New community centre on its way for Brabham

Source: Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions

The new suburb of Brabham is coming to life today as construction begins on the Brabham District Community Centre.

The Albanese Government’s contribution of $3.8 million was delivered through the Thriving Suburbs Program ensuring the Community Centre will benefit the neighbourhood for decades to come.

The centre is designed to host local events and house operations for grassroots or not-for-profit organisations. The community will benefit from facilities including function halls, meeting rooms, kitchens, storage and an outdoor events space.

The Thriving Suburbs Program is delivering over $317 million in federal funding to local governments and not-for-profit organisations for projects that enhance liveability, build ties across the community and improve services in Australia’s suburbs.

In Western Australia alone, 13 projects are being funded under the program, committing a total of $79 million to local community priorities.

For more information about the Thriving Suburbs Program, visit: www.infrastructure.gov.au/territories-regions/cities/thriving-suburbs-program.

Quotes attributable to Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“Through the Thriving Suburbs Program we’ve funded nearly $80 million in 13 crucial, community focussed projects across Western Australia’s suburbs.

“Outer suburbs are crucial local communities– where families flock to settle down and raise children in a vibrant community.

“All of these projects, like this one here in Brabham, are ensuring facilities are fit for purpose for growing neighbourhoods and flourishing communities.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Hasluck Tania Lawrence:

“The Brabham District Community Centre will serve not only Brabham but the fast developing communities of Dayton, West Swan and Henley Brook.

This is a shared space for so many of our wonderful local groups. It is another great example of different levels of government coming together to serve the needs of our growing communities.”

All aboard as Armadale Line reopens with services extending to Byford

Source: Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions

Community celebrations have marked the highly anticipated reopening of the full Armadale Line today, which now extends eight kilometres to Byford, supporting one of Perth’s fastest growing residential areas.

The METRONET Byford Rail Extension project has delivered a brand-new train station in Byford, a new world class elevated station in Armadale and removed nine pedestrian and road level crossings providing a much-improved connection to our public transport system as the local population continues to grow.

Jointly funded by the Albanese and Cook Labor Governments, the project was a major construction feat with the delivery of eight kilometres of new dual rail track, including 22,000 sleepers 40,000 tonnes of crushed rock,430 masts and 72 km of overhead wiring. The project has also supported an estimated 4,200 jobs.

Two new road over rail bridges were also built at Thomas Road and Eleventh Road, while eight hectares of new public open space was created through the elevation of the rail line. This open space is also complemented by eight kilometres of new shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists.

The new Byford Station also includes a new platform servicing the Australind train. The new train is currently undergoing dynamic testing and will return to service in early 2026.

The opening of the Byford Rail Extension marks the completion of all new METRONET rail lines WA Labor committed to at the 2017 State Election, with the final METRONET project, the New Midland Station, expected to open in early 2026.

Local residents using the new Byford Station will reach the CBD in 46-minutes, while fares will be capped to just a single zone from January 1 when the single zone flat fare comes into effect.

During the Armadale Line closure, the Public Transport Authority also delivered the Rail Revitalisation Program, undertaking major maintenance and upgrades between Kenwick and Sherwood stations. The work includes the renewal of 15 kilometres of track, 25 pedestrian crossings,10 level crossings and improved drainage systems.

Today’s community event also celebrated the official opening of Long Park, Perth’s newest and longest linear park between Carlisle and Beckenham stations.

Stretching seven kilometres, the six-hectare Long Park features 14 community spaces, including playgrounds, skate parks, dog and fitness parks and youth plazas with sports courts. New shared paths have also been built throughout the parkland area.

The elevation of the rail as part of the METRONET Victoria Park – Canning Level Crossing Removal Project created the opportunity for this development, which was shaped through meaningful input from the local community.

These transformative projects have delivered a remarkable 14 hectares of public parklands and open space – an area equivalent to seven Optus Stadiums.

Long Park is home to Perth’s longest public art trail, with more than 20 different pieces of public art installed along the length of the park.

Bus services have been expanded to support the Byford Rail Extension including 10 extra buses and six new routes connecting directly to Byford Station, adding nearly 500,000 kilometres of bus service to the network each year.

More information on train and bus services and timetables can be found on the Transperth website.

