AAD calls for public comment on draft Initial Environmental Evaluation: Australian Antarctic Program Aviation Operations 2025-2030

Source: Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission

The Australian Government is committed to leading the way in Antarctic environmental protection. We strive to continuously improve our environmental stewardship and minimise the environmental impacts of our operations. As such, and in accordance with our international obligations under the Antarctic Treaty system, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is assessing the environmental impacts of the Australian Antarctic Program’s aviation operations on the Antarctic environment (areas south of 60°S).

The AAD has prepared a draft Initial Environmental Evaluation (IEE): Australian Antarctic Program Aviation Operations 2025-2030.
This IEE considers the potential environmental impacts of all Australian flights in the Antarctic Treaty area in support of the Australian Antarctic Program, for the coming five years. This includes intracontinental and intercontinental airplane flights, helicopters, operation of the Wilkins ice runway, airdrops and some remotely-piloted aircraft activities.
The AAD invites members of the public to submit comments on the draft IEE document. Comments should focus on potential environmental impacts of the proposed activities (south of 60°S) and/or suggest additional, specific ways to reduce the environmental impacts of the proposed activities.
Please note that this environmental assessment process is unrelated to the recently released Approach to Market for the provision of Antarctic Aviation Services.
The closing date for public comment is 5:00pm AEST on 13 June, 2025.
Please submit comments and/or questions on this draft IEE to the AAD’s Antarctic and Environmental Regulation Section via email: eia@aad.gov.au

Have you lodged your SAR?

Source: New places to play in Gungahlin

If you registered your SMSF prior to the 2024 income year and you have appointed a tax agent, your SAR may have been due on 15 May 2025.

If you haven’t contacted your tax agent and given them the information they need to lodge your 2024 SAR, then we recommend you contact them immediately as your return might be overdue.

Not all SMSFs have the same lodgment due date, so contact your tax agent to find out which due date applies to your SMSF. Failure to lodge by the due date can result in penalties and the loss of your SMSFs tax concessions. If you fail to lodge your SAR on time compliance actions may apply.

If your SAR is more than two weeks overdue, and you haven’t contacted us, we may change the compliance status of your SMSF on Super Fund Lookup to Regulation details removed. This status will remain until any overdue lodgments are brought up to date.

Davenport incident inquiry

Source: New South Wales – News

An internal inquiry into a complaint arising from an incident at Davenport near Port Augusta in November 2024 is almost complete.

The complaint related to two allegations that police used excessive force and one allegation about the use of unprofessional language.

As part of the inquiry, the Body Worn footage of all officers present at the incident was reviewed in its entirety in order to assess the full set of circumstances, in context.

The police officer captured in public footage of the incident was also interviewed in relation to their actions.  The officer has since resigned from SAPOL to pursue alternative employment, however that decision was unrelated to the incident or this inquiry.

Subsequently, the two allegations of excessive force were not substantiated, however the allegation about the use of unprofessional language was substantiated.  Had the police officer involved not resigned from SAPOL, it is likely they would have been subject to management resolution under the Police Complaints and Discipline Act.

This inquiry is being overseen by the Office of Public Integrity.

As this incident is the subject of a complaint, the Police Complaints and Discipline Act would ordinarily prohibit the disclosure or publication of information in connection with it.

However, the Police Commissioner has determined to authorise both the disclosure and publication of the above information in relation to this complaint as it is in the public interest to do so.

Warning for the west and southwest ahead of windy weather

CFA is urging people in the west and south west of the state to be careful this Sunday, 25 May, with fire risk expected to be elevated.

CFA is urging people in the west and south west of the state to be careful this Sunday, 25 May, with fire risk expected to be elevated.

Despite cooler conditions across Victoria, there are strong winds forecast for the west and south west on Sunday into Monday, which will put the area into high fire danger conditions we aren’t used to seeing this time of year.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer for the West region, Graeme Armstrong, said the wind combined with the ongoing levels of dryness means any fires that start are likely to spread quickly.

