ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an assault in the city earlier this month.

About 3:30am on Saturday 5 July (2025), police responded to reports a man had been assaulted outside a licenced venue on Hobart Place.

The man allegedly got into an altercation with another man when he was assaulted and pushed to the ground. He received head injuries and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The other man is described as Caucasian in appearance with a dark blonde or light brown mullet and was wearing a blue polo shirt at the time of the incident.

Police are seeking to identify anyone else who participated in the alleged assault or witnesses who have not yet spoken to police.

Charges following multiple thefts

A 27-year-old person from Phillip will face the ACT Magistrates Court after allegedly stealing items from a supermarket they were banned from.

Between June and July, police allege the person entered several stores and stole items, contravening a workplace protection order and bail conditions.

Yesterday (28 July 2025), police were conducting patrols in Mawson when a staff member told officers the person had recently left the store.

They were located nearby and arrested. They will face court today, charged with ten counts of theft and nine counts of breaching a workplace protection order.

Man caught drink driving following collision

A 34-year-old Queanbeyan man has been charged with drink driving after hitting traffic lights on Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick last night.

About 11:30pm (Monday 28 July 2025), ACT Policing received reports of a single vehicle collision at the intersection of Newcastle Street and Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick.

Police attended and witnesses reported that the driver had fled the scene on foot. Officers located the man on Geraldton Crescent a short time later where he failed to provide a roadside breath test.

He was arrested and taken to City Police Station where he provided a breath analysis of 0.137. The man – who was the holder of an international drivers’ licence – was subject to a breath alcohol limit of 0.000.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court in September, charged with drink driving, fail roadside screening test, and using a vehicle with suspended registration.

Detective acting Inspector Sean Evans said that it’s extremely disappointing to see people still thinking it’s ok to drink and drive.

“As we come into August, ACT Policing will be targeting impaired driving – and I’m asking the community to help us by calling out those dangerous behaviours,” Det. A/Insp. Evans said.

Two people arrested for false barcode scam

A 44-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, both from NSW, have been charged after allegedly using fake barcodes at a retail store.

At about 10am on Saturday (26 July 2025), police allege the woman entered a store in Gungahlin and stuck printed barcode stickers on a number of items. The barcodes scan items at lower prices than were marked by the store.

The woman then allegedly scanned the items at the incorrect price, paid for them and attempted to leave.

Staff identified the woman, who had been banned from the store, and stopped her from leaving.

Officers attended and placed the woman under arrest. During the search of the woman’s vehicle, police located a number of other items that were allegedly used to make false barcodes.

The woman was charged with theft, joint commission obtain financial advantage by deception and trespassing.

A 37-year-old man who was in the vehicle was also arrested and charged with joint commission attempt to obtain financial advantage by deception.

They are both due to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday 28 July).

Two men charged for making nuisance Triple Zero calls

Two men have been charged after making multiple non-emergency Triple Zero calls in two separate incidents on Sunday.

Between about 5:45am and 6:30am yesterday (Sunday 27 July 2025), a 79-year-old Narrabundah man made nine calls to the Triple Zero police emergency line.

The man did not request police assistance and allegedly was verbally aggressive during the calls, swearing at the operators.

About 8am, police attended the man’s residence and placed him under arrest.

In a separate incident, a 30-year-old Ainslie man has also been charged after calling Triple Zero for a non-emergency.

At about 5:45pm yesterday (Sunday 27 July), the man called the Triple Zero police emergency line to report a matter that was not an emergency.

He allegedly proceeded to call the emergency line six more times in an hour. About 7:30pm, police attended the man’s residence, and placed him under arrest.

The two men will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday 28 July 2025) charged with making vexatious calls to an emergency service number.

Firearms, weapons and drugs seized

Police arrested a 34-year-old man from Macquarie yesterday following the discovery of firearms, weapons and drugs in a vehicle in Casey.

At about 3:15am on Sunday (27 July 2025), police patrolling in Casey observed a spray-painted black Mitsubishi Lancer at a service station.

Checks revealed the driver of the vehicle had a suspended licence. He was arrested and when police searched the vehicle, officers located two firearms in a hidden compartment.