Quotes attributable to WA Premier Roger Cook:

“METRONET has transformed the face of Perth by making travel more affordable, taking cars off our roads and creating thousands of jobs over the past eight years.

“We know how important our expanded public transport network will be in the coming years with Western Australia’s booming economy and growing population, which is why my government is proud to have delivered the METRONET Byford Rail Extension and reopened the Armadale Line.

“We know METRONET is giving people in Perth’s south-eastern suburbs more travel choices and addressing road congestion.

“Along the Armadale Line, METRONET’s development has also allowed us to open Long Park, which will provide Western Australians with more opportunities to get outside, be active and engage with their local community.

“Today is a huge milestone that demonstrates my government’s commitment to making public transport more affordable and accessible for Western Australians.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“The Albanese and Cook Labor Governments are working in partnership to deliver for Perth’s growing south with these two new train stations now open at Armadale and Byford.

“The reopening of the Armadale line and its much-anticipated extension will provide safer and more efficient public transport connections for the Perth community.

“Significant works have been carried out with the removal of level crossings and installation of a new dual rail track to future-proof the Armadale line, allowing for faster and more reliable train journeys.

“I am excited to see Western Australians and visitors enjoy the benefits of these transformative METRONET projects for generations to come.”

Quotes attributable to WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“This is an incredibly exciting moment for communities in the south east of Perth.

“Byford is one of the fastest growing areas in our city and now they will have access to a world class train line for the first time.

“The upgrades to the Armadale Line have been transformational – linking more people to public transport, better connecting communities and unlocking around 14 hectares of new public open space, which will see the delivery of new parklands, playgrounds and amenities.

“This project is about supporting current and future generations, unlocking new opportunities for development and making more of Perth accessible by public transport.

“Can I thank the communities living along the Armadale Line for their patience while we have delivered this project.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Burt Matt Keogh:

“This is such an exciting day for our whole community – from Kenwick down to Byford. With new rail down the whole line, two new stations, and the removal of frustrating level crossings, our community has been tracking this one closely.

“Across Burt, this will better connect people to the places they work, live, and learn – like the Armadale University Study Hub, opening soon on Jull Street.”

Quotes attributable to State Member for Armadale Tony Buti:

“There is no question this project has completely transformed the Armadale town centre, and I know how important this investment into public infrastructure is for our community.

“This new station, the public open space we’ve created by elevating the line and the removal of level crossings will make our community a better and safer place for people to work, commute and recreate for many decades to come.”

Quotes attributable to State Member for Darling Range Hugh Jones:

“Our community has been anticipating this day for years and there is a great deal of excitement as we celebrate the opening of the new Byford Station.

“Byford is now only a train ride away from new job and study opportunities; events and outings in the CBD and Optus Stadium; and access to reliable and affordable public transport right on our doorstep.

“It means getting where we need to go faster, easier and cheaper and I’m proud our government got on with the job of delivering this important project, and to celebrate it with our community.”

Major milestone as Majors Road Interchange opens to traffic

Source: Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions

The $120 million Majors Road Interchange upgrade is complete, delivering shorter and safer journeys through Adelaide’s southern suburbs for travellers and locals.

The newly widened Majors Road bridge has today opened to traffic for the first time, improving travel on an important arterial road for connections between Lonsdale Road and Main South Road.

About 13,200 vehicles travel daily on Majors Road – anticipated to increase to around 14,700 during peak times by 2036.

The new on/off-ramps for the Southern Expressway at the Majors Road junctions are also now open to road users, helping create a seamless journey for commuters in the southern suburbs.

The Southern Expressway serves as the gateway to the Fleurieu Peninsula, carrying approximately 74,000 vehicles per day, and supporting economic activity and tourism in the region, including Kangaroo Island.

The project was jointly funded by the Albanese and Malinauskas Labor governments, with both contributing $60 million.

Major works on the project began in March 2024 and across its duration, 245 South Australian jobs have been supported, including 12 per cent of the cohort Indigenous employees, 10 per cent apprentices and trainees, and four per cent individuals facing barriers to employment or who were long-term unemployed.

The completed project will also see 1.8 kilometres of new shared-use paths to connect two major cycling routes, increasing access to important community facilities, including Glenthorne National Park–Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, Glenthorne Farm and O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park.

Approximately 42,000 new plants have been introduced throughout the project, including more than 200 mature trees.