“We are asking people to remain vigilant and not become complacent just because we’re not in summer anymore,” Graeme said.

“The impact and damage of an escaped fire on local communities and emergency services can be devastating.

“Whether that involves unnecessary callouts to a private burn-off, a campfire or outdoor cooking, we urge you to remain vigilant, reconsider your plans and ensure your set up is safe and adheres to the conditions.”

Since 1 April to 20 May, CFA has responded to 178 escaped burn-offs across the state.

“Escaped burn-offs continue to cause significant concern and great risk to our communities,” Graeme said.

“I urge landowners to help reduce unnecessary callouts, by registering their burn-offs online.

“This helps prevent false alarms which divert resources from other emergencies.”

CFA recently extended the Fire Danger Period in the far northeast of the state for Towong Shire Council until 23 June 2025.

While the rest of the state is now out of fire restrictions, CFA still urges extreme caution when burning off.

“The lack of rainfall and dry vegetation across many parts of the state is a great concern for firefighters this time of the year,” Graeme said.

“The community needs to play their part in helping us protect lives and property all year round.”

Northside birth centre feasibility study released

As part of ACT Government’s ‘One Government, One Voice’ program, we are transitioning this website across to our . You can access everything you need through this website while it’s happening.

Released 23/05/2025

The ACT Government has today released a feasibility study examining options for the delivery of a new birth centre on Canberra’s northside.

This work is being undertaken as part of developing the new more than $1 billion northside hospital.

The ACT Health Directorate commissioned a detailed study to assess the feasibility of establishing a co-designed standalone birth centre on the northside hospital campus and/or a freestanding birth centre in the community.

Conducted by HealthConsult, with input from a working group of subject-matter experts, the study considered stakeholder feedback and data on birth trends in the ACT, as well as current evidence on birth centre models.

The study has recommended a standalone birth centre adjacent to the new northside hospital as the preferred model, offering a home-like environment for low-risk pregnancies while ensuring safe access to hospital facilities when required.

The Northside Birth Centre Feasibility Study 2024 can be found here: ACT Birth Centre Feasibility Study report – Open Government Information.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the ACT Government is committed to ensuring high-quality maternity services that provide choice and meet the needs of women and pregnant people and their families.

“This study reinforces the benefits of birth centres in delivering positive birthing outcomes with lower medical intervention rates,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“This project presents a unique opportunity to expand midwifery-led care and support culturally safe birthing practices, including Birthing with Country initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

“The recommended model would provide the home-like setting that many expectant parents and midwives have advocated for, while also enabling quick, safe and dignified access to the new hospital if required.

“A standalone birth centre will be a valuable addition to public maternity care in the ACT, offering a low-intervention and midwife-led environment.”

The feasibility study involved extensive consultation with community members, midwives, other health professionals and Aboriginal Elders. It found strong support for a facility that provides more autonomy for midwives and greater choice for families.

The feasibility study confirmed that a standalone birth centre on the campus would deliver benefits such as continuity of care birthing experience, workforce satisfaction, and cultural appropriateness.

“I have endorsed the feasibility study recommendation in principle and asked Infrastructure Canberra to develop a co-design process to ensure the next steps are taken in consultation with stakeholders, including midwives, consumers and birth centre advocates,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“The report provides a solid foundation for a design process to ensure the new birth centres supports culturally safe, trauma-informed care that incorporates principles of Birthing with Country, including space for family, traditional practices and connection to Country.”

The new birth centre will support the ACT’s Maternity in Focus plan by expanding access to midwifery-led continuity of care.

“Midwifery-led continuity of care delivers positive outcomes for both mothers and babies. This dedicated space will allow our highly skilled midwives to provide woman- and person-centred care that truly reflects the needs of our diverse community,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“This commitment ensures that Canberra families will have access to a safe, supported and culturally appropriate birth experience for generations to come.”

Planning for the new northside hospital and the standalone birth centre is continuing, with construction on the northside hospital to commence in this term of Government.  For more information visit: New northside hospital project – Built for CBR.
