ACT Policing officers served more than 200 court orders and documents last weekend to ensure people subject to court ordered restrictions are aware of and abide by those restrictions.

On Saturday and Sunday (14-15 December 2024) officers attached the ACT Policing’s Service and Process Team served:

  • 70 personal protection orders
  • 54 family violence orders
  • Five workplace protection orders
  • Four interstate orders
  • 69 subpoenas
  • Two summons

A protection order is an order of the court setting conditions that a person must abide by. These conditions can prevent the person from contacting or approaching, causing or threatening to cause personal injury, and prohibits them from being harassing, intimidating or behaving in an offensive manner towards another person.

Orders can also exclude a person from a home or workplace or ensure property is returned. In urgent situations, an interim (temporary) family violence order may be granted by a Magistrate on the same day the application is lodged.

In the ACT, all court orders must be served by police and they must be served in-person. Last financial year, almost 1800 personal protection and family violence orders were served.

If a respondent is actively avoiding police and the service of documents, ACT Policing does not have any additional powers or other lawful means to serve the order.

The efforts to serve court orders by ACT Policing are substantial, with most orders needing multiple attempts to locate the respondent over varying lengths of time. In some cases, orders may be served quickly at the first attempt and in other cases a dozen or more attempts are required.

ACT Policing has released footage following a serious incident that occurred earlier this year, during which a police officer narrowly missed being shot by a hunting arrow.

About 1.45pm on Saturday, 17 February 2024, police were requested to attend a 49-year-old man’s residence in Symonston.

While police were attempting to speak with the man, his behaviour became erratic and he shot a hunting arrow using a compound bow towards police, narrowly missing an officer.

The officer who was attempting to engage with the offender was struck by glass fragments when the arrow was shot at him.

A short time later, specialist resources were deployed and arrived at the residence.

Following their arrival, the man shot a second arrow towards police.

Specialist resources successfully negotiated with the man who was apprehended without further incident.

The man was subsequently charged with using an offensive weapon in an act endangering life, and offences relating to previous incidents including breaching a family violence order and failing to appear in court.

The court proceedings were finalised last week, with the man sentenced to 22 months in prison following this incident.

Officer in Charge of Woden Police Station, Detective Inspector Donna Hofmeier said this footage highlights the risks that ACT Policing officers face on a daily basis.

“Police are here to keep the community safe, and there is no place for violence or abuse towards officers,” Detective Inspector Hofmeier said.

“In this incident, an officer’s life was put at risk in an extremely dangerous act. Police went to that home to ensure the safety of the man and found themselves at grave risk.

“Every officer should have the right to come to work and go home safely.

“I am pleased no-one was seriously injured and that the man was safely taken into custody and given the health support he required.”