While the new ramps are open to the public from tomorrow, speed limits on the on/off-ramps will remain reduced for a few weeks to allow the road surface to develop traction for safe driving at higher speeds.

Quotes attributable to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

“The upgrade to Majors Road Interchange means safer and faster journeys for the growing communities of Adelaide’s south, and for people visiting the Fleurieu Peninsula.

“This project has provided a boost to the local economy and will deliver real benefits to local communities. It’s a huge win for locals who rely on these roads every day and tourists who want to come visit this beautiful part of South Australia.”

Quotes attributable to SA Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Emily Bourke:

“The state government is investing billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure projects across South Australia that will benefit the community for years to come.

“We’re making travel easier, faster and, most importantly, safer, and that’s a great contribution to the state.

“It’s great to see the Majors Road Interchange, an election commitment by the Malinauskas Government, open to road users ahead of schedule.

“The newly widened Majors Road bridge will improve travel for connections between Lonsdale and Main South Road, while the new on/off-ramps will connect people to the non-stop South Road we are building.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Kingston Amanda Rishworth:

“Today is a major milestone for residents living in Adelaide’s Southern Suburbs. For years I’ve been fighting alongside my community to have access to the Southern expressway to get where they need to go faster and saving time commuting.

“This opening delivers on the Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments’ election commitments. Not only is this opening good for locals today and will also ensure that our community can access the new north-south corridor upgrades in the future.”

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Boothby Louise Miller-Frost:

“This project supported South Australian jobs during construction and will continue to deliver economic benefits by improving and streamlining access to key employment hubs and unlocking future growth across my electorate of Boothby. In particular this will ease commuter traffic on Brighton Rd and all of Adelaide’s southern suburbs.

“With the Australian Government a funding partner in this project, the new interchange will make travel smoother, safer and faster – and that means more time for home, work and community.”

Boggo Road Precinct to be transformed with $4.95 million Australian Government investment

Source: Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions

The heritage-listed Boggo Road Gaol will be transformed, with the Albanese Labor Government today announcing a $4.95 million investment in the Boggo Road Innovation Precinct under the urban Precincts and Partnerships Program.

The gaol served as Brisbane’s main prison for 119 years before it closed in stages between 1989 and 2000. While it’s been a popular destination for ghost and crime tours, the prison has been underutilised for a quarter of a century.

The adaptive-reuse of the Gaol will see the building’s heritage doors open once more, this time as the home of biomedical, environmental, agricultural and technological sciences at the centre of the new Queensland Boggo Road Innovation Precinct.

Today’s funding announcement marks the initial phase of development and will include upgrades to the Gaol and a precinct-wide public realm strategy, informed by the area’s first nations’ narratives.

It will also fund the development of walking and cycling connections to the new Boggo Road Underground station that will open as part of Cross River Rail, Dutton Park railway station, and the new Yamma Bridge.

The Boggo Road project will be delivered by the Queensland Government.

The Boggo Road transformation is the second Queensland project this year to be funded under the Albanese Labor Government’s urban Precincts and Partnerships Program (uPPP), after the Ipswich Central Heart project received $3.8 million in funding in January.

The uPPP grants fund planning and investment in our cities and suburbs, based on the principles of unifying urban places, growing economies and serving communities.

This program supports the delivery of best-practice investment in urban infrastructure, connecting people and communities to services and opportunities that improve liveability, equity and productivity.

More information on these programs is available at www.infrastructure.gov.au/territories-regions-cities/cities

Quotes attributable to Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King:

“The Albanese Government’s investment will ensure the Boggo Road precinct is one of the best places in Queensland to conduct world-leading site for science and innovation.

“This part of Brisbane is growing rapidly, with brilliant new transport connections coming online over the new few years. I’m excited to see new life breathed into these historic walls and for Boggo Road Gaol to be central part of this exciting new precinct.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Griffith, Renee Coffey:

“For a quarter of a century, the doors of Boggo Road prison have been closed to Brisbane, now we’re transforming the building into a state-of-the-art science, technology and innovation precinct.

“With Dutton Park station just down the road, and Boggo Road underground station opening its doors in the coming years, our investment will make it easier to walk from the platforms to the prison as we develop a thorough plan for the precinct and new walking and cycling paths.”
