jumper and the other wearing a white jumper at the time of the incidents.

Police are urging any victims of sexual assault, including anyone who is aware of intimate images being shared without the subject’s consent, to report these criminal activities.

Man charged with drug trafficking following fail to stop for police

A 33-year-old man will face court today for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking after he was found in a stolen motor vehicle this morning.

About 7am this morning (Friday, 22 August 2025), officers from City Police Station were conducting patrols in Acton when they observed a white Fiat 500 driving on a bicycle path.

A vehicle check indicated that the Fiat was reported stolen.

Officers activated their lights and sirens and the vehicle failed to stop.

A short time later, police lost sight of the man when he exited the Fiat and entered the driver’s seat of a white Mazda 3.

About 7:30am, police saw the man walking across Edinburgh Avenue onto Phillip Law Street. Upon sighting police, the man ran into a parking complex. Police located him soon after and he subsequently resisted his arrest.

Police observed he was no longer in possession of a black backpack he was carrying earlier. About 8am officers located the backpack and conducted a search of the bag seizing:

  • 3x car keys
  • A knife
  • A screwdriver
  • A balaclava
  • Two torches
  • Approximately $2,355 of cash
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Prescription drugs
  • 10.5 grams of white powder suspected to be cocaine
  • 21 grams of white granules suspected to be heroin
  • 0.1grams of pink powder suspected to be ketamine
  • 34.2 grams of crystalline rock suspected to be methamphetamine
  • 15ml of clear liquid suspected to be butanediol

The man – who was subject to bail conditions at the time of his arrest – was charged with failing to stop for police, drive motor vehicle without consent, resist arrest, drug trafficking and going equipped for theft.

He is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court today. Enquiries are continuing with further charges expected.

Protest activity expected on Sunday

ACT Policing is aware of planned protest activity in the City and Parliament Precinct that will occur on Sunday.

A planned protest march is expected from noon on Sunday (24 August 2025), beginning in the City before moving along London Circuit, then Commonwealth Avenue Bridge and will finish at Parliament House.

Minor traffic disruptions may occur as the march moves from the City to Parliament House. Drivers are asked to consider their route if they do not want to be delayed when driving nearby.

ACT Policing supports the right of people to peacefully protest, however the disruption of business activity or other criminal activity will not be tolerated.

Traffic disruption updates will be provided when required via ACT Policing social media accounts.

Man charged following inner south pursuit

A 42-year-old Watson man has been charged with multiple driving offences following a police pursuit through inner south suburbs yesterday.

About 11:30am yesterday (Thursday, 21 August 2025) police conducting patrols on John Gorton Drive observed an unregistered grey Mazda 6.

Further checks revealed the owner of the Mazda had a suspended licence and was subject to an arrest warrant.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver allegedly accelerated through a red light to evade police.

The driver allegedly continued to drive in a dangerous manner, driving through red lights and on the wrong side of the road on numerous occasions, placing other road users at significant risk.

Police engaged and disengaged in the pursuit of the vehicle as it drove through inner south suburbs.

During the pursuit, the vehicle’s two front tyres deflated, and the driver continued to drive on the rims.

At about 11:55am, the driver lost control and collided with a timber bollard in Yarralumla.

Police arrested the driver following a short struggle, before he was transported to the ACT Watch House. He subsequently tested positive to the presence of methamphetamine during an oral fluid test.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday, 22 August 2025) charged with aggravated dangerous driving, drive while licence suspended, use suspended vehicle and breach of a treatment order. He was also subject to the arrest warrant for other matters.

Woman charged with family violence offences

A 23-year-old NSW woman has been charged after allegedly assaulting her partner during an altercation at a Canberra hotel.

About 3:30am this morning (Thursday, 21 August 2025), police attended a hotel room in Forrest after the woman’s partner called police.

The woman allegedly punched her partner in the head and threw an empty glass bottle at him.

The woman was arrested by police, and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, and possessing an offensive weapon with intent. She is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court today.

Police seeking witnesses after Ainslie building fire

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a suspicious fire that occurred at a building in Ainslie early yesterday morning.

About 4:30am on Tuesday (19 August 2025), police attended a building fire at Wakefield Gardens in Ainslie.

ACT Fire & Rescue were already in attendance and extinguished the fire.

Following an examination of the scene, police suspect that the fire was deliberately lit at around 1:30am that morning.

To assist with the investigation, police are seeking any witnesses, CCTV or dash-cam footage in the area around the Ainslie shops and Wakefield Gardens between midnight and 4:30am on Tuesday, 19 August 2025.

ACT Policing is seeking to identify a man and woman following an alleged shoplifting incident at a Gungahlin retail store in July.

Between 4:30pm and 5pm on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, a man and a woman entered the retail store where they are alleged to have taken several items with an estimated value of more than $1,200.

The woman is described as Caucasian in appearance in her early 40s with short red/brown hair. She was wearing a red jumper, black tights and pink joggers and carrying a large black handbag.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance in his late 40s wearing a black jumper, black tracksuit pants, red joggers and a navy baseball cap.

Following enquiries, police are now seeking the public’s assistance to identify the man and woman.

Three arrested for family violence offences overnight

Three people will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday 1 September) after being arrested by police for separate family violence offences overnight.

At around 8:30pm last night (Sunday 31 August) police were called to a residence in Bonner following reports of a disturbance. Police located a man who had allegedly been cut with a knife receiving a wound to his hand. A 31-year-old woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident police attended a residence in Dunlop yesterday (Sunday 31 August) following reports that a 23-year-old man had allegedly caused damage to the property and assaulted a family member. The man, who was subject to a good behaviour order, was arrested and charged with aggravated common assault, and damaging property.

Police also arrested a 26-year-old man yesterday after he allegedly assaulted a woman, threw items and kicked a door causing damage to the property they were in. Police located the man later that night hiding under a bed in a house in Ngunnawal. He was arrested and charged with aggravated common assault and property damage.

Police seeking information on Watson incident

Police are seeking information regarding an incident that took place in Watson last Wednesday afternoon.

Officers are looking to confirm the movements of a woman who was in the vicinity of the Watson shops. The woman has blonde hair and was wearing blue jeans, white and black shoes and a distinctive brown jacket.

Anyone who witnessed the woman or has dashcam footage of her around the Watson shops and surrounding areas between 4pm and 6pm last Wednesday (20 August 2025) is urged to contact police.