A further search uncovered ammunition, prohibited knives, machetes, an axe, and suspected illicit drugs.

The 34-year-old man was charged with three counts of possessing ammunition, two counts of possessing a prohibited firearm, and driving with a suspended licence. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday 28 July).

Man arrested for impersonating police and attempted burglary

ACT Policing has charged a 29 year-old man from Rivett with 11 offences after an attempted burglary and impersonating police.

At about 8:20am on Saturday 26 July police received a report of a man attempting to gain access to a residence in Rivett.

Police allege the man told the occupier of the residence he was a Detective and when the resident asked the man to produce identification he failed to do so. It is then alleged the man removed a metal hatchet from his pocket and tried to open the front door.

At about 8:40am police from Woden Police Station located the man walking away from the incident. The man resisted police and after a short foot pursuit was arrested.

Police searched the man and located a number of bladed weapons, items that police suspect were associated with committing burglaries and suspected stolen property. He was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House.

The man, who was on bail at the time of the offence, was charged with 11 offences including obstruct/resist territory public official, possess/use a prohibited weapon, going equipped for theft, attempted aggravated burglary and falsely represent self as a territory public official.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow, Monday 28 July.

Man charged with sexual assault

A 26-year-old man is due to face court today (Saturday 26 July) charged with sexual assault.

On Tuesday 22 July a woman reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted by her flat mate on Friday 18 July 2025.

Following an investigation, police conducted a search warrant at the man’s residence yesterday (Friday 25 July) and arrested the man.

He has been charged with sexual intercourse without consent, common assault, act of indecency without consent and chokes, suffocates, strangles another person.

Police are urging any victims of sexual assault, including anyone who is aware of intimate images being shared without the subject’s consent, to report these criminal activities.

You can also submit an online report for historical sexual assault for incidents that occurred more than six months ago.

Two men to face court for drink driving

Police have arrested and charged two men overnight for drink driving and other road related offences.

At about 12am Saturday 26 July, police were driving along Drakeford Drive in Kambah when they observed a blue coloured Mitsubishi Lancer allegedly speeding at 128km/hr in an 80km/hr speed zone.

Police stopped the vehicle and conducted a roadside breath test on the driver which returned a positive result. He was transported to Tuggeranong Police Station where he returned a breath analysis of 0.117.

The 48-year old man from Harrison was arrested and charged with speeding and drink driving.

In a separate incident at around 1am (Saturday 26 July) police stopped a blue Mitsubishi Triton on Gungahlin Drive in Gungahlin. The driver was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned a positive result. Police checks revealed the driver also had a suspended licence and was driving an unregistered vehicle.

The 23 year-old man from Harrison was taken to Gungahlin Police Station to undergo a breath analysis test which returned a result of 0.147. He was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House and charged with drink driving, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Both drivers were issued an immediate suspension notice, suspending their right to drive in the ACT for 90 days and arrested.

They will face the ACT Magistrates Court today.

Police continue to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding and driving while impaired.

“All road users have a responsibility to keep our roads safe.  If you are going to drink alcohol, then don’t drive. You are putting the lives of other road users and your own life at risk,” Officer in Charge of Tuggeranong Police Station Detective Acting Inspector Troy Gordon said.

“Police will continue to target impaired drivers and remove dangerous drivers from our roads. You will be arrested and you will lose the right to drive in our community for 90 days.

“Plan ahead, have a designated driver, catch a taxi or Uber or use public transport to get home, and keep our roads safe.”

Man charged with fraud offences after counterfeit currency seized

A 37-year-old man has been charged with fraud and weapon possession offences after allegedly using counterfeit currency at businesses in Canberra.

Police allege the man used counterfeit Australian banknotes to purchase food at fast food outlets in Phillip and Griffith.

The incidents were reported to police, and about 7:30am yesterday, officers executed a search warrant at the man’s Narrabundah home.

Police seized counterfeit notes, approximately 70 grams of cocaine, a gel blaster, tasers, and other prohibited weapons.

He was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, possessing a prohibited firearm and prohibited weapons.

He is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Saturday, 26 July 2025).
