Arrest – Theft and stolen motor vehicle – Palmerston

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested a 40-year-old male in relation to multiple thefts and a stolen motor vehicle incident this morning in Palmerston.

Around 6:30am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre (JESCC) received reports that a till was missing from a cash register at supermarket on Temple Terrace. A four-year-old child was in the back seat at the time, before the offender reversed out of the driveway and stalled the vehicle.

The child’s father chased the vehicle and was able to enter it and apprehend the offender before contacting police.

Police attended and arrested the 40-year-old offender, who was found to be in possession of items stolen from the supermarket in the previous incident.

CFA Board statement

Source: Victoria Country Fire Authority

In the midst of a fire emergency, it is acknowledged that the focus must be on community and supporting our volunteers and staff to continue doing what they do best in protecting Victorian communities.

However, in response to recent commentary regarding CFA funding and preparedness, the CFA disputes claims that funding to CFA has been cut and our volunteers and brigades are not prepared for the current fire season.

The CFA budget has in fact increased year on year since Fire Service Reform in 2020, including an additional $20.3million this financial year. In addition, on advice from the Chief Officer, the Board sought from Government additional funds to heighten readiness and community preparedness in the face of this challenging fire season. This request was met with an additional $11.6million of supplementary funding for Strategic Bulk Water Supply and a statewide community engagement and awareness campaign; “Get Fire Ready”.

To support our frontline volunteers, we continue to prioritise investment in new and replacement fire stations, fire trucks, and protective equipment, whilst continuing to advocate and work with Government to secure more investment into fleet and equipment.

Right now, the work continues to stand by our volunteers and staff, and with those communities that are affected.

He will appear in court at a later date.

He was charged with evade police (aggravated circumstances), disqualified driving, riding a motorcycle or quad bike without wearing a helmet, and using an unregistered motor vehicle.
A 32-year-old Devonport woman attempted to avoid police by turning off before a random breath test site and pulling into a nearby bottle shop. She was charged and will appear in court at a later date.

Sunday, 11 January
A 47-year-old Devonport man evaded police on an electric bike on Gunn Street, Devonport. He was located shortly after and arrested for evade police (aggravated circumstances).
Acting Inspector Luke Negri said police also detected 18 drug-driving offences during the same period.
“Every one of these drivers posed a serious risk to the community,” he said.
“If you choose to drive while affected by alcohol or illicit drugs, or attempt to evade police, you are making a deliberate and intentional decision to put lives at risk.”
“We will continue to actively target this behaviour, intercept offenders, remove vehicles from the road, and hold people accountable for their actions. The message is simple – if you break the law, expect to be caught.”
“We encourage the public to report dangerous driving and traffic offences to police on 131 444, or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.”

ACT Government launches new grants program to broaden support for local climate leadership

Source: Government of Australia Capital Territory

Released 12/01/2026

The ACT Government has launched the new Communities Climate Action Grants Program to empower local groups to take practical, community-led action on climate change.

A total of $300,000 has been committed over two years to fund projects of up to $30,000, supporting initiatives that reduce emissions and help communities adapt to climate impacts.

The grants are open to wide range of charitable and not-for-profit organisations, including schools; social, sporting and recreational groups; arts organisations; and cultural groups.

Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water Suzanne Orr said the new grants program recognises the critical role community organisations play in driving meaningful climate action across the Territory.

“Canberrans are already leading the way on climate action, and the new grants will help bring their ideas, energy and local knowledge to life,” Minister Orr said.

“By supporting grassroots initiatives, we can reduce emissions, build resilience, support adaptation and help Canberrans prepare for the impacts of a changing climate.

“Whether it’s helping people save energy, reduce waste, travel more sustainably or stay safe during heatwaves and extreme weather, these grants will support actions that make a real difference in everyday lives.

“We want to see projects that are practical, affordable and led by the community, for the community. Initiatives that tackle key sources of emissions like transport, or help communities become climate ready, will be strongly considered.”

Eligible projects may include workshops on sustainable travel or energy-saving behaviours, repair and composting demonstrations, education on switching from gas to electric appliances, or initiatives that improve community preparedness, such as installing shade in shared spaces, improving air filtration, or developing local emergency response plans.

“This new program builds on what worked well with the now-concluded Community Zero Emissions Grants, which focused solely on reducing emissions, and expands our approach to meet future climate challenges,” said Minister Orr.

“It allows us to fund more projects, reach more communities, and support actions that deliver both emissions reductions and climate resilience, including adaptation initiatives to make Canberra climate-ready.”

Applications for the first round of the Communities Climate Action Grants close on Sunday 15 March 2026.

For more information, including eligibility and application details, visit the Everyday Climate Choices website.

Critical minerals the focus of G7+ ministers meetings in the US

Source: Australian Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry

Today I will travel to the United States for a series of meetings with international counterparts about critical minerals and the global economy.

This is all about making Australian workers and businesses big beneficiaries of the big shifts that are shaping the global economy.

The world needs critical minerals, Australia has plenty of them, and that’s where we see a big opportunity.

Everyone benefits from stronger and more diverse critical minerals supply chains, but especially Australia, and that’s what this work is all about.

Whether it’s our resources or renewable energy, our skills or stability, Australia has exactly what the world needs, when the world needs it, and that’s well understood by our closest counterparts.

I’ll join finance ministers from all G7 countries as well as India, Mexico and the Republic of Korea for a series of strategic discussions about strengthening critical minerals supply chains.

While in Washington DC, I’ll have bilateral meetings with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue the Hon François‑Philippe Champagne.

In these meetings, my focus will be on showcasing Australia’s strengths as an investment destination, promoting resilience in global markets and sharing insights on the global economic outlook.

As part of this, I’ll update my international colleagues on Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, under development by Minister for Resources Madeleine King, which is all about boosting Australia’s critical minerals sector and strengthening supply chains for our international partners.

In the face of growing global uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical tensions, this is a critical time to confer with counterparts.

Collaborating on critical minerals will help to make our economies and our supply chains stronger and more resilient and make our people big beneficiaries of global churn and change.
